Hello everyone! I have been having quite some trouble trying to use Samuel Gawith Black Rappee. Either it hits my throat or it doesn’t stay in my nose. So what is the best way to take it and similar snuffs? With best regards Mattias
I find that some snuffs just tend to be like that, no matter what technique you use. Another poster on this forum introduced me to the “bunny sniff” that I find helpful for really fine/dry snuffs that just shoot straight to the back of your throat: inhale until you almost have a full breath, then do a gentle quick sniff at the end of that inhale, sniffing up the snuff. Or, you can try the “swipe and wipe” technique–pinch some of your snuff between your thumb and index finger. Swipe it flat onto your index finger, then insert your index finger into your nose and literally wipe it around inside your nose where you want it to go. like picking your nose, only you’re going to wipe your snuff up in there
After the snuff is up in there, maybe pinch your nose together for a few seconds to let your nose moisten the snuff that’s in there. some may still drip back out, but hopefully enough will stay up in there for you to enjoy.
@TheCompulsiveGambler, you may also consider setting out a small portion of the snuff to let it dry out if you feel it’s too moist. Or some posters have mentioned adding a few grains of rice to the tin to dry it out some. I kinda like moister snuffs, but if it’s so moist it’s globbing up and preventing you from sniffing it, I would try drying it out if the above sniffing techniques don’t work.
@TheCompulsiveGambler - Have you tried using a snuff spoon and placing it at the end of the nostril by the point of your nose? I personally find a spoon really useful for course moist snuffs @stormtracker_wv 's tips are also useful, and worth trying to see if they suit you. I’m very fond of Rappee, and hey its a really traditional classic form of snuff, so its worth mastering to get the best out of it I take a lot of London Brown which is pretty much the same snuff as black rappee. Another trick that I used many moons ago was to use a bullet for these types of snuffs {I know this will sound odd and others on the forum may disagree as bullets aren’t much loved on this site}. But, I found that if you put the bullet in your nose horizontally/side on, rather than vertically, and sniff gently/tip your head back slightly, so it almost ‘falls’ into the lower portion of your nose only; that works great. Although this lacks the panache of other snuff taking methods it will allow you to enjoy these fine snuffs without throat hits, which with a rappee are strong and gritty - not good!
Also don’t be concerned with crumb falling out of your nose, this is perfectly normal for these types of snuffs and goes with the territory. Best not to sniff back with rappee once it’s in there either, as if you do you may find the ‘drip’ from these snuffs isn’t to your taste, blow gently out through the nose instead to keep them from reaching the upper portion of the nose/sinuses. Best to just relax and let them melt in there and release their famous lovely rich scents and then blow them out when their ready; I find course snuff always facilities a ‘blow-out’ for me
- A snuff hanky is a good accessory to have an use here, a nice black or dark brown one will serve you very well
Good luck with these snuffs, they’re really worth getting to grips with
BTW: Have you tried the Viking range? If you like black rappee then Viking Dark and Brown could be right up your street.
Thanks for the tips fellas, very much appreciated! I’m gonna try these soon, as i’m sitting here with a nose full of WoS Natural at the moment.
How is the WoS Natural? I like plain, natural snuff and toasts the most, and am considering a tin of Natural.
WoS Natural is a more interesting plain snuff then say, Toque Natural or QSnuff Smokers blend in my opinion. They don’t have the same depth/richness as WoS.
A 25 just went into my cart. Thanks.
@stormtracker_wv the “bunny sniff” combined with a thick “line” on the back of the hand worked relatively well for Toque Natural Toast. And the IMO awkward “swipe and wipe” did work with the Rappee, although it wasn’t completely satisfactory. So i thank you very much for those tips! @MisterPaul i’m such a senile fool (and yet only 23 years old)! I was placing an order at MrSnuff to specifically buy a snuff spoon and bullet, instead i bought 6 snuffs and forgot completely about the snuff gear! So i guess i’ll have wait to try your bullet method in the end of this month as i already has placed 3 orders at MrSnuff this month… A lot of shipping fees for only a little snuff XD
You can find some great prices on really good snuff bullets on Ebay too (not to take away from Mr. Snuff, I love that store, but I know the shipping is a little high if you’re just purchasing a few things, so I sometimes go to Ebay for accessories). I just got a lot of vintage snuff spoons from there for $7 and some change plus free shipping…got some of the glass bullets w/acrylic plastic tops in a lot of 5 or 6 for under $10, and some higher quality aluminum ones that came in a lot of 4 for less than $10 including shipping. I appreciate all the great info everyone has added on this, as I have some very fine snuffs that I have a little trouble with but love (Freberg & Treyer’s patchouli is really good but very dry and hard to get in the bowl of the nose, same with the American “Scotch” snuffs). @MisterPaul brings up a good point about using the bullet more pointed toward the outside of the nose to get the finer snuffs where they’re supposed to go. And I too still find the back of the hand method to be a good technique. Now I’m interested to try the Brown, Black Rapee or WoS Natural
