How isolated are we???

J

Just wondering, how many snuff-takers do you know, outside of the Forum? In my life I can’t think of one person ( of course I have cigar-buddies and dip users though )!

E

Yep, a big fat 0 here in NZ. Would be so lonely without Snuffhouse :((

S

Zero here also

C

Wonder what the prospects would be for regional snuff conventions, to get disparate snuffers under the same roof for a weekend. Or at least a gathering of snuff enthusiasts as a subgroup at a pipe or cigar event. Hm. :-?

J

@cpmcdill that’s a cool idea…would be nice to meet the people on here and of course enjoy snuff with y’all!

B

no idea I’ve actually peeped a few people using snuff it some people get excited to see me do it. I think most snuff users are more likely to not advertise or join internet groups. Have often been suprised by people who ask if they can have some and ask where I get it.

B

Only my converts, I have yet seen anyone in public using snuff. although I don’t get out that often anymore.

S

I personally know zero other snuff takers in real life. I know they are out there because someone is buying it at the local tobacco shop, but I am reticent to stalk the shop in hopes of finding who they may be.

J

@sgtjon i know what you mean. There’s a 200 year old smoke shop in Harvard Sq. that I like to go into and they have a tiny snuff offering. Someone is definitely buying them ( maybe European tourists? ) but I once purchased some and the girl behind the counter said " eeew why would you want to use that stuff?!" haha wth? you work in a smoke shop with cherry cavendish dripping from the walls!!!

C

… I once purchased some and the girl behind the counter said " eeew why would you want to use that stuff?!"…

Oh, very bad thing to do. In some stores, employees can be fired on the spot for criticizing or otherwise belittling the purchase choices of a customer.

M

none

I

I have seen none, converted none. I have gotten some to try some but, they will not repeat use.

I

I mostly want another snuff person to talk to outside of the forum when, my new snuffs come in. It would be nice to share the new snuff experience with some one. Hopefully they would share back. I have converted one person onto snus but, he refuses to try snuff. He also use to chew so that helped with the snus conversion.

E

Nobody at all. Talked about it some, but nobody bit the hook.

J

One other person, but he lives in another province. Still, we chat and exchange pipes and snuff and other products at sporadic intervals, and I look him up when I’m in his town.

S

I remember someone recalling a similar experience when they inquired about snus at a cigar shop - apparently the guy working the counter berated them over putting that stuff in their mouth. While I appreciate the fact that some folks may not approve of things I do, like, etc, but there is no need or reason to break someone up over it.

J

None here in north TX. Cannot even find it in shops here. When I have asked many are confused only a couple have had any knowledge of it and said that they did not know how to help me find any.

J

Unrepentant snuffer here in DFW. PM sent J_S

J

@jimbo69 replied, I think

I

@oldman357 lives here in Albuquerque, NM…then there are a few “occasional” snuffers that will accept snuff from me when ever we hang out but don’t seem interested in purchasing any their private use, so I would say one other snuffer. In an unrelated side note, @jimbo69 how common/available are traditional American Scotch snuffs in the DFW metroplex? If readily available where do you purchase them? My sister lives N. of Dallas and I figured I could do some tobacco shopping while on a visit.

N

I wouldn’t say they are regular users, only when I supply them with it, but I would say 3-4, plus a buddy in KC that has really gotten into snuff…

M

I don’t know anybody at all who takes snuff. However, last Saturday a friend of mine came into the bar I tend, and ordered a beer on tap. As I pulled the ale into a glass, he said he really needed to quit smoking, " these cigarettes are killing me!", were his exact words. Casually, I took out a 20 gram tin of J & H Wilsons Sp # 1 snuff, tapped on the tin a few times, took off the lid, and offered him a pinch. He didn’t know how to take it, so I explained, took a couple small ones for a demo, then had him do the same. He asked if it really had enough nicotine to do anything. I explained to him that yes, positively, it has more than enough to satisfy even the heaviest cig addiction. I then took out a 10 gm tim of Toque Spearmint, offering him a pinch. He really liked it. No sneezing at all. Then I told him that the local Smoker Friendly store carries all the Toque USA flavors, that he needs to go there and get a bunch to see what he likes. SO, I finally, after years of trying to convince the people I know that snuff is the best way I know of to enjoy tobacco, I actually had a positive experience with another person in relation to snuff. I only bartend one night a week at this place, so I’ll be curious to see if he got himself a few tins. I’ll bring an assortment with me to share, just in case he wants to learn more about it. Some SG Red Crest, some Dholakia( not white or black), maybe some Himtaj Golden, and for sure some Poschl menthol bombs!

J

@mrmanos that’s so awesome. I’m planning on bringing some for a couple of friends at work ( one an ex- smoker who loves tobacco but hates the ill-effects of smoking and one a current cigar aficionado ) and see what they think. I know they have never tried snuff but I think would interesting to see their reaction. Hopefully they’ll enjoy it and then I’ll know two!

M

Very cool. I myself quit cigars totally when I started taking snuff “full time”, about 5 years ago. I did it as a teenager, way back in the early 70’s, but rediscovered it accidentally when I saw the Silver Dollar snuff display in my local store. Then found Toque’s website, then Mr Snuff… now I only smoke what I grow in my garden here in the “high” country of Colorado.

J

yeah its strange…i like an occasional cigar ( 4-5 a year ) but that desire has waned compared to getting back into snuff ( i first tried as a teenager in the 80’s and again in the early y2k ). i think I needed to try something other than Ozona cherry Mr Snuff is great and of course getting acquainted with Old Mill’s Chef Daniel was just plain lucky for me… pretty cool you grow your own- i would like to try that sometime, just for kicks>>> I’ve been to Colorado before ( Denver, Boulder ) nice State!

T

This is a good question, nobody that I know of takes snuffs however quite a few of my friends have tried it via me.

D

Two frequent my local.

S

In my town I met a snuffing girl… Pretty and very seductive when she’s taking a pinch. But she’s not on forums and just buys plastic tap boxes that our tobacconist offers. I think a large number of users out there is a bit ashamed for their habit…

N

Zero

T

I have found out that one of the pubs in my town allegedly sells snuff behind the bar. They did it when the smoking ban happened. I am going to check it out.

P

Zero, but I have observed a few women from the senior building buying W.E. Garrett Sweet. They don’t snuff it, they dip it.

H

I’ve run into a couple of people over the years who occasionally sniff American snuffs you buy at Food Lion. Literally two people though and they were both very occasional. And they were just young people who saw the snuff in the check-out line and decided to try it. I met a woman whose ex-boyfriend used a lot of snuff but I never met him just heard about him. I have gotten pretty much all my friends into it to one degree or another only one does it regularly and buys it though.

J

We’re stranded on an island kind of isolated and the island is this forum. Although, it took me a while to find snuff and I like to believe that there are a number of snuff takers out there that just don’t know they’re one too… yet. Maybe a snuff reality show is needed?

J

@Ivan, I have been through N. Dallas areas, although no Plano too much and I have not found anyone selling any snuff at all. Hope @jimbo69 can be more help.

M

@jmahes I asked about snuff on two different tobacconists here in Santiago de Compostela that gave me very rude answers. To be precise, the same answer with the same stresses: “NO, we don’t have THAT”. They obviously knew what snuff is, but they seemed pretty hostile about it, don’t ask me why. A friend of mine, which I introduced to snuff, received the same answer at one of the shops and then swiftly proceeded to rip off a twenty cigarettes box attached to a promotional display and smoke them with gusto.

I

I know no one, have converted no one, and have never randomly seen anyone, either. My entire snuff world revolves around myself, snuffhouse, youtube, and the accountants at MrSnuff.

H

Most people here have no idea it exists. I don’t understand the hostility some tobacco clerks have towards snuff. I’d bet in most cases they have no experience with it and don’t even know what it is. Snuff is also confused with dip and snus, not that there is anything wrong with those. @cpmcdill (the only other snuffer I know in person) asked our local tobacconist if he would consider carrying some of the harder to find snuff like Toque and he was told he could get that anywhere and to go to Food Lion. Ironically, the shop owner claims he wants to carry unique products that are harder to find (like premium cigars and e-cigs) and that he is not going to carry common products like snus or dip or anything Swisher makes that you could pick up at the grocery shop. When C.P. said he meant nasal snuff, he was met with an uncomprehending glassy stare. Nasal what? He probably doesn’t even know that they have snuff at Food Lion. He was referring to loose snus or dip. It’s just that people are too quick to form bias about stuff they know nothing about. They heard someone else’s (probably equally assumptive) opinion or read something on the internet or whatever. I’ve read books on tobacco where the author will write about snuff as though an authority and when they clearly know nothing about it. One “history” of tobacco book claims that the entire purpose of using snuff is to illicit a sneeze. When I buy a Swisher scotch at Food Lion, the check out kids almost always ask me what it’s for. Is it dip? My friends always ask me if it’s legal.

W

Only one person, he did not have any nor bought ever but knew how to take a pinch without sneezing. I´ve asked on at least 10 tobacconists for snuff in Barcelona and had mixed responses between “don´t know what are you asking for” and “we don´t carry that shit! go away you junkie” only 2 had snuff (very old Gawith Apricot under the counter).

M

@Wulfensteinsson : Your tobacconist experiences reminds me of one I asked about snuff in Pontevedra about two years ago. He said, with a nostalgic stare in his yes: “I no longer carry it, sorry… my only customer was an elderly Moroccan man and he… well, he passed away last month”. Sad story! But we’ll honor the older generation of snuff takers with our own dedication to this art. Anyway, and to keep on topic: I introduced several friends to snuff, and one of them buys a tin at the tobacconist with certain regularity. Other than that, I’ve heard of two different young guys and a girl that use snuff daily, at least one of them ordering snuff abroad. Every time someone told me he knew someone who used snuff my heart rejoiced! Neffa is also popular with North African people, and I’ve also heard about some people whose Moroccan friends introduced to that potent kind of snuff. Thinks look mildly positive for snuff here!

I’ve interested a few co-workers in it, but once they move on to other jobs I don’t know if they keep it up, but a few weeks ago I was doing a gig with one of the bands I’m in and after we packed away our gear the bass player’s girlfriend (who is in her late fifties or early sixties), said “I saw you taking snuff - I’ve been snuffing since I was six!” Her Grandad had introduced her to it, and she still keeps it up, with Wilson’s SP and Medicated 99 (when she has a cold). When I showed her my snuff case she said she didn’t know there were so many varieties (the two she uses were the ones newsagents always used to stock in the UK), so I said I’d give her some samples from my collection in spare tins that I have when we next have a gig. She seemed quite keen on that idea!

V

None that I know of. I have a 2 colleagues who smoke, one is young the other a lot older. Whilst I have managed to interest the older colleague in pipes and cigars, the younger is less interested. On the contrary however, the elder isn’t really interested in snuff saying he’s unsure about putting something in his nose whereas the younger happily took a small pinch of WoS chocolate orange. Needless to say he was unimpressed! Though I think I may manage to eventually convert my older colleague, it will be a long battle! I think meeting up with fellow snuff users would be fantastic! As a novice I would greatly value meeting with another more experienced user for what they could offer! This forum is a wonderful place, but there’s not much better than hands on help!

T

I was the first that started rolling my own tobacco. Then I kicked the habit using snus. Then I replaced snus for snuff. All my friends are still on a step Nr. 1.

J

Only one in real life, and a few more who will take a pinch at Lodge dinners.

J

i’m going to offer snuff to a couple of buddies today and see what happens

J

I buy all mine online. I just get glassy stares when I ask at the pipe/cigar shops.

N

Greetings All You Snufflovers!! >:D< I’ve been able to convert a handful of smokers into snuff but they and everyone else owerhere(Sweden) don’t really understand my(and our) passion for snuff. They consider my enthusiasm for snuff as ‘crazy’, ‘odd’ and ‘manic’ for some reason… But with All You Eager Nosefillers I feel totally ‘at home’! If I would burst out in improvised and beautiful poetry ower some wonderful snuff I know there are people that truly UNDERSTAND me, ha ha! Thank You All!! >:D<

V

I have good news! It would seem the younger colleague I spoke of in my earlier post was eager to try some more snuffs when I saw him again today. So I decided to give him a good variation of the toques I received earlier on today. He seems much more impressed with these than the others I had give him to try (few WoS and a few SG) and reckons he may be paying a few websites a visit!

J

Similar thing happened to me today @vitellius‌ , 20- something pal of mine seemed quite interested in snuff ( he’s a cigar smoker ). Gonna bring a little variety sampler tomorrow and see how he likes it. Maybe I will have a snuffer in the shop ( other than myself )

S

I actually had a surprise a month or two back when I was at a friend’s house and noticed a tin of Rooster sitting on the workbench in the garage! My buddy is primarily a cig smoker, but he said he likes to keep a can of snuff handy when he’s working hard on a project and doesn’t have time for a smoke break. The next time I was over for a party, I gifted him a can of D White and he let me sample some of his Bruton’s. The Bruton’s was nice, but when he tried the White he took a big sniff and flew into a coughing fit which cracked me up (yeah, I’m a bit of an ass). Anyway some of the guys took some interest, one of whom said he used to snuff loads “back in the day” and took a massive line of Bruton’s off the back of his hand. A couple of other interested parties had a sample as well. So snuffers may be rare, but we’re around and hopefully growing.

V

@jmahes‌ good luck! It’s been good. Yesterday he kept asking what we trying next then, and it was nice to share the experience with someone.

J

@vitellius I’m here right now snuffing a sampler of 6 kinds with my friend and he likes them! He’s actually on Mr Snuff figuring an order

V

@jmahes nice! Well done sir, hopefully you have a snuff buddy now.

H

Two. Both at a monastery. I supply the snuff for my Spiritual Father, the other freeloads off of him. I have crossed paths with one or two others in my travels, but they are not personal acquaintances.

Bruton and Dholakia White. Advanced stuff - isn’t that a bit like trying to interest someone in getting a bike by offering them a try out on a unicycle?! :))

J

@vitellius I do now! He sampled some Old Mill, Bernard and Sir Walter Scott’s…he liked the big differences in sorts and flavors…He’s getting a list together for some purchases> He has used snus and loves cigars but never tried snuff. He has now

S

Hahaha, it’s just what we each happened to have on hand. I’ve another friend that I introduced to snuff with Ozona President (which was also my virgin sniff). He liked it.

V

@jmahes‌ Direct him here too, another fellow snuff convert. I think it definitely gives you a sense of satisfaction when you manage to actually pass on a love for something as underused as snuff. I agree that what seems to hook them if they do initially like it is the variation of scents, grinds and moisture levels. It’s definitely a broad spectrum and who doesn’t like that sort of thing in life?!

J

Yep @vitellius‌ he’s seen the forum last night and likes the discussions. It is really nice to share this snuffing of ours!

C

Zero, but I have a shelf with MANY snuffs on it. Any friend interested that comes over, I offer to let them take what they want. I have given about a dozen tins to various friends away. A couple say they have been doing it when smoking is inconvenient. But I really dont know. The nearest place to buy snuff here is a 50 mile drive through the mountains to a couple kinds of Silver Dollar, and if you are lucky maybe some Ozona Cherry… Well that I know of. I guess we should be glad.

E

My tobacco using friends are almost non-existent. I’m contemplating sending my Dad back in the UK a few choice beginner snuffs as he smokes like a chimney and really should at least cut down. Moving to Auckland at the end of January so might have more luck finding a snuff buddy in the city

V

I know a reasonable number of people who will partake if offered, but no-one who’s a regular like myself. I re-introduced the magic powder to a friend of mine who used to take snuff regularly in the past, and he got right back into it, but has recently stopped because he had issues with high blood-pressure and felt nicotine might not be helping this. Strange though - there must be other people in my town snuffing, because otherwise the tobacconists wouldn’t stock it. I did a bit of vague market research at a tobacconist’s in the town centre the other day, on noticing that they no longer had a tap-box of Gawith Apricot on display in the window. The owner told me they’d stopped carrying it because there was no demand, and said that the biggest sellers were Red Bull and Hedges. But in three years of taking snuff and buying the more “standard” brands from that shop, I’ve never found myself in a queue with someone else who was buying snuff.

J

So the other night I was showing my wife some examples from the Snuff Stash and after inhaling some right off the tin, she was quite perplexed. I don’t think she expected the awesome nutty, floral or spicy scents- I believe she thought it would smell of ground up camel regulars, in an ashtray Notably, old Mill Solstice made her actually say she would like to try some soon. Unbelievable, I never thought she would be into it but as an ex-smoker I don’t think she really knew what snuff could be. So, I’ll update when she actually does it…in the meantime she likes to hear some of the stories that get told around here and the history etc. So, who knows?
