At the moment I own 5 tins rounding off about 25g, I’m looking to purchase about 30g more. So my question is how quickly does snuff dry out and is there any remedies to stop it from happening?
Well, it depends on the kind of snuff and the condition (and container) in which its stored. I put my moist snuffs in sealed zip-lock bags (or tupper-ware) to preserve the moisture. My toasts and scotches, I don’t bother with because they’re already bone dry. If its supposed to be moist and you don’t plan on consuming it quickly, I’d say put the entire container into an air tight bag or jar etc. and only take it out when you plan on using it (or to refill your snuff box, bullet, etc). Also, its not always water content that makes a snuff moist, some use other things like ghee or parafin - waxy substances, which tend to hold the “moisture” longer and therefore do not require as drastic a measure as an air-tight container. Hope that answers your question. I’ve never attempted to “re-hydrate” a snuff, but I know there are many members here who have experience in that field, I’m sure there are other threads here that discuss re-hydrating.
Two simple ways to re-hydrate: put a small moist ball of tissue in the container and wait a few hours, works best with small amounts. Second, just add by hand a few drops of water and mix it up and allow to permeate. If you’ve made it too moist just leave the lid off a while as the excess dries. If the snuff was flavoured and has gone bone dry you may find the flavour has decreased or even gone; thats because as it dries out the moisture will tend to carry the aromatics with it. If its flavourless you can either use it as a base for blends or pep it up by re-flavouring with a drop of port or whisky, or whatever you like. You can spray larger amounts or use condensation methods but these are the two practical ways I use. keeping Tonquin beans (specialist shops or Mcgaheys) also helps with keeping snuff fresh and givers the snuff a touch of piquant flavour.
Awesome! Thank you, I’m new to the snuff world and have a lot of questions but I found most of them by reading previous posting.
I recently soaked some tonka beans overnight and then left them in my tim of dried out snuff. This rehydrated the snuff and gave it a wonderful vanilla scent. However rehydrated snuffs tend to dry out quicket than fresh snuff. So more than water is evaporating. Probably some essential oils.
