When I started i used the back of my hand. Now I usually spill a bit on my thumbnail and then sniff twice. Ive tried lines but then it gets into my throat everywhere aswell. Ive also seen people taking pinches but you can’t wide open Pöschl’s boxes. How do you sniff snuff?
Pinching for me is the only way to go, even with Poschl, you tip a bit on the back of your hand and pinch from there. Stefan
Pinching is my preferred method but also use bullets quite a bit. Fortunately, the only Poschl I really enjoy much is Packards Club and the dispenser can be used as a bullet of sorts with a little practice.
Walrus 1985, that’s the way to go, for ME!! Either pinch from a snuffbox or tin, otherwise tip some tobacco on the back of my hand and pinch from there. Bullets deliver to small amounts at a time. To much trouble to turn, shake, turn, sniff… takes to much time for to little snuff!! When I want snuff, I want it NOW!! But, every rooster on his own “snuff heap”, there is NO right or wrong as far as taking your snuff is concerned. You do it the way YOU like it. Period.
Pinching is the thing. You can do it with Poschl by just tipping abit into the palm of your hand and pinching that. It seems to be the only neat way of taking snuff, with the possible exception of a bullet.
I like pinching so far. I have Poschl, so I had to tip some into my hand first like snuffster says, but the pinch keeps it from making a mess.
Always pinched - still do
Viking, I agree, Wilsons make very nice snuff indeed. I also love their snuff. Where do you buy 250g containers? But you should really try some Toque, Roderick makes some wonderful snuff. My favourites are Toque, Dholakia, Wilsons and Bernards. Cheers Pieter
The Wilsons I’m talking about is Wilson’s of Sharrow. Wilsons No99, which I don’t like, is from J&H Wilsons. The fact that Toque snuffs are shipped post free makes a big difference especially if you compare prices with snuff from the USA. I’m not keen on menthol myself but McChrystals O&G is very nice. I use it every day.
I tend to put the snuff on the back of my hand and either sniff from there or pinch. I have a snuff bottle with a spoon in which I use for finer grinds. Not really too keen on bullets. Actually, have just found out they’re pretty handy if you fancy a snuff whilst washing up!

Here’s a good way I found early in my snuffing career. Works great for the Poschl type containers even on a windy day. Very little loss if any. Tom NicotineRush.com
Was there supposed to be a link in there, bakdoor?
the picture doesn’t show?
And here. I often use that method with Schmalzlers when I’m outdoors. Very effective.
Nope. Can’t see a picture. Stupid computer.
Don’t see it here either…
LINKTry this
bakdoor that is how I often do snuff like poschels or any that come in the tap out containers. It definatly works on windy days well. Though I just love my spoon it’s my favorite way to snuff. No snuff box yet but a nice spoon.
Sorry, it says, “The server can not find the requested page”
I see it fine on FF3.
Works fine now!
The pic on the first page comment #28 shows up fine on my end.
Shows up fine for me now too. Maybe everytime I looked at it, something was going on with the servers. Nicotinerush.com has been dealing with server issues the last few days.
Ah, yes. a good method.
Hopefully it’s all straightened out now. Host changed me to a new server. Took a total of 14 hours and they did it on a Saturday night! Tom
bakdoor i use that method too
About two months ago I posted here that I couldn’t use the pinch method, because it hit my throat etc… I got it worked and I mostly pinch now. In my opinion pinching gives full experience…I recall someone say like the body adjusts itself… I have to agree.
Pinch every time for me, as well as the control its cleaner - well, I always get over my face using the back of the hand.
I’ve been pinching and rubbing the last few days. Seems to really bring out the complexities of snuffs and also no throat problems at all. Though for some still using the spoon. Santo Domingo works great with a spoon.
I’ve been thinking about pinching off a spoon for the F&T tubes. I should try spooning some on the back of my hand too but I just can’t seem to get the spoon past my nose.
Usually it’s a pinch of snuff for me from a smash box, but if I do use another method, it’s the dimple area between stretched thumb and arm. When I take a pinch, I take a sniff from the left first, then slowly release my finger tips on the right. I like to flip which side I start on for pinches after some time. Besides liking the lore and traditional sound of taking “a pinch of snuff”, I find that literally doing so has benefits (please bear with me ;-): - I find snuff between warm fingers allows the snuff’s general aroma to release some before bringing it to the nose for sniffing, - the snuff residue on the fingertips is aromatic and pleasant to enjoy briefly afterward, - slowly and deliberately having the fingertips rub together immediately after a pinch can create almost a tiny bit of visible paste-like tobacco, which when warmer and more moist at this point offers a fragrant finish, (I don’t always do this; maybe every 5th pinch or so. The other times I’ll just kind of quickly flip the fingers together a few times with a flourish.) - much less chance of me getting snuff on the face, - easier to get portion sizes without a separate tool, a ‘pinch’ with thumb and forefinger versus measuring it with a tool, then maybe having to level it off (seems like I get a feel with different grinds how to pinch to get the desired amount), - often better during “business hours” if one wants to take a pinch with others in close proximity without them knowing as it’s more stealthy - if I am looked at funny I act like I was just feeling my mustache area in a pondering moment or felt a sneeze starting or something; with having it on the hand the brown remnants of a snuffed tobacco mound on the hand has been difficult to conceal unless quickly blown off or otherwise removed, and it looks less natural I find than having my hand up by my face. Downsides are that I can’t visually enjoy the color, texture, grind, etc of the snuff nearly as much as when taking snuff off the hand in other ways.
I pinch from open containers, but I don’t mind back-of-the-hand if it’s from a tap-can or what have you. Poschl’s comes to mind, but because of its moisture and casing it’s not very messy. In my early days I tried back-of-the-hand with Scotch, with dismal results…
I have always used the back of my hand, but I pour or spoon out a big line, put it on the hand and start at one end and snuff to the other. You get lots that way.
I usually pinch from tins or bulk, and lately I’ve been mixing up my method for tap boxes. Sometimes I do it off the back of my hand, but most of the time, I prefer to place it between the knuckles at the base of my index and middle finger. Holds it nicely, and my nose fits right into the little gap it forms.
I used to prefer the sniff off the back of the hand method, and usually used this, but in time, something happened to me, and it seems if I “sniff” the snuff, I get nose congestion, intense moisture buildup, usually resulting in needing to blow my nose very soon, and/or sneezing. Maybe I got sinuitus, I don’t know. But lately, I have been taking a pinch and literally sticking it my nose and rubbing it on the inside. I wish I could just sniff it with no problems, maybe it’s my sniff technique, or a sinus condition, I don’t know. But I did read that Roderick does it like this, and on a Poschl video I saw someone doing this, so I must not be alone.
I 've been trying a method someone on here got me started on, (who, I don’t recall). It works well for me on medium to fine grinds. Just take your thumb down into a smashbox or a packed Toque tin works best. Carefully lift up a nice mound of snuff to your nose,( your thumbnail will be facing the ground as you do this). There is no pinching involved here. This isn’t the best method for outdoors and I tend to make a small mess inside sometimes, too but I love getting a rather large dose from time to time–you know the kind that takes your breathe away!. I think having the snuff pile stable on your thumb and slightly packed if you can is the key. Other than that, I do like the back of the hand for the heavier snuffs.
i (like somone else on here somwhere) use pen caps as scoops or spoons or whatever when im at my desk. ive become wuit profficent in dosing with accuracy depending on what im looking fro at the moment. it is quite easy to get a large hit like this, but sniff with care! if you are having a particualry ‘clear’ day and are using particualy dry/fine snuff, straigh to the back of the throat it will go. when im ont he go i use bullets. ive got tot he point wher ei cn operate a bullet one handed. so those re no problem i also take traditonal pinches quite frequently. usually when im walking about the house. away fromt the desk but not outside.
I usually pinch. Pinching gives you the “full” effect, or if you will, the experience of snuff. You get the full flavors that way. Taking from the back of the hand, I miss that extra aroma that I would get with a pinch, although I do take Poschl and Schmaltzers from the back of my hand, especially if they’re in a tap box. Sometimes I rub my thumb and finger together as I slowly sniff the snuff up my nose, holding the tin under my nose to catch any dribbles. Then a big smile comes over my face and I lean my head back and close my eyes for a second.
I use the pictured method for Schmalzlers and prefer to pinch everything else, except Dholakia White was a lot better controlled that way.
Most of the time i pinch since i carry tins around. I keep a bullet for when my hands are too dirty to pinch and use Tom’s fingernail method for tap out containers or out of the bullet when in public as it doesn’t raise eyebrows. Not that i really care ,everything is fine and dandy … until people start following you to the bathroom to ask for some snuff thinking it’s something else.
I hold the tin with my thumb over it. I scoop a bit on my thumb and bring tin and thumb up for a sniff. Any spillage lands back in the tin.
I use about 80% the caps of the tins. I use them as a shovel or spoon and sniff from there. The other ways are pinching and pour it on my hand from the cap. It’s like a line on my hand.
I use a soft guitar pick .
Pinching is the only way to take snuff in my book. When you get it off you can moderate the amount of the snuff as its going in. Also, if you dislike the ‘burn’ that comes from snuff you can get rid of most of that by putting the fingers holding the pinch further up your nose so it goes staright into the sinus. Now that might not look so nice but its a fact.
