Hello everyone! after a short time away, I have a question to ask all of you. Simply… How do you store or keep your Snuff safe? (from molding, going bad etc…) I was wondering because I don’t use everyone of my snuffs and I would like to keep them as fresh as possible. Thank you all!
I have taken an approach of snuffing nonstop from waking till sleep. Seems to get the job done ( Jokes aside - most I have are in small tins - never touch with fingers, only a spoon, and the Abraxas and SWS in the fridge )
I posted about this in the tobacco picture thread. I have some in vacuum sealed bags, and the menthols in their tins in a glass jar (to keep the smell to itself). All of it is kept in an airtight Snapware container. The container is kept in a cool and dry place next to my cigars, pipes, and open pt. Like @The_HP I’ve never touched my snuff with my fingers. I’ve used a clean pipe nail for some, but mostly I gravity fill my tap boxes. (FWIW I have one glass jar of Abraxas Cafe 11, and two shakers from DeK. The rest are Toque, McC, SG, F&T, and WoS. I may revisit my storage once the mail comes in from @chefdaniel.)
I use little four or eight ounce mason jars and store them in my “cellars” which are 38 gallon Coleman coolers. There’s a few pounds of pipe weed and a few dozen cigars in there too. Manages a nice constant temp, air tight and work like a charm. I still haven’t figured out whether snuff ages well or just stores well under proper conditions. It may have something to do with my insatiable nostrils, but I could be wrong.
Long term bulk go with canning procedures, everything else just sniff it! Pretty broads and all, but this really is the gist of snuff storage. Manufactures recommendations first, but when in doubt go with sterility. Sensitive as she may be, properly handled will go the distance with flavor and potency! Everything jarred that is not used right away.
I learnt when I first joined this forum to decant my snuffs into glass jars that I then stored in containers in a drawer in a cool place. However Nigel - @Abraxas - suggested that his, and the SWS snuffs, should be refrigerated so my collection of those snuffs were transferred to an airtight container and now reside in my fridge.
In the original tins and tubs in my sock drawer. Snuff doesn’t last that long around the Palazzo Malatesta.
In glass containers sealed with electrical tape or in their original tins (if they seal well) and sealed with electrical tape. Everything inside 2 chests that are inside my drawer.
Original containers, electrical tape in my dark room, on the shelf.
If the tin is too large to actively snuff through, or if I don’t use it often, it gets decanted into half-pint mason jars and stored in my utility room. It’s always dark, and cool. No worries about it going bad.
Based in the UK, I do not feel the need to refrigerate snuff, 10g or less I leave it their tins , above that I decant to a glass Kilner Jar, I keep the tins together in an air tight plastic container in a dark cupboard, never had an issue, the Kilners are in the same cupboard… Something my grandfather told me ages ago, when he decanted snuff from a jar to the snuff box for the day. 1. Dont use your fingers, use a spoon. just take what you want for the day 2.Wipe a wet finger around the lid before you re seal it No issue here in the last 7 months snuffing ~:)
@Derek_007 I would generally agree. All my snuffs are tightly sealed, but recently lost a SWS Creme du figue to mould. Artisan snuffs without preservatives (at least moists) need refrigeration.
I have others in tins, well sealed, several years old and kept in a drawer that are fine. I’ve noticed toques loose their flavour, but thanks to @Roderick s good tobacco base, they are still mighty fine snuffs.
I like the electrical tape idea. I’ll steal that. Thanks gents. Living in the PacNW its generally cool and the humidity doesn’t hang in the air like it does in the Midwest. This helps with keeping my snuff whole. Good tips.
I keep everything in the fridge, since I don’t eat a lot. There was plenty of room, I cleared off the entire middle shelf. I try to never open them for long, and usually just open them to decant or test, if it is a large tin. Smaller tins I take out a few every day for what flavors I’m feeling like.
I decant what needs such (I.e. WoS). Everything, whether decanted or not gets put into one of a few small 6 pack sized coolers. Coolers are separated by kind of snuff (I.e. menthols/mints, scotches/toasts, etc.) One day I’ll get around to decanting everything into air tight jars. Until then, only snuff with less than desireable tins get decanted
The few that I have in bulk quantity are in mason jars. I wrap my 25g tins in kitchen wrap and place in individual baggies. These go into an air tight cannister. I fill 10g Toque tins about half way as I need to. I’ve never had any dry out but I only have a dozen or so different snuffs on hand at any given time.
This thread has been helpful. I’ve used electrical tape on the tins I haven’t opened yet, decanted Santo Domingo, and moved more tins into jars to keep smells from mingling.
I’ve been storing the majority of mine - in my nose… The only problem so far has been with the quite limited space to accommodate much volume. Will just have to continue to pack it in as space allows.

Good news! I read somewhere here (maybe @Mouse mentioned it) that as we age our noses and ears continue to grow.
Tins and tap boxes go in a sock drawer. Anything over 50g goes in a babyfood jar, cleaned, and bulk in ball jars.
Mini-Mason jars in an old refrigerator in the garage/workshop.
Why would a moist snuff be stored in a refrigerator? A refrigerator is a dehumidifier. Wouldn’t it dry out the moist snuffs?
@roadking My thinking goes like this, the moist snuff is in a sealed, airtight mini-environment in the individual jar thus most of the moisture is preserved, also in an arid place like New Mexico where I live refrigerators are wetter than the ambient environment which typically has less than 20% humidity, also the snuff temperature is constant within 5 degrees F +/- whereas a typical day in New Mexico (especially this time of year) has highs in the 80s F (27 C) and lows down to 38 F (3.5 C). In sum New Mexico is a hellish place for snuff, also I keep a jug of distilled water in the snuff fridge with the top removed which adds some measure of humidity, however slight, in a year the jug is 1/2 gone.
Baby food jars, and small mason jars. I have never had 1 go moldy, but I live in the high desert ( low humidity) :bz
For long term storage I use pipe thread tape or electrical tape depending on the tin then I wrap in sandwich wrap and into a mason jar for which I have a Foodsaver vacuum sealer to suck all the air out of the jar. Should be good for almost forever. For snuff I’ll use within a few months I’ll do the same and just store it in a jar or baggie. I fought with the SG tins trying to get the top off and what I found was when vacuum sealing the jar it would pop the lid off the top tin from the vacuum (so if the top tin is not threaded it should be taped good). So how I open SG tins now is put some paper towels in the bottom of a mason jar to build up the height and put the full SG tin on top then do the vacuum and it pops it right off, if you dont use the paper towels and leave the tin on the bottom of the jar you will have a jar full of snuff : )
I use glass mason jars exclusively. I don’t worry about temperature too much, just store them in a closet. I always use a clean spoon to decant. Regarding electrical tape around original tins: I did this initially, but I found that for long term storage, it’s worthless. Assuming (wrongly) that it would be difficult/expensive to order online, I mailed five large tins of WoS SP-100 to my new address when I emigrated to the States. When I arrived in the States, and my snuff arrived in the mail, I decanted the tins into a mason jar. I had also brought one large tin with me on the plane. This was bought at the same time and place as the other five tins. I forgot about this sixth tin, and didn’t decant it into the mason jar. Five years later, the stuff in the mason jar is fresh as the day I bought it, but the stuff in that one remaining tin sounds like sand when I shake it. Completely dried out. The only original tins that I would even contemplate storing snuff in are the F&T ones, but why not just use mason jars? It’s not like they are expensive
