I had a sniff of toque cherry, when I cleared out my nose I found that I cannot smell anything at all. I put vick’s vapor rub under my nose but I can’t even smell that! Does this happen every once in a while or should I be worried and go see my doctor on monday? I am afraid that I burnt my nose receptors to the point of no return. HELP, Kyle
If you can’t smell it, don’t snuff it. You probably got a cold coming on, but don’t worry no one died from one.
It will pass, don’t worry. Some snuffs just don’t suit everyone and a couple of them do this to me as well.
I was gonna say that Toque Cherry’s flavor was very fleeting, and that’s why you didn’t smell it… but don’t worry, I’m pretty damn sure that snuff won’t kill your sense of smell.
woah… I had wondered as a passing thought before if snuff could cause us to burn out our sense of smell but eating food doesn’t kill our sense of taste… even people who go nuts on all kinds of peppers etc I believe can still taste other things (somebody who goes nuts on all kinds of peppers would have to speak up to confirm or deny this though since that’s sure not me) IS it possible that both the cherry snuff and the Vicks vapor rub both went weak? (it could happen), are they both old, been left open or in the wrong temperature? Have you tried a neti pot or similar? I agree with the others that more than likely your sense of smell will come back. I also think some of it might be the same as when you first smell an awful smell and ‘they’ actualy tell you that in order to get over it you should actually breathe deeply, get all the bad smell you can and thus sort of ‘use it up’ and you get where you can’t smell it any more, at least for that duration of time you’re around it (I hope you know what I’m talking about) but then later if you leave the area of a bad smell and come back, you’ll smell it again. you may have just temporarily accidentally done something along those same lines, but with the snuff (and the vick’s… especially if any other snuffs you use on a regular basis are mentholated). I don’t know if ‘just don’t sniff a while’ is a realistic answer (people have to get their nicotine, and some people use only snuff) if you have any known what I call “dirt snuff” (what smells like nothing at all really, has less smell than actual dirt would even have), something that you know has no smell to you even when all is operating as expected, maybe go to that for a little while.
Ok, I took a nap after using the neti pot and when I woke up I could smell again. I took a whiff of the cherry snuff and it smelled normal, along with everything else. I think my nose must have dried out because of the weather because it happened after I went outside. This never happened to me before so I was a little scared. I appreciate the help you all gave me and now I know it will happen from time to time. Sorry for the trouble I caused you all. ~Kyle
@watadork hey! I for one, was really helped out by this Like I said, I had some secret concerns/thoughts of my own and just because it hasn’t happened to me (yet!) doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have freaked out Its gonna happen to me sooner or later too and probably others too who wouldn’t otherwise know what was going on and we’ll have seen this conversation and will know from it what’s goingon not to be scared and what to do. this was very good to see and have in here
I can think of some things that you would have been able to smell no matter how stuffed up or dried out you were.
I have a friend who has lost (or at least seariously screwd up) his sense of smell He can’t smell gasoline at all (seriously!), or poop (lucky him!) or a bunch of other really foul (and generally people-generated) smells, he also can’t smell a lot of really strrong mechanical related smells Can’t smell most perfumes, etc either but he’ll occasionally swear up and down he can smell a woman’s rouge, the very makeup on her face, and that this is overpowering to him I’d be curious what smells LincolnSnuff is thinking of (and if my buddy could smell them)
Skunk musk, Vietnamese fish sauce, durian fruit, etc… If you’ve never smelled durian - check out Wikipedia - Durian Fruit
I heard there is a recall on Zicam due to damage that it can cause to the olfactory glands.
I realized that ever since I started using my neti pot that my nose was less sensitive to scents. It happened again this evening when after I cleaned out my nose with the neti pot and put fresh lavender snuff in. I think my nose is sensitive to the salt water solution or something. I will not be using my neti pot at all tomorrow just to see how my nose fares. I will post again tomorrow night with my findings.
The nose needs to recover after netti use.
One thing that can desensitize the nose temporarily is the use of German snuffs (schmalzers). The paraffin oil,or lard if it is old enough snuff coats the works.
Well I didn’t use my Neti Pot at all today and my nose got back to where it was (I can smell even the lightest snuff). I will use the neti pot on a need be basis from now on.
Had to bump this old topic because I’m experiencing the same thing. My nose was stuffed up and draining past few days but I still snuffed and could smell it… Some O&G was great… Now my nose is clear and I can’t smell anything… Snuff, soap, my cologne, even tried a vicks inhaler nothing. I know this is hopefully unrelated but I was in a car accident yesterday my wife and I are fine just bruised up, the air bags deployed… Very foul odor. I had the congestion though before the accident. Before the cops showed up a passerby gave me a marlboro red, I haven’t smoked in months. Funny how I noticed I lost my smell. I was taking a pinch of F&T HDT and couldn’t smell it at all. It freaked me out I thought I didn’t close it right but that’s hard to do. I’m a bit scared now should I buy a netti pot?
talk to a doctor. Probably no big deal and you’re probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. Seriously though talk to a doctor. Slim chance you have an injury you aren’t aware of.
Shock and stress can temporarily damage certain senses. I had a buddy who fought in Iraq that experienced temporary blindness after witnessing a tragic event. Nothing would hurt from going to the doctor, and I’m sure it will clear up after you have a talk with him or her.
Eric - I read about your accident on Snuson and am glad to hear that you and your wife are ok and your son was not in the car. I would mention the issue to your doc when you go in for the MRI if it still persists. I bet it is cold-related or perhaps minor shock after the accident and will subside shortly. Take care!
Thanks for the advice guys and Lincoln I appreciate the kind words, it means alot. Good news guys what I did was use some saline solution I layed down and applied a few drops in each nostril for a few minutes… Hour or two later smells came back… I hit the HDT and McC’s mild lemon and breathed a sigh of relief. Off topic I’m still a bit jumpy after the ordeal. I’m so glad I have snuff… It’s calming and relaxing alot more so than cigarettes ever were.
