I started when i was 10 my grand dad lit me have a pinch while fishing and it was Levi Garrett been doing it ever since

B

I just started with snuff a couple months ago. I’ve tried every other form of tobacco but never snuff until recently. I’m 41 and my first was Royal George.

J

I had my first snuff a couple months ago at the age of 18. First one i had was Poschl Ozona President and it remains one of my favorites

S

43

D

36 / Molens Latakia

G

My early twenties; I can’t really remember, but it’s somewhere in that ballpark.

T

14 or 15 but, I tried to smoke it!!! ? See below.

T

last time I told it it was on snuson. If someone told me then I’d end up owning a snuff company…

When I was at school and around 14, we stole a masters tobacco tin. We smoked all his RYO and then tried rolling his snuff. I put it to my lips and a friend lit it. I sucked burning snuff straight down my throat. Suffice to say I never went near snuff for years.

I was eventually shown the proper way to take snuff and the rest is history. I couldn’t tell you what brand the first smoked/sucked one was but, I know the second was an F&T, don’t remember the flavour though.

S

I was in my early teens when I first tried snuff. It as a Garrett Sweet. I am pretty sure that first sniff went all the way to my toes.

That was enough for me until this year.

First sniff…13 years old or so. First enjoyment of snuff…this year…49 years old.

Z

In grad school. Peach scotch.

D

34.  Toque Natural.  Natural has been replaced by Quit in my rotation, but I am still a regular Toque customer.

T

I thought it was very recently, but a sniff of SP reminded me that as a kid (about 7) I found a tin of top mill, and had a good sniff. I’d completely forgotten about this until then.

S

First sniff would have been at age 19, using ground up Gambler cigarette tobacco. First “real” snuff was Garrett scotch.

D
  1. Saw Navy Sweet in the grocery store and it stuck out among the cans of chew and moist snuff.
F

Mine was when I was 18. Toque Chocolate, I think.

Snuffed on and off for a few years, forgot about it, then recently found my collection sitting in my closet.

Luckily it was in an airtight container, so while some of it is a bit dried out, most all of them still have their flavor!

V

I was 17 when I first tried snuff.

H

I was about 45 and my first was either W.E. Garrett Sweet or Railroad (both American snuffs.) I wouldn’t suggest starting off with American snuffs; they are dry and harsh compared to most other snuffs.  They may even contain carcinogenous chemicals that you won’t find in European, African or Asian snuffs. (That’s just a guess so don’t take it as gospel truth.)

P

Twas WE Garrett Scotch. I was 16 at the time, using my ten years older, brothers, lisence(really got into some trouble w/that let me tell you.) I purchased it from a Tobaccoist that would make me cream my jeans today. He had everything.

K

12 years old. cherry scented coke snuff. Procured from a curious establishment by the name of “The Freedom Shop” on 4th street in Marrero, Louisiana(on the west bank of the river, across from New Orleans) in 1972.

M

23 and WoS Bugundy. A glorious morning spent smoking good pipe tobacco, drinking well-made coffee, trying snuff and philosophising. Memories. Ahhh.

F

24 with (from the looks of it) the basic, W.E. Garrett Dry Sweet Snuff

G

21 and it was some Gawith Apricot. I took it over and over when I first got it, then my nose started getting stuffed up, later learned that me and poshl snuffs don’t get along so well

H

Two years ago at the age of 45. Took some RYO tobacco and ground it down. Burned like a… Then it was a trip to the hometown grocer for some Rooster… burned like a dickens. Over two hundred varieties later, and still trying to find my favorites.

F

15 yo in 1991 and it was a methol out of a red tap box. I sniffed a man sized portion right out of the box and it burned like hell. Didnt touch snuff again for another 15 yrs, but so glad that I did!

B

furious you beat me by one year. I was 16 and it was 90 something. Loved it snuffed regularly along with smoking cigars, pipes, rollies, and import cigarettes. Oh and dipping and side chawing. I guess I really took to tobacco really quickly.

F

That’s funny bob cause I took to all other forms of tobacco too. That menthol hit was so powerful that I couldn’t handle it. Then in my teenage brain I generalized that feeling to all Snuff. Big mistake!

S

29 and it was Ozona Cherry

P

It was around 13 or 14 i guess, not sure anymore. The snuff was Gletscherprise. Well, i am in Germany after all. XD

O

I was about 13 when I was introduced to J&H Wilsons Top Mill in the small blue tins. Used it for a whole until my mum found out and went nuts, so I went back to ciggies. Returned to snuff at 40 with Ozona Cherry. That was 15 months ago.

J

@oscarwabbit … my dad also went nuts when he caught me snuffing  prefered i smoked althou he didnt

like that either … think i typed this before but it was gallahers wit n wisdom

D

I’d have been 14 or so, can’t remember specifically what the snuff was, but one of the American scotches. Cardboard tube with a white or yellow label. It hurt like hell! I could not see what was good about snuff at all, but the romance of it never left me. Took it up again a couple of years ago and never looked back. I’m 58 now, sitting at my desk at work about to take another pinch.

I

@Toque

Did your teacher ever discover you and your mate stole his tobacco tin?

I was 26 when I sniffed my first snuff. It was WoS Irish Coffee.

A
  1. That’s bad I know - and it was bought for me by my Dad. I found an old tin and told him I wanted to collect the cute little tins. I don’t think he even knew what it was and he got it from a little shop near his business. As memory serves, the first pinch was from a round silver plastic container with a fancy twist off lid. Never seen it before or since, as I lost it soon afterwards, and it was menthol. This was in 1971 in Lancashire so I doubt it was a Poschl. What I do know is that my second pinch was Dr Rumneys in the red flip top tin and the third was Top Mill No 1 because I had those tins for years. So I have taken snuff on and off for 40 years although not properly til I was 16 and not full time til the smoking ban a few years ago at which point I used Toque to get off cigarettes.
V

Oo, that sounds wacky to try snuff or any other tobacco product so young, I mean I didnt try my first cigarette until I was 12 or 13, and I am usually reluctant to say that, I kind of feel that it makes me a scummy person, but since I have long quit cigarettes it is a lot easier to say, Thank god for snuff.

T

39  Fribourg & Treyer’s  Seville  boy what a surprise that was!!

E

19, J&H had some promotion in a magazine where you could send off for a free tin.  This first tin wasn’t a success, and I didn’t see it again for about 25 yrs.

A

They did have a very limp, thought up by the old MD to save costs, type newspaper campaign in the 70s. I think they had Geoff Capes in the ads at one point. I don’t think they have ever deigned to really care about their profile and when the total advertising ban came in just muttered ‘soft, southern jessies’ under their breath and got on with serivicing a market that never grows or shrinks.

J

@snuffster   geoff capes  advertised hedges

A

Aah, right. I suppose it has all blended into one memory.

P

Bordeaux, as a ten year old lad, courtesy of a broad-minded relative. First purchase (S.P No.1) made when I was probably thirteen. I’m now nearly 63 and have taken snuff continuously ever since.

P

"19, J&H had some promotion in a magazine where you could send off for a free tin. This first tin wasn’t a success, and I didn’t see it again for about 25 yrs. " I remember those two advertising campaigns Did you keep either of the little blue booklets that came with the tin of No.99? The first promotional wave in 1981 sent out “Would you like a pinch? (A what?)” followed by “All you need to know about snuff” in 1983. No.99 isn’t a snuff I take, but as a lifelong collector of snuff memorabilia the Blue Booklets are part of my collection.

A

@PhilipS I don’t suppose you could scan the booklets onto a post? Never seen them. My favourite item in my modest collection is the single leaf, folded, ‘make friends with snuff’. Very quaint, slightly potty little number.

N

I was 25 for my first pinch of some home made Prince Albert snuff that I made up while awaiting on an order (I get impatient sometimes).  First real snuff was a a week later of either Toque Cherry or WoS Crumbs of Comfort.

A

Outstanding man…

J

I was 29, my wife bought me a tin of WoS Ice Liquorice and Lemon Grove, and I went to town on 'em…loved it right from the off. Ice Liquorice was super-easy to take, but the nose burn of Lemon Grove took a bit of adjusting to. I’d been an on-off pipe smoker for years, but snuff consolidated my relationship with tobacco. As a singer, I’m careful regarding my tobacco intake, probably smoking four or five bowls of various pipe tobaccos a week and snuffing a few times a day, sometimes less. I go through phases with both, I’m currently LOVING the pipe and have been building a terrific collection of quality vintage estate pipes which I’ve been lovingly restoring. I’m sure I’ll soon be favouring snuff again for a while, though…I love variety.

_

I was 21 a month ago and got toque tins in the mail.

P

I’ll see if anyone I know has a scanner, Nigel. The most significant aspect of the first 12 page booklet for me was the invitation on the back cover to visit Westbrook Mill - an invitation I took up. While in a Sheffield tobacconist I noticed advertised tours of Sharrow Mill and, luckily, was able to tour both mills the same day.

S

I used snuff as my first introduction to tobacco - one of the miners where I grew up in Yorkshire gave me a pinch when I was about 7, I’ve no idea what it was, but it probably wrecked my young mind. The first time I bought snuff was when I was around 14, and I bought a tin of J.H. Wilson No.1 in the little blue box.

H

My very first was when I was very little, but I didn’t sniff it. I remember my grandmother would sit out on the porch with a can of Garret’s Peach with a stick that she chewed the end off to look like a brush. She’s dip the stick in her can of snuff then stick it in her cheek. One time I snuck some by sticking my finger in the can and then into my mouth when she wasn’t paying attention. I don’t remember what I though of it, but that was the first time. The second time was about 17 years later, Dec 28th 2011, and the snuff was Superior and taken the proper (if unskilled) way through the nose lol.

J

I was something like 16 and the potheads I knew bought some from a cigar shop.  It was some brand of apricot.  I tried it (not knowing how hard to sniff, and Im sure they didnt either) and it was a sneezy black tissue experience. I dont remember the apricot smell or anything else about it really.

Fast forward to today (10 years) and Ill be trying it again as soon as my ship arrives.

I asked my father a couple years ago about snuff, and he said his grandfather would take copenhagen wet snuff, put it on his hand, and snort it up there.  He must have had steel juevos.

B

11 years old .Snuff make in France and packaged in Philadelphia Pa., Coke Snuff was on the label .A non tobacco cherry menthol in a turn tin.The closest match today is snuffy weiss by Ozona. It brought me back to those times when I was care free hanging out at the nostalgia boutique ;where I had sand candles on consignment to sell to the hippy generation .I had snuff I lot of different things since then some better then others and I wouldn’t change a thing

T

28 years old and had never even seen it before other than in the movie Inglorious Basterds.

I’d been smoking since 22, and popped into a newsagents in town and saw a pack of snuff’s next to the cigarettes, and bought it just to try something different.

The snuff I bought turned out to be Menthol Sturco by McChyrstal’s and the experience and menthol hit was so good I bought a load of different snuffs after, and to find out there were so many different types and flavours I knew I would end up replacing my cigarettes with them or at least cutting down. I ended up quitting cigarettes without even having to try.

Y

18, I heard about snuff so I ordered some. McChystals. Stopped for 3 years and started again last week.

S

39, this year, Ozona Cherry, I think.

J

Aged 15 or 16, so that would be 1986/7. Wilson’s S.P.No1. I have taken snuff on and off ever since. I started smoking cigarettes when I was 13, though. Haven’t had a cigarette since January 2003, but came back to snuff seriously about a year ago. It’s amazing what you can get now thanks to the Internet!

S

I was 50 and my first was Packards Club. loved it right away.

B

29, WoS extra menthol. Painful and i loved it!

K

1957 ,  5 years old , Don’t know what it was , Just something my grandfather kept in a mull on a table in his living room , Something german , Burned really good I liked it .

S

24, some ground up pipe tobaccy I had. First professional snuff was Silver Dollar Original.

W

16, O&G.

Stefan

M

I was 19 or 20–tried some O&G on a whim.  Snorted it instead of sniffing it; left it alone for 16 years then decided to try it again as a way to reduce harm to my body after 25 years of smoking.

I

I was 27 and it was Wilson’s of Sharrow Menthol.  I liked to have blown my head off just opening the tin! Move forward to now three years and I’m driving my wife mad(der) with my TAD of snuffs!! I still enjoy a good cigar or pipe in the evening after my twins have gone to bed, but nothing beats a good ol’ snoot full!

E

I was 15 and the snuff was one of the J&H Wilson’s in the little blue tins. Can’t be certain which one (it was over 40 years ago after all) but it was either SP No. 1 or Top Mill No. 1. Probably the latter.

T

I was 24, given to me by a priest, it was Gawith Black Rappee, I’m 54 now

D

My first time was when i was 14 or 15 and first snuff was red bull or something similar.

B

chiming in again. I was 16 my local was one of the greatest places ever and they sold to me cause they knew my parents wouldn’t be the type to blame them for my idiocy. They carried dean swift which is made out of tobacco so I had to try it. Was already on my third pipe by then (my prefrence in pipes at that time was rusticated bent briars), and settling into my prefrence with cigars. I was told years later that they kind of considered me a mascot, the teenager who knows cigars and pipes.God I mis that place it was kind of like this site but in real life and with more cigarette smokers.

G

My first pinch were about 17 ,but like most people I was thinking by the common prejudice there were no potential there.I would have to buy one McC Violet on the web by curiosity to discovered it was false.

P

I started smoking at the age of 12 and had my first pinch of Singleton’s Menthol at about 14.  I only started drinking after I turned 17. Sex?  First time was at age 10

W

I was 10 years old, but it wasn’t true Snuff. My Dad was a pipe smoker with a very wicked sense of humour and he told me he had some Indian snuff and would I like to try it.It was Curry Powder…I took a huge sniff up one nostril and took off like scalded cat , he collapsed with tears rolling down his face.He was laughing for days about it afterwards, he still relates the story now, much to his amusement still.

I am new to real snuff only having been using it for 12 months.First Snuff was Poschl Apricot bought in Sheffield (little did I know how close I was to Sharrow), now I try all sorts and am a keen fan, using my pipe on weekends and fishing trips

W

I was probably around 31 or 32 and a friend who lived upstairs from me at the time gave me one of those 6oz glass Levi Garrett bottles.
Being laid off and poor I used it as a substitute for smoking for a few weeks.
After I moved I never saw that bottle again nor ever searched out snuff again until about a month ago.

E

19, when a JH Wilson’s offered a free sample time of Medicated you could send away for.  Didn’t touch it again until I stopped smoking at 45.

J

In my teens, many moons ago… and I don’t remember what it was.

M

My first was in 2006, I was 18. I snorted some Bugler, just like those goofy guys do it on youtube.
My first proper snuff taken correctly was Gletscherprise in 2008 or '09.

P

Around 13 or 14… Gletscherprise
