How much tobacco in a jar?

ok, so im looking at half and 1 litre jars, roughly how much weight wise could i store in each for long term aging? looking at doing it with my coniston plug and balkan.

disregard my comment — read too quickly and realized it wasn’t just snuff.

on average you can fit 1 pound of flake in a 1L jar or a half pound of ribbon cut.

hmmm… this leads me to think i could try getting 200g/250g plug and stick it in a half litre.

I like storing my pipe tobacco for aging in 100 gram increments an 8 ounce jar or 1/4 litre. This way if I want to smoke some I don’t disturb the aging process of the rest of the bulk I have stored. once you open you stop the aging process.

Not sure about pipe tobacco, but for snuff you’d want the smallest jar it can fit in. The less air the better. (Actually the less surface area exposed to air the better.) Now I have my 2 pound drum of Stoker’s but I can’t see putting it into a smaller jar even though its half finished. I think the transfer process would expose it to more air than it would get in its lifetime of occasional decanting. It still seems fresh. Maybe if I was going to put it away for a long-long time, I should move it.

well im either getting this stuff online in bags (probably since itll be fresher) or in the shop, straight into a jar. i understand and agree about the snuff, though i dont think snuff is really an ageable tobacco product, but your logic is solid for preservation. im just not sure what the situation is with aging pipe tobacco, though mr shaman up there makes a very good point. i know what im like- ill be itching to open one after a year or two, so that is a very good idea.
