I’ve been banging away at the snuff for the last few months, and as I have a busy work schedule this weekend I thought I’d take a couple of days off from the good stuff, just to give my sinuses a rest and avoid any potential affect snuffing might have on my voice when singing for long periods of time. I REALLY miss it, though. I’ve got a tin of Best Dark and WoS Strawberry in my pocket as we speak, and have resisted them since bedtime on Wednesday! I might allow myself a pinch of Best Dark and a glass of wine after tonight’s gig though, only one more to go tomorrow so I’ve earned it… Anyway, my question is, how often, if ever, do you take a break from snuff? I sometimes encounter a dull earache and find if I have a day away from the snuff I’m back to normal again and can snuff away for another couple of weeks with no ill effects at all. Would love to know your thoughts!

B

I never take a break from snuff! Theres a few days occasionally when the cigs take over and I only have a pinch or two but I find if I stop snuffing I get congested and whatnot.

S

Never, even wake up during the night for a sniff.

E

Take a break from snuff? Now that’s a novel concept!

S

Nope! No breaks for this fella! Out of curiosity, have you ever experienced vocal problems as a result of snuff? Because I frequently take a pinch right before I go onstage and have never noticed anything.

B

only when I’ve been broke. I’ve also learned the hard way that often if you are reacting poorly to snuff and it’s bothering you it’s best to perserve. Because often times the irritation isn’t the snuff itself but snuff and some stupid virus trying to make an in road into colonizing your head orafices. If I keep snuffing at these points I have found I’am less likely to get sick.

I have a rather embarrassing problem that I’ll post here on the world wide web. I usually smoke often and snuff little, but today I was at my new job where I can’t smoke. I snuffed all day instead, which was fine, but I also had to visit the bathroom several times as a matter of extreme urgency. I don’t remember having eaten anything that could have given me food poisoning. I was wondering if the snuff, perhaps being swallowed post nasally, could be having a laxative effect, or is it just a coincidence?

B

@doctorbeat, nicotine will have a laxative effect in high enough doses. How high depends on each individual. I think you may have found your level. @jinder, I take breaks whenever the spirit moves me, so to speak. I’m mainly a snus user, so nicotine isn’t much of a consideration, but sometimes I’ll skip a few days of snuff, and sometimes I’ll go weeks without skipping snuff for an hour.

J

Prob coincidence but remember nicotine is a stimulant ! Any stimulant can do that to you , how much did you use ? Pinch size etc ?

D

I’ve experienced the laxative effects of nicotine before, but usually momentarily and from smoking. I thought maybe snuffing was different, as I imagine a good part of it works its way from the back of the throat to the stomach. My usual usage is a pack of cigarettes a day, snuff maybe once a day or less. Today, because of work, I went from a cigarette an hour to a smallish (apple seed?) pinch of snuff per nostril every 30-45 mins. Incidentally, I worked for ten hours today without a smoke. Since I started smoking nearly 20 years ago, I have only gone without a cigarette (while awake) for this long twice before. I went to LA on vacation (from England) and couldn’t smoke for 11 hours each way. Being able to do this without craving nicotine was a big deal for me. Whenever I have experienced the laxative effect from smoking, it has been accompanied by a nicotine buzz. No nicotine buzz from the snuff today, just enough to keep the craving at bay. Hopefully it’s just a coincidence, because I’m hoping to dramatically cut my cigarette habit by snuffing instead. @Jinder: I didn’t mean to hijack your thread! I’m glad you started it, because I’m also interested in the long term effects of using snuff for the above reason.

H

None for several years.

D

Well I guess it was a coincidence, because now my wife has it too, and she doesn’t snuff. Guess it must have been the Wendy’s we had the night before, it did look a bit rare. So good news that I can keep on snuffing, but I’m pretty upset because I always thought girls didn’t poo.

B

or just a flu or just as likely something you touched.

B

get a neti pot just got one today. And my nose is so thankfull.

J

Lol ahhhhh nooooo I love Wendy’s !!! It can’t be the Wendy’s … Prob a bug, food poisoning takes effect much quicker !

D

I have just had a pretty mean cold, so it was probably something to do with that. I think we should stop discussing my bowels now and get back on to Jinder’s topic :o) Jinder, did you try a neti pot as recommended by bob? We have one at home, but I haven’t tried it. I’ve tried saline spray and that cleared me out ok. It sounds like your eustachian tubes are getting blocked. I get a similar thing sometimes when I blow my nose.

P

As others have suggested, get a neti pot or the squeeze bottle equivalent. Flushing your nasal passages and sinuses with saline solution twice a day will probably clear things right up. Wouldn’t hurt to do a saline gargle, too, if you’re worried about your vocal chords.

O

Sometimes just through circumstances I might go an hour or two without a pinch.

P

I once had a rest from snuff - for a few days actually, after an operation for a deviated septum.

A

When ridden with cold or flu, or the occasional dose of sinusitis. I have taken strong snuff every day for 35 years and still get colds so I am firmly of the belief that the ‘snuff stops colds’ idea is a myth. Tick, tick, tick…

B

Nothing could prevent all colds. Though it can help prevent them. For one anything that clears you out a little bit helps and tobacco kills germs and viruses.

D

There was a product called ‘first defence’ in Britain, don’t know if it still exists. They claimed that using this nasal spray at the first sign of a cold could prevent it or at least reduce the duration. The idea was that it would irritate your mucus membranes, tricking your body into producing its natural defence, ie mucus. It accomplished this mainly with menthol from what I can tell. The mucus would wash out the viruses and thus eliminate or reduce the cold. This certainly makes sense in theory, a this is exactly what your body does to rid itself of a cold. The idea behind the spray was to make this happen sooner than it normally would, thus giving you a head start. Whether or not it actually works in real life is difficult to say, as it’s almost impossible to prove, but ‘clinical studies’ back it up for what they’re worth. Since snuff has a similar effect, it’s likely that if the spray really does work, then snuff probably would too, although we only have anecdotes not data.

I have not used snuff in 3 days and won’t have any for at least another week. I am missing it but it is important for me to not use it…just had delicate ear surgery and sneezing has to be avoided during healing. Sucks but I am not going thru this surgery again.

E

@zzedo310 Ouch! Now that is a very valid reason for laying off the snuff for a few days. Hope the healing goes well.

D

Funny thing is…my ear doesn’t hurt at all, I had a prosthesis put in due to conductive hearing loss. BUT my neck muscles are unbearably sore and I have a huge, numb fat lip with a sore inside the lip. All of my years of snussing never once caused a mouth sore, but a 2 hour surgery did the most damage! I am guessing the sore is a result of being intubated??? I have no clue, but it is driving me insane! No snus or snuff right now! The percocet keeps my mind off the cravings though. Thanks for the get well wishes ermtony! Have a huge pinch for me!!

E

Will do!
