How to commercially make Snuff. for export

Hi I would like to find out the process of making snuff on a commercial size. We grow a lot of tobacco here in Zimbabwe and would like to turn it into snuff and export it world wide. Please help

I can’t help with that. I do wish you all good luck.

Step 1. Grow, Cure, Grind, Sieve, Flavor, Package Tobacco Step 2. Send Samples to Snuffhouse Community Step 3. ??? Step 4. Profit!

thanks guys for the response, matt, we growing tobacco at the moment, 100 hectares of the stuff, i would like to know where i can get information on the commercial equipment for grinding, seiving, flavouring and packaging and tequniques used in making snuff. we want to do 100tonnes of the stuff. So all help would be good.

snuffgrinder- Thank you will chase those leads- we want a basic type of snuff-entry level firstly for the local african market-once we have got that up to a good level then look at the european market- sorry we are just commercial tobacco farmers at the moment.

Just sell your tobacco to Roderick.

Check out what the locals are snuffing. I gather the South african local snuff is NTSU and Taxi. I can buy it over the counter or online in the uk. It seems that wherevere there is a SA community, NTSU and Taxi are available. It is a strang snuff, very coarsley ground and damp with one hell of a nicoteen hit. To get further information, look on the NTSU threads by using the search facility on this site. I gather Roderick (Toque) started with some coffe grinders at home ? There is a very helpful SA guy on this forum called Pieter Classen. Hopefully he will see this thread. There are also other threads dealing with make or grow your own snuff. Sorry I cant be of more help

London Jack- Thansk so much for the info i will look at the NTSU stuff and see what its all about. You have been a great help,

London jack- i can believe that the local stuff for the african market is coarse and strong. Also SA like there home comforts, i lived in london for 7 years before all the masses came over and i must sa i did miss thehome comforts. Juxtaposer- we cant sell direct out of the country, all has to be sold to the buying floors.

Are there any successful brands locally? If you want to try selling in Zimbabwe before you look to the international market, I’d say find out what people around your area like in snuff, try and replicate that, and then put your own twist on it. Make it a little different to set it apart, but not too much so that people don’t know what to do with it.

I think Wilsons buys most of their tobacco from Zimbabwe growers. They grind it themselves of course. I’m sure they’d entertain an offer of selling cured leaf. I know little of such things, only they know what they want.

Shikitohno- There used to be one company, but it changed hands and i think they ran it into the ground, so thats why we have seen a gap in the Zim market, thats why i am asking for information on how to make it on a commercial scale not private. What sort of equipment etc i would need. Xander-We want to make it for the localmarket as there are no other people doing it in Zimbabwe. We are not going to sell it, we have buyers already, we want to value add to it. So please if anyone knows how i go about finding out how to turn it into Snuff on a huge commercial scale i would really appreciate it, coffee grinders is not big enough. Thank you very much

Still waiting for Roderick or the other official folks to pitch in, but there exists a market for [industrial spice grinders]. That would seem to fit the bill. But then again, maybe I live a little bit too much in accordance with the Mythbusters mantra, “Using common items in ways they were never meant to be used.” Off the top of the Google results, www.mill.com.tw. Also featuring industrial grade mixers. I’ll assume you’ve got the curing down already, as you haven’t supplied us with much details. Along with the growing, curing and grinding, all you really need is containers for the end product. This assuming much of the work will be done by hand. If modern, mostly automated production facilities are what you want, I’m thinking this forum is not going to help you much. Though there might be a few production line engineers and such lurking around, you never know. But then again, this is all just common sense and conjencture, so I’m sorry I can’t be of any real help. Best of luck with your endeavours, and hopefully we’ll have another delicious snuff in the days to come.

Mittens- Thanks so much i will hopefully get some feed back from the pffical folks tomorrow. Curing is taken care of, and containers are the only thing left, the guys who used to do here back in the day was in pouches if i can remember correctly. It will be done by hand to begin with but it would be great to get into full automotive production line so if there are any engineers here i would like you feed back. Mittens thank you again. And thanks to this forum for all the info.

I was wondering does anyone know what mesh size Snuff is usually ground down to? the NTSU an others???

Aside from speaking with Roderick of Toque, Jaap at Molens DeKralings could be of help to you, Also the Dholakia company in India may have some insights. I’m not sure how much they are willing to divulge but we do know them as fine fellows. (Jaap uses a 250mu and a 400mu for his two sizes)

Juxtaposer- Thanks so much for all that info Have you got email contact detials for them, i will email Roderick through the Toque website. But not sure how to contact the others i will try google. Thanks again, and i hope this can work so we can send all you guys some samples.

Something like this might work for packaging. They also say that they design custom labels so that might kill two birds with one stone: http://www.visipak.com/vials/threaded-top-vials-integral-cap-side-seals.html And this site looks like it has at least two or three good snuff containers: http://www.ballsteeltinusa.com/seamless.aspx And this is bound to have quite a few good container ideas: http://www.containerandpackaging.com/itemtype.asp Best of luck to you tsdoran. I can’t wait to see the final product someday!

Thanks very much. I bought the only 2 local Snuffs available here in Zimabawe 1. Bute-very fine ground, light brownish, dry and very strong 2. Mudhombo-course,dark brown, moist, mild I have never taken snuff before, and must say the bute blew my head of, but the Mudhombo was much better. Who is the most knowledgeable on Snuff in this forum, that would be able to advise on these products?
