How to tell when snuff is spoiling

H

I’ve noticed if I sniff most of a 25g tin then set it aside for a couple months and come back to it for the dregs it has often developed a smell like bad feet or some sort of unusual cheese. It’s happened to Gekachelter Virginie, F&T Bordeaux and SG Blue Crest so far. Is this the first stage of spoiling/molding? But then again Gawith Hoggarth Kendal brown had that exact same spoiled scent right from the get-go and I thought it was a superb snuff. But the Gawith Hoggarth didn’t smell spoiled in the nose, these snuffs definitely do smell cheesy both in the tin and in the nose. Next order I will be decanting from 25g vac-tins into 10g WoS tins to use as snuff-boxes (I can commit to using up 10g of a snuff within a few days, but most 25g tins can’t keep me interested enough to devote myself to them for the full time it’d take to finish the whole thing). I figure at any one time I’ll have one menthol I’m taking, one floral, one dessert, one plain/SP/toast, and then whites for work. Hopefully avoid the problem of having tons of dregs in various stages of drying-out.

i wonder, are you storing them with other snuffs in very close proximity? maybe that has an effect.

H

Nope just stored in the open air; also my friend who is a regular snuff-taker had the same thing happen to his bag of Gekachelter Virginie. I suspect it’s oils on the fingers turning rancid in susceptible, perhaps low-salt snuffs.

Do you have a lot of humidity where you live @horus92‌ ?

H

Yeah though this happened with snuffs I ordered in fall so it’s been cold and dry while I’ve had them.

B

You’ll probably just have to be really pucker as to how you store your opened snuffs from now on. Sounds like a mild mold (not visable to the eye) to me but without lab testing its only guess work. I’d ditch the cheesey old stuff if it were me.

Dark and humid conditions are ripe for breeding molds and likely other nasty business. I can only imagine that is what is possibly happening here. As is my rule of thumb with foods: when in doubt- toss it out. While I have yet to have any remnants laying about as I tend to just mix in what’s left in my daily carry into tomorrows container, living in an area with high humidity I must remain extra vigilant and if I detected anything off about my snuff I would likely dispose of it.
