I over do it a might some days, snuff all the time 10 to 30 times a day, really havent counted. Trouble is, my sinus situation is that of concrete at times. I have to snort tap water which burns like thunder and then wait for it all to get soft to blow out. Any ideas? Love the habit. Hate plugged sinus cavities. I use medicated alot and that still does not help much.
You might try a neti pot. Basically its device that irrigates the sinuses with saline solution (which prevents the burning sensation you get with regular tap water). They are available at your local Walgreens, and are fairly cheap (around ten dollars or less). Many folks on here swear by them.
Ok I got it. Basically ‘NORMAL SALINE’ I used to be a pharmacy tech, wierd huh. at univ of Iowa yrs back. If you mix reg table salt and distilled or bottled water in a small batch, shot glass works fine. make it about as salty as ‘tears’ would be, then you have NORMAL SALINE SOLUTION. pretty much what is in those snort bulb items. I always forget to buy them at the store but I will for sure dose myself heavy with it in a minute before bed time…Thanks. I had forgotten about that. Must like the tabasco burn of tap water. Not really, just lazy and forgetful
Snuff causes congestion, a sad but inesacpable fact, however much we love it. Happens to me all the time. I just wait it out when I get a bad attack - as I have over the last few weeks - light up my pipe and don’t worry.
@snuffster I hear you say that a lot but what makes you think snuff actually caused congestion ? Not being funny I mean just interested as snuff is ment to clear our sinuses is it not ? Yes I understand menthol being a problem but don’t get the normal plain snuff ?
Insnuffalating large amounts of any particles into your nose causes congestion, its part of your bodys natural defences, it helps to ensure that these particles aren’t going to make it into your lungs.
When I get a little clogged, there are certain snuffs that actually break my sinuses loose to where I can get, (for the want of a better phrase), a cleansing discharge. So that keeps me from from being packed full of old snuff. Then a good saline cleaning before bed at night, and I’m good to go the next day. But the actual swelling of the sinus tissues, as @Snuffster and @n9inchnails mention, is a normal. And avoid those over the counter nasal sprays! They are the worst thing you can use. They cause massive sinus ‘rebound’. You can become as addicted to them as any narcotic. Trust me - I learned the hard way…
@joe - snuff isn’t ‘meant’ to clear congestion; its just a way of taking tobacco. The medicated ones were, generally, made for that though. I say is because it’s true. Snuff causes congestion, as the many posts of people with blocked nostrils seems to back up. But its a matter of degree, snuff, over used, causes congestion and anyone that takes too much - for them - will experience it. I say it as a comment when people say they have taken too much. I do it myself all the time.
Ah ok thanks @snuffster !!!
That’s one of the reasons that I high nic hit snuff is so handy. It’s not so I can vegetate in my little spinning world, it’s so I can take smaller pinches less often. I like snuff enough that I would love to just keep a constant flow of it running through me at all times, but I just can’t handle having that much crap in my nose. Even with menthols, it just plugs me up after a little while. So, I aim for a super high nic snuff, less often and save the fun ones for a treat instead of all day use. I remember people saying they were 5 - 8 grams per day in a previous thread, but there is no way I could handle that much. The nicotine wouldn’t bother me, the sheer quantity would. And, as others have said, a Neti Pot or Sinus Rinse kit is the absolute best. I prefer the sinus rinse because it seems to reach places that my Neti couldn’t get to. In the US, Costco has a kit with two bottles and 250 packets of the solution for around $20.
Actually a hot cup of tea an hour before going to bed helps a great deal for me. I stick my nose in the hot stream and inhale the water vapor. Plus drinking water is recommended to get rid of a stuffy nose, which is often related to dryness of the mucus membrane. If I don’t want caffeine I just go with a tisane (herbal tea).
thanks folks for the info. My case is probably caused by snuffing all the time. My wife took count today, she claims I snuffed 10 times before getting out of bed and caught me at it another 20 or so times during the day. Guess I got a jones for it. At least it is cheap and legal.
Are you a smoker?
I use medicated snuffs only once or twice a day to avoid swelling the sinuses up too much. With other snuffs that tend to cloy I will intersperse with an American Scotch as those tend to clear out, dry up and seemingly reduce any swelling I have going on. There is also some care that I take with my diet to limit mucus creating foods such as dairy products, beans, wheat, peanuts, and corn etc…
dairy doesn’t create mucus. That’s an old wives tale. Silly food rumours.
Perhaps then it is what is consumed along with dairy products. I find it much easier to listen to the wisdom of old wives then to follow the isolated facts of scientists.
Since my monetary situation is at best…GRIM. I made some CHEAPO-SAL-SOLUTION…geez it works almost as good as the famouse Neti-pot only not as pretty. Took two pieces of cycle gas tubing, NEW about 4 inches long each. Stuffed em up my snozzola , then snorked up the soln of saline water with a pinch of arm and hammer til I gagged from a shot or perhaps better called a SNOTS glass. VOILA problem solved. My wife laughed her hynnnneeee off when she saw me do it. Gonna buy the neti pot tomorrow. She will never let me live this one down. Probably end up on facebook.
I’m sorry, but looking at your pic and imagining fuel lines running out of your nose? I’m dying here… LOL A dual feed, double pumper neti pot! No doubt the supercharger version comes out next year…
Chrome plated, of course.
@graybeard19: As you noted in your amusing story, the prepackaged version is buffered with sodium bicarbonate. If you want to mix your own, formula for one dose is as follows: sodium chloride 2300 mg, sodium bicarbonate 700 mg, dissolved in approximately 177 ml (6 fl. oz.) of water. But read the instructions that come with the neti pot. The water is supposed to go in one nostril and come out the other. Remember to keep your mouth open, and you’ll do fine.
