How to take german snuffs?

Hello ! I am having troubles with german snuffs, with Poschl Schmalzler Sudfrucht in particular. I use other types with lesser difficulties , but that Poschl and Bernard’s Droppet-Fermentert always are extremely clogging of the nostrils, and have to blow my nose immediately. Anyone else having problems ? If not, do you have tips on taking them ? Thanks !

When I use a tap box I tap some out onto my hand, then I smash it with the box so that there arent large clumps.  I use mostly schmalzers and I don’t get a clogged nose.

@Gax1985 Do you mean it clogs your nose because the snuff is damp or do you mean the snuff causes your sinuses to run profusely?

Clogs me too but can’t leave the stuff alone

Its really damp , I suspect it clumps in my nose and clogs it !

Well I have a little spoon and a usually load it up until it’s heaped with Sudfrucht, I inhale very quickly and with some force. I load up both nostrils with 2 spoons each, tilt my head back a bit ( after I’ve snuffled it all up ) and pinch my nose.  95% of it will stay in place, some just simply falls out. I always feel like I am eating cake with my nose when I have this stuff but it is entirely too delicious not to have tons of it.  Great now I’ll have to wait all day to get back home and have a slice…mmmmmm Sudfrucht

Put two large piles on the back of your hand and snuff one with each nostril leaving the hand under the nose to catch the crumbs. Then hoover up the crumbs. Next, resist the urge to blow. When it is about to drip, blow it out. The two secrets are: Use a lot and let the natural secretions of the nose soak it down well before blowing. If you use too little or blow too soon the schmalzler is still granular and it will plug you up.

I find the best way to take german snuff is to wait untill the clerk is looking the other way and casualy put a tin or bag in your pocket. Though if you do that you suck so don’t do that.

I use the boxcar method (on the thumbnail.) If there are any clumps, you just mash them out with a fingernail, the top of a ballpoint pen or some other appropriate masher readily at hand. Personally, I liketo use the corner of my snuffbox or the screwdriver/bottle opener on my swiss army knife. I usually don’t get many clumps because I give my snuffbox a vigorous shake before I open it.

@howdydave same here.  boxcar method works well for me.  I have a Bernard bottle full of klostermischung (Well not so full anymore!) and I get a bunch of it up my nose and pinch my nose for a couple seconds.  It makes my nose runny every time.  ALWAYS have a handkerchief handy.  I learned that the hard way… long story short… nose poo on a paper towel.

Hahahahaha @bob

Anyway, I frequently use all the Poschl Schmalzlers, I always use my stainless steel snuff spoon with them, similar to @thorgrimnr 's method

I use the boxcar method for must snuffs, I find it the least messy, if it a really fine and dry snuff I’ll pinch for a more controlled ingestion.

@SnuffSniffer Would you please tell me what is “the boxcar method” ?

make a fist tuck your thumb against the pointer finger so it makes a little ditch that you can snuff from. Does that makes sense?

@bob yes indeed  Thanks a lot… I tried it already but I did not know that “boxcar” is the name

I don’t know either, I guess it’s because it forms a little box?

@SnuffSniffer I understand now that it means the boxing fist shape and when I tried it before it was very difficult to control the amount of snuff I take specially if it is a fine grind… in fact I tried all the methods I read about everywhere and I realized that the really best way to take snuff and be totally in control is the “Pinch” method !
I also found this definition for Boxcar:

|

| An enclosed railroad freight car, typically with sliding doors on the sides. |

I think @howdydave explained well the technique in an old post that I paste below:

I use either an empty President tap box or a wooden snuffbox with the
lid only opened a cm or two.

Hold the wooden snuffbox so that it is resting on the index finger
wrapped around the end of your thumb with the open slot is vertically
aligned with your thumbnail and tap the box.

With practice you will not need to stabelize it on your finger.

The width of the slot may vary with the consistancy of your snuff. The
objective is to make it narrow enough so that, when you tap your box,
snuff comes out at a controllable rate.

And works for me with schmalzlers, if I make a pile in the back of my hand some of it falls everytime :frowning:

I think howdydave actually made up the term “boxcar method” I never heard it before he arrived. Before that we jokingly refferred to it as the Tom Thumb method, since Tom (bakdoor) posted a pic of it once.
