I find as I am just starting it’s between 1 and 2. Other times I am snuffing and I have been lowering my snussing to one portion per day. The tobacco in a pipe is pretty satisfying to me and the time smoking is enjoyable. Also do you smoke all the way to the bottom? I did this when I started only smoking half, but am now finding tirades the bottom I leave a little about the size of the end of my thumb. Seems like a waste but I think the taste diminishes.
i only tend to smoke on days off work and when i do its around four bowls. I do leave a little in the bottom as the taste gets a bit off toward the bottom of the bowl.
2-4 bowls per evening, sometimes more on the weekends. I always smoke to the bottom of the bowl, as the blends I favor (virginia flakes) tend to improve as you smoke down the bow.
more like 2 to five times a month.
I usually have one to two bowls per day, 3-4 on a day off if I don’t have much to do.
I usually have several pipes in various stages of smoking laying around all the time. Not with the Burleys though they get bitter. I would estimate an average of a bowl a day sometimes two. The flakes and plugs last a bit longer so It depends on what I’m smoking.
Just finished up a smoke of dunhill EMP and it was great. I had complained about aftertaste but slowed down my smoking and exhaled mostly through my mouth instead of my nose and the aftertaste is actually quite pleasant. This is considered an English blend, correct? I really think this type of blend suits me well.
1 or 2 bowls a day on work days, 2 to 4 bowls a day on the weekends. Before I started snuffing I smoked more than double what I do now.
4-5
I smoke at least one pipeful everyday. Most day’s is about two pipefuls, sometimes up to 5. Like tybalt, I smoke predominately Virginia blends and also smoke to the bottom of the bowl in most every case.
@Sly3904: Yes, EMP is considered an English Blend. It is what would be described as an Oriental-in-the-Front English Blend as opposed to a Latakia-in-the-Front Blend. If you like the style and are interested in a bulk variety, McClelland’s AMP is a good replica and very easy on the wallet!
2 to 4 a WEEK. gasp… In my introduction, I said I was a light user.
I smoke three a day, after each meal and snuff the rest of the time.
1-2 bowls a night during work week, and 3-4 on weekends. Snuff all the while, of course.
I go with 2 to 4 during the week and sometimes more on the weekends (during the nights) … just have to add how happy i am with the fact, that i found out about the lovely pleasure of pipe smoking and imho it goes so well with taking snuff perfect match !!!
I agree! I have been enjoying my pipefuls of mcbarren navy flake, and dunhill EMP more and more each day. I’ve only been smoking a pipe for a month and can’t stop thinking about my next tobacco purchase. I would be smoking more often but it’s winter and a cold one so far. I know their are countless pipe tobaccos available online but just can’t seem to make up my mind on a purchase. I want to try an aromatic, but one that is not overly flavored as I find I am already enjoying the Virginia and English tobaccos I have tried. I was looking at Boswell blends the price is right and they also carry tins. Any ideas for an order?
@Sly3904 I know the problem of finding the right tobacco. It´s not an easy task - at least it was not for me in the beginning since there are sooo many diffrent pipe tobacco blends. On the other hand, someone can be sure that this hobby will stay interesting for a lllloonnnngggg time. I would like to recommend blends from Dan Pipe (danpipe.de), unfortunatly the side is only in german. Some vendors have their blends oversea and they got fairly good reviews - so far i can oversee that. Blends like “Hamborger Veermaster” (flake/pure tobacco) or “Copenhagen Cavendish” (ready-rubbed/pure tobacco) are great smokes on the bright side and they got a shitload of interesting house blends (all in all they are one of the most popular pipe tobacco producers in Germany) - check them out if you can…
Especially with the aromatics it’s good to buy them in person. To be able to look and smell, is imo more important with the aromatics. With English Latakia and other non-aromatics you can learn more(but not everything) about thier flavors by the list of tobaccos in the blend. I can reccommend Nat Sherman for some quality aromatics that dont taste artificial- like thier #509, and others I can look up and add to this post later. The Tobacco Galleria has “Blue Note” and “Night Cap”(nothing like Dunhill’s"Night Cap" which is an English Lat.) these are definitely flavored but tasty and well done, and not expensive either. Perhaps peruse the current lineup of WOLarsen, which usually has some nice ones. Dan Tobacco’s “da Vinci” isn’t bad, it’s flavored with wine as I recall, also thier “Blue Note” is supposed to be good.
I used to smoke a lot more before I found snuff. Then it was probably 2-4 bowls a day. Now, since I discovered snuff, it’s more like 1-2 bowls a month. Part of it too is that it’s nearly impossible to get my favorite blends here in the US anymore. SG 1792 and Full Virginia Flake, as well as Stonehaven and Bob’s Chocolate Flake were my main staples. Especially the 1792 and FVF. Snuff is also a bit cheaper. And I don’t have to listen to the wife complain about how I stink from smoking. It seems to be a win-win situation. Sorry pipe.
Average around 2 bowls on weekdays and four on weekends.
@Bloodnativ it is the same with my girl… she doesnt smoke (never had) and often cannot go along with the smell without some comments…
@prismaster thanks I’ll check them out. Working my way now through a large sampler put together by a member here. Got a handful of the atladis aromatics(mostly tobacco galleria) and find them horrible. The vanilla seems ok but has a strange chemical aftertaste. I’m looking to try a nice aro although I’m happy with most of the English and Virginias in the sampler
@Sly3904 Atladis doesn’t really produce any top-of-the-line tobacco products. If you are looking for a good aromatic, go with those produced by McClelland and Lane Limited.
My current aromatic favorites are:
McClelland: Townsman Cavendish Blue (Maple)
McClelland: Chocolate Silk
Lane Limited: 1-Q
By the way, if you like latakia blends, you must try McClelland: Frog Morton!
@Sly3904 i love Virginias… they taste so good. McBarens Virginal Flake or the Virginia No.1 are supreme pure and sweet tobacco taste. Highly recommend imho.
@itsuke would love to smoke some McClelland… heard SO MUCH good stuff about it
Speaking of Lane Ltd. Is there any source for thier “Crown Achievement”? Or if not, what’s a good substitute. I tend to smoke a lot of pretty heavy English Latakias.
Varies. If I work out doors I fill five bowls. Not including -Morning bowl, drive to work bowl, after lunch bowl.drive home bowl.after dinner bowl and before bed bowl. that is 11,working In doors minimum 6 daily .No wonder it takes an hour to clean my pipes.I am rarely seen not without a pipe in my grill.with a lip full of copenhagen and a nose full of some snuff. I got one serious tobacco habit and loving it.
I smoke mostly non aromatics; Flakes and plugs are best. I enjoy most of Samuel Gawith offerings and the Esoterica line,Dunhill ,Escudo,Orlik,Hearth and home Ambassador’s blend and Armada.Frog Morton. Just order some black wood flake I think I will like it ;not to fond of the ketchup smell but I am going to give McCelland another go.
All tobaccos I wish to try. Some made into my last order but esoterica was nowhere to be found for me. I am smoking an average of 3 now. Would be more but my smoking is done outside
When I first started more but normally 1 to 2 a day now.
@Sly3904 i love Virginias… they taste so good. McBarens Virginal Flake or the Virginia No.1 are supreme pure and sweet tobacco taste. Highly recommend imho.
i agree
I average 6-8 bowls on a weekday,8-12 at the weekends with snuff inbetween and always a tin of snuff at my beside just in case i wake in the night.
1-3 most days, although I don’t smoke on days when I’m working (usually fri-sat-sun) as I work as a singer and don’t want to chance any sinus irritation.
Gotta update my previous answer to this question. Pipe smoking has really grown on me. I usually like smoking about 6 bowls daily now.
Generally 4-6 bowls daily, mostly 5100 and perique mix.
@Ron that’s a good blend. How much periqie do you like? Do you let it age a while?
One or two in the afternoon before work (work midnight shifts). Between 2-4 on weekend days. Occasionally I try to smoke all the way to the bottom, but usually stop when it starts tasting stale and ashy.
Smoke two a day, one in the morning with a cup of English Breakfast Tea, and one at night with a cup of Earl Grey.

I think this depends a lot on the tobacco, straight virginias and Burleys seem to be more prone to this IMO, I smoke mostly English/Balkans and don’t this problem much YMMV.
I’m sure you’re right about the tobacco making a big difference. Unfortunately, I’m not widely experienced with pipe tobaccos and I’ve been fighting to get to the bottom of a ridiculous amount of Captain Black before I branch out. Any suggestions?
As many as possible, usually between 10 and 15 bowls per day.
I’d just start out trying a couple of English’es, a couple Virginias, a couple of quality aromatics etc.repeat for a while…just to start to get the sense of what you want to explore more. Go to a real tobacconist that likes to talk business with you, and the more you try, the more you’ll know what you have to try next.
The tobacco shops in my area only carry bulk tobaccos mclelland stokkebye and altadis. I would love to visit a tobacconist with a wide variety of pipe tobaccos and good knowledge about pipes in general. I have made almost all of my purchases online since I started smoking a pipe last year. Seems most of the tobacco places around this area focus on cigars.
That’s a bummer if they don’t have enough variety. However, you might want to ask if they have McClelland’s Red Cake (5100, I think) which is a nice, natural flavor- red VA based I believe. Also they likely will have a light or medium English Latakia, then you can see if you like the Englishes without frying your tongue on a Balkan(which are very heavy). Then you can let your nose guide you to some nice aromatics.
If you are definitely going the mail order route, Robert McConnell’s red cake is very nice, earthy, not sugary or flavored and not a tongue killer. Rattray’s Marlin Flake is another good VA, and they have some nice Latakia mixtures as well, such as Highland Targe and Black Mallory. MacBaren’s Plumcake is a nice aromatic and Stokkebye makes some nice aromatics too. You should imo try one of McClelland’s VA’s (in the brown tins) at least once, they have a distinct flavor from other brands that you may or may not like, but it’s worth finding that out. As they say, have fun with it!
Usually one a day or every other.
Ive smoked about 4 ounces of 5100 so far. There is a smoke shop 30 miles from me that has it. I don’t want to drop a lot of money this month on a mail order as I have plenty to keep me happy for a while. I do plan on stopping into a local smoke shop and picking up a few bulk blends. 5100 if I can find it Mcclellan’s full English, stokkebye Balkan supreme and flakes. I know the one place that doesn’t carry any of the stokkebye flakes but am going yo look at Paul’s cigars in Beaverton. Thanks for the mail order suggestions. Ill look into those next order. I think I can find some plumcake and stokkebye aromatics for sure.
I hope you discover some faves! Just expect the Balkan supreme to be pretty intense, I would smoke the milder English’es first.
Usually just 1-2, occasionally more. Generally like a good latakia blend. If it is a good tobacco I feel it is best to smoke to the bottom of the bowl encouraging an improved carbon buildup which I think helps things burn cooler. When I smoke many aromatics I think they tend to burn hot resulting in tongue bite which I am NOT a fan of.
@Ron that’s a good blend. How much periqie do you like? Do you let it age a while?
Generally I mix 2oz. perique to 16 oz. 5100. That much will usually last 3-5 months, which is all the aging it goes through!!
Well, I am back in one of my occasional pipe phases that have been going on for the last 30 years, and I get through 50g over a week. I have to watch myself as my natural default would be more a question of how many times a day am I not smoking. I can’t resist inhaling half of it either.
During the summer my pipe smoking reduces dramatically, probably a bowl every 2 days, otherwise 3-4 bowls per day.
Weekdays normally 2 bowls and weekends sometimes I can go up to 5 bowls.
Generally just one a day after work. Snuff and Snus the rest of the time.
2 - 4 lately
As many as i want. Nothing is more relaxing than a pipe, it keeps my head straight, and is relativly harmless- so i’ve been told. The only stress i can find is making sure my cellar is sufficently stocked(pipe+snuff=poor).
I pretty much have many different pipes hanging from my grill, most of the hours of the day. Before igniting them I load my nose up with snuff. It make the experience that much more enjoyable. Even when they are spent It’s still hanging. Stupid air keep trying to get in my nose and mouth.
Now that I’ve been able to branch out and am starting a nice little collection of pipe tobaccos, I seem to be smoking a lot more. Funny that I started snuffing to get away from smoking cigarettes, and now the snuff has got me on to pipe smoking… Oh well I seem to have a pipe lit most of the day now (not sure how many bowls that is).
I worked my my way up from 1 bowl every other day or so to anywhere from 1 to 4 a day, usually 2 or 3
