I’m doing fine with snuffing fine snuffs like Toque etc. (No F&T HDT has hit my throat yet! I’m proud of myself But when I try to snuff moist and coarse snuffs, like my other F&Ts (Princes, Santo Domingo and Old Paris), the experience is most unpleasant. The snuff is constantly sticking to my fingers, so I have to sniff harder and it eventually ends up either in my throat or far enough to cause the drip to be really unpleasant or very close to the nosdrils, so my nose gets dirty. Also a lot of it ends up outside. Right now I got back to the snorter, which I have no problem with. But if anyone suggests how can I improve my technique - thanks a lot!
spoon
yeah, a spoon would be the way to go
Thanks for the advice, I will try the spoon tommorow.
How I take moist / course snuffs… Take a pinch as normal, bring it to one nostril and sniff. Hold your fingers there, blocking the nostril, and breath out of your mouth, breath in again through the nose and move your fingers away. Repeat for the other nostril. I think the key is breathing out of your mouth rather than your nose for a little bit, so as not to blow the snuff out. I hope that’s of some help.
Use a spoon.
While I am a snuff newbie myself, I find that for really moist, coarse snuffs (like WOS Brunswick) I can’t sniff them, so I put them physically into my nose. I take a pinch, arrange it on my index finger, then push that up my nose (gently) and spread it around. I repeat with the other nostril, and if I think that wasn’t enough, I just repeat. I am sure some people think it is gross to stick your finger up your nose, but it brings back fond memories of my childhood… Geraldo
Geraldo, that’s the way to go!!
I have the opposite problem – I tend to oversniff the fine, dry snuffs if I’m not careful, and they end up in my throat. Pain is a strict teacher, but a thorough one. Moist snuffs I have no problem with. I agree with those who suggested a spoon. It seems to help in directing the snuff to the front of the nostril.
Geraldo’s proposed method is the only way I can take the coarser African snuffs like NTSU Black, no matter how hard I sniff them it all just falls out my nose, physically packing it in there is the only way.
You should learn to control snuff taking by using the diaphragm rather than the lungs, in the same way a professional singer controls air and resonance. Once you have acquired the knack any snuff from fin to gros is easy to take in large pinches without any drama whatsoever. If any snuff hits the back of your throat or your sinuses (ouch) then you haven’t yet learned the correct technique. The abdominal area should remain expanded after inhalation of air. You can then feel the diaphragm muscle suddenly jump lower with a short, sharp ‘sniff’. Many snuffers do this instinctively; others learn by practise along the thorny path.
Thanks, that’s a very helpful tip. Having had a little training in voice long ago, I know exactly what you mean about using the diaphragm.
Well said Geraldo. I concur, but would also like to add “picking a winner” on occasion.
