I just bought medicated J&H wilson N99 snuff large tin for the first time, and i cant find a way to open it. On a tin there is written “to open use a coin and twist”, but a didnt found a way to do it. Can you please explain to me how to open this damn tin?
You put the coin in the groove and turn it. A UK 1p coin is perfect. To be fair it is a bit of a pig to open the first time. Failing the coin use brute strength.
There should be a niche aroud the tin just under the lid. I find a medium to large flat head screwdriver is better than a coin. Take the blade edge-on and pry it between the bottom lip of the niche and the bottom edge of the lid with a twisting motion. Turn the can a quarter turn and repeat. Three to four times should get the lid loose enough to lift off. You should hear a very satisfying sound of air being sucked it to the vacuum as the tin is opened. Edit: I never have actually opend a Medicated No. 99, but I have opened several similar tins this way.
That’s really helped! Thank you, Xander.
The hard part is then trying to close them
are these like the tins pipe tobaccoo comes in sometimes? took me about half an hour to figure out the first time i got one as the instructions were in german.
if you have a contain to decant into just smash something like a screw driver through the tin. Works for me.
Tin opener bob. It’s quicker Stefan
true never tried that on a snuff tin. The last time I had to break a tin to get the snuff the person didn’t have a tin opener in their house. (the person whos house I was at.)
I open them by making a tiny hole into the lid with a sharp needle, just enough to let the air in. Afterwards I reseal it with a drop of cyanoacrylate. The perfect place for the hole is in one of the strokes of the letters of the health warning, so you won’t see the hole at all. As you can see, there is no need for brute force with various tools. Afterwards it should be easy to open the tin, though, the last time I did it I managed to spill a third of the content on my shirt and the kitchen floor…
Yeah, I have two university degrees so no problemo opening tins with a 2€ coin or a key. Or maybe this is a generation issue, I’m old school.
AllanH, I also have two university degrees, in engineering. But for me the 2 EUR coin didn’t work.
These tins are actually very easy to open. Maybe itsuke, or someone that makes snuff review videos can make a demo? The lid pops right off after a few twists.
I’ve never had any issues with opening those tins. They pop open nicely by just twisting a coin between the lid and the tin.
Maybe there are variations from tin to tin or batch to batch? I’d say that there’s no way that my first tin of J&H could have been opened just with a coin in the rim. I tried for 10 minutes and after wiping off the sweat off my forehead, I developed the sophisticated way of opening the tin described above. Since then I’ve never tried using a coin again.
@ snufffranzl: read carefully the method I described above at post #3. The trick is in not trying to open it all in one spot. Work your way around. Don’t use the coin as a pry bar, use it as a fulcrum point making a moment against the lip/ridge and the tin lid. If I had a webcam I’d show how easy it is. Also I suppose it is possible you had a bent or rusted tin. I usually have my Swiss Army knife at hand, and the flathead screwdriver blade that is on most of them is pretty convenient for me. Now that Samuel Gawith is making these tins readily available again we’re probably going to get this question more frequently around here.
I used the flathead screwdriver method. One word of caution, open the tin over a plate or sheet of paper in case it spills.
It’s possible I’ve been smoking tinned pipe tobacco for ages I can usal open the tins easily. Though I didn’t get one tin that was a bitch to open. I have no idea why either. It only happened one time though.
You can use an opener designed to open beer bottles but then you have to decant the snuff. It wont seal again.
I use a Samurai Sword.
