I would be happy with a screw lid can.
Metal costs more than plastic. The SG tins were steel, very strong but they rust and never sealed well. You can imagine how much less the plastic containers will cost than real steel tins, and for SG they are an improvement since plastic doesn’t rust and spoil the snuff. I suppose the one good thing about plastic “tins” is they don’t ring metal detectors at airports! Wilsons seem very traditional. I hope they’ll carry on with their metal tins which don’t rust, they seal well enough and I like them quite a lot. They’re tops for home use.
As far as tins go, the Toque ones seem the best of a bad bunch. I agree that the WoS are pretty hopeless.
The Toque tins are perfect. They seal tight, keeping the product fresh, and don’t spill when opened. I think that even if Wilson’s didn’t switch over to screw lids, then maybe they could make the top flat, which would keep the snuff level and would prevent a heap from building on one side.
I like the little plastic Dholakia tubs. Their lids stay on well, their size is a nice small, they look flash with the label.
I like the tubs too, but I fear of the thin plastic cracking and snuff spilling out.
The 50g Dholakia tubs that Mr Snuff is carrying are superb - too big to carry around but re-useable and keep the snuff in perfect condition; heavy duty plastic with a screw lid.
Yes Nigel, wish I could lay my hands on some more of those tubs. Small enough to fit into my plastic containers for the freezer but big enough to keep a good portion. Problem with the Wilson’s tin is the top of the lid is higher than the rim of the tin. The Toque tin’s lid fits flush on the tin. If one could stick a thick enough gasket in the lid, it would solve the problem.
Learn to spin 'em like the pros do, cstokes!
I’ve tried it. It’s hit and miss with me. I’ve had issues with the snuff getting jammed in between the lips of the lid and bottom. I have to pry the lid off and then the snuff goes everywhere.
Then it’s time you had a drink with Snuff Head and ermtony. They will show you how it’s done!
LOL, you are probably right. Boy would that be a treat.
Yeah, it’s a shame we can’t all sit down together. Too spread out across the world…
You guys are always welcome!
Thanks, Tony. Would truly love to!
Welcome back to the City ermtony :-} @ cstokes4, If the tin jams with snuff then turn the tin in your hands while gently squeezing the sides of the lid with thumbs and forefingers. You will be amazed how easy it will then open.
I’ll give that a try later, Snuff Head. My Irish Toast is the worst of them all. Of course that might have something to do with me always getting into it.
Toque tins = perfect. They’re even aluminum, so no rust. Plus, easy to recycle unlike plastic. Yes, I do all the tricks to keep Wilson’s in the tin too. The thing is, I shouldn’t have to. I agree with the above, though, if we complain too much they’ll change to a Gawith tin. That’s a step in the *wrong* direction.
I know Roderick and Namrata watch and post here, do any other Snuff makers post here?
I’ve decided I like the Samuel Gawith dispensers. They seem to keep the snuff very fresh, they fit in the pocket well, they don’t spill when you open them, and if you don’t like taking the snuff from the back of the hand, the snuff can be decanted into a snuff box, tin or bullet. I prefer them to the Wilsons 5 and 10g tins anyway - I wouldn’t dream of taking a fullish one out with me after embarressingly dropping one on the floor at a beer festival last night whilst trying to wrestle the lid off!
