How to use a snuff spoon ?

I tried  to take snuff using my pipe tool spoon but it always hits my throat… so what is the right way to take snuff using a spoon, the right spoon to use, the right amount of snuff on the spoon, the angle of the spoon when sniffing, how far or close to the nostril must the spoon be ? Is it better to use spoon with very high dry grinds than using the pinch method ? I wait an order from Mrsnuff including a silver snuff spoon, I hope it works better! Thanks guys for the advice!

@kougy I covered this a little bit in my previous post about anatomy. I use a small spoon and place it right inside mny nostril, I angle the bowl so it is “pointing” at the middle or inner side of my nose, the side that runs down the middle. With such a small bowl and so much more nostril open I can avoid a tight seal like you experience with bullets. The snuff usually hits the side of my nose on it’s way up and the majority of it never gets to my throat. If you block both nostrils and draw hard ( inhale) you can still get nasty throat hits. I also used to twist my nose with my muscles in my face to slightly block the passage way. The best way I can describe this is, imagine your are snuffing with the right nostril. Try and make the upper right lip touch the lower left lip. this should twist your face a little and at the same time block off your nostril passage. Do this more extremely and you will see what I mean. This is just a way to get the feel for it better. Doing this in public might look silly…anyway I have a small spoon ( check the link in my anatomy post ) and usually do 2 big doses in each nostril once or twice per hour. Hope that helps.

@thorgrimnr Thanks a lot for the extended explanation… I am trying now to angle the spoon to face the middle of the inner side of my nostril and sniff very lightly but I think I will need a snuff spoon with a bowl, the pipe tool spoon has no bowl so the fine grind snuff fall when I tilt the spoon…

@kougy yes a bowl will be helpful as your learn, but once you have your aha! moment you will be able to use anything that will hold a nice small pile.  This method works with fine and dry snuffs too but will need an adjustment on air intake speed. I used to get bad throat hits if I placed my pinch in the center of my nostril so tucking your pinch to the inside side seems to reduce that a lot.

The big advantage of a spoon is it’s neat and tidy and is perfect for F&T Tall tubes of snuff.

The easiest snuff for me to take is German snuffs,I can load a pile of that on my the back of my hand and really snuff hard and no problems. Keep practicing, find what works for you. I’ve been snuffing for 2 years and only in the past 5 months have I found my technique which works 90% of the time. I am free to snuff as much as Iike and have no discomfort.

@thorgrimnr You know I feel now different than before… snuff society is different and unique… but cigarette smokers are everywhere so having this hobby is so special  I practice everyday with non stop and I am sure at the end everyone achieve a successful personal technique, wish you happy and enjoyable snuffing

Yes there’s a lot of good times and enjoyment with snuff. I am an ex smoker myself. If you ever want more help or opinions also feel free to email me anytime.  I like to help snuff friends.

@thorgrimnr Thank you very much for your nice offer and I will remember that… happy to be a new member in this society

Lol can we sing kumbaya and hold hands now? Just kidding. Hope that isn’t too crass.

From my expierence all of the smaller spoons send the snuff to the throat, you should consider buying that 7 dollar stainless steel snuff spoon, it has a very large bowl? on it and the larger amount makes it easier to take; it wont hit your throat and it wont irritate your nose as bad so you are less likely to sneeze as well. Ask most of the other members here, most will say that taking bigger pinches can make a big difference in snuffing

@Vito445 You are right, a nice member told me the same information about the larger doses and it’s logic if you think about it, few cars on the road go faster than a crowd in the rush hour  Thanks for the advice and as I said this is really a nice society

Snuff spoons seem way too small for me and the spoons in those Chinese snuff bottles are tooth picks. Maybe I’m a snuff pig, perhaps it’s because I’m an American, where bigger is always better.

The answer to your question is experiement. It’s going to be diffrent for everyone. The advice of a viking doesn’t work for me with spoons. For me what’s best is to hold the spoon flat with my nose holes at a short distance. And slowly inhale while slowly increaseing the speed of the inhale untill I smell the snuff then keep that pace. I use a salt spoon filled a little over half capacity. Do that once dump the snuff repeat untill saited. If very fine snuffs I put it with just a slight few milimeters away from my nose and inhale as lightily as is possible for a second or two. Take a breath and repeat a few times.

Second technique. I put a tiny amount on the spoon hold it right below the nose hole and inhale sharply for less then a second almost jumping the snuff in and repeat a few times. This is the easier of the two methods but takes a bit of time to do as you have to do a few bumps. This is also the tech I use for when walking and snuffing.

@tboyer Well I think not all bigger things are better, enjoy snuffing  @bob Thanks a lot for this explanation, enjoy snuffing

Finding the right size for the spoon is a big thing. If you have too little it flies up the nose into the sinuses, if the pile is too big you have to use more suction which causes it to go right up the sinuses. From what I’ve been lead to believe the spoons on the snuff bottles were intended for dryer snuffs since supposedily at that time china was more humid then europe (not sure if that’s true, just what I’ve heard) so the snuffs had to be finer and dryer to avoid the dreaded mold and over clumping. The size of the snuff bottle spoons backs up this theory.

I only use a snuff spoon for removing the snuff for the container (tap boxes excluded), I never snuff directly from the spoon, then I dump it into my ready “boxcar” :-)…

every snuffer should have a spoon even if they don’t snuff off of it. They’re perfect for moving snuff from one place to the other. For example there are a few freyborg and treyer snuffs I like to pinch but my chubby fingers don’t fit in the tube, so spoon it onto my hand and pinch from there. Not only can I get at the snuff it’s the perfect pinch as well easy to get the amount I want as well pinching the snuff just right.

@tboyer I’ve yet to see anything marketed as a “snuff spoon” actually be a snuff spoon. Some of the vendors out there sell things either ridiculously large or ridiculously small. Nonetheless, as @bob says, they can make valuable tools in varying sizes even if not used directly. In the picture, left to right: 1) a salt spoon, 2) another probable salt spoon which I find useful for a nostril of schmalzler or transfering snuffs from ome container to another, 3) what is likely a cocaine spoon (but sold as a “snuff spoon”) and the bowl end is usually useless, but the chopper end makes a good mixing tool or to break up clumps, 4) my favorite which is silver and I looked high and low on ebay for ages to find. I think this one actually is a snuff spoon, and makes a good one nostril bump and can reach into an F&T tube well. 5) a spoon charm, which I have a pile of but I’ve not much use for.

this one will give you a better idea of the scale

I mostly use a spoon for schmalzler & table top snuff boxes. then shove that stainless steel one right up to the nostril, I never close off the other hole.keep it there for 2 seconds to catch the crumbs. for lighter snuff I use box car method now that I use the slide door on the new snuffhouse.org boxes. before that I took big pinches. It all come down to personal preference. With practice you can use the finest of snuffs put the word blow hole in the search box.

Thank you all guys for the valuable information and sharing your experience, enjoy snuffing
