How do US scotches compare?

Hi I’ve got in my collection so far Toque, WoS, SG, Dholakia, Hoggarth, Poschl, F&T, Jaxons and Taxi. I have yet to try an American Scotch and wonder how they compare to the brands I’ve listed above? I’m going to order some Rooster on my next purchase -very curious about that one.

Most Amrican Scotches are similar to toasts, but with more of a smokey campfire scent and they tend to burn a little more.

@OscarWabbit, are you new to snuff? If so, the Rooster is going to kick your ass, that’s for sure. I would rather recommend something “softer” to start with, like Dental Mild. Starting off with Rooster might put you off completely from using US Scotches. We don’t want that, do we? The scotches are wonderful products but beware, some of them are very strong.

Thanks Nachman, interesting to know. Hi Pieter Really appreciate the advice, thanks. I’ve been snuffing for just over four months but I have noticed the snuffs I found hard-impossible to take two months ago, I can enjoy now, so my nose has acclimatised to some degree. Perhaps I’ll get a Dental Mild, Rooster and couple of others in 1oz sizes instead of getting one 4.6oz large tin of rooster then… Cheers e2a: any more recommendations of good starter US scotches would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would steel yourself for quite a shock–the hickory/BBQ flavours are very strong, and not everyone likes them at first. My first scotches were Rooster and W.E. Garrett, and I very nearly threw them out after the first couple of pinches. They grew on me, but they won’t grow on everyone (and of course some will like them right away).

I suggest Starr scotch for a first timer, its the easiest scotch to take that I ever tried.

Well just keep in mind that most people get the back of their head blown off on there first american snuff especially if its the rooster, but never fear it will grow back and you can try again.

Perhaps Railroad Mills Plain would be a good start. It is between Rooster and Starr in strength and smokiness. Starr to me is so mild as to be almost a toast.

The American made Scotch snuffs are hard core. They will make your nose hair grow. Not suited for Beau Brummell and his dandies who don’t like to flinch when snuffing.

Appreciate the advice guys. However, I like a challenge, so even if they’re too heavy going with me to begin with, I’ll persevere until my schnoz can comfortably enjoy them. That’s what I did with Toque (which gave me a hard time for quite a while, still a newbie really).

Made a double post for some reason.

Odd, my post made a double, I edited my double and then my original one disappeared. Anyway, I was saying, the challenge of scotches is their ultra fine grind that makes it hard to get a controlled sniff, not their aroma or strength.

I will echo the advice to begin with Starr. Its not as fine ground as the rest. Dental, Tops, Navy, RR Mills are intermediate. Garrett, Rooster, Square, Three Thistle are advanced. Bruton is sucidal. Don’t bother with the sweet ones or just maybe one as a trial. I could rate them more precicely, but that’s the general idea.

Americans are definetly worth a try just make sure you are willing to walk around with the back of your head missing for a moment.

Thank you - all very useful feedback. Thanks @Xander, I now have my shopping list for my next order. How can I pass up a snuff described as suicidal!!!?? lol Cheers guys.

Oh, quick question. Is the part of the “blowing the back of your head off”, due to high nicotine content? I’ve heard Rooster is good for vit N, is this generally the case with Scotches? Thanks

Yes, they are all well-laced with nicotine. The super fine grind puts most of the nic into circulation very quickly, in seconds really. That’s what’s behind the head rush, imho. Other snuffs like molens ao1860 and ntsu may actually have more nic, but it builds more gradually and the feeling persists longer with these coarser grinds.

Also make sure to add we Garrett scotch it’s got a nice BBQ to it. I can buy it locally. Actually only brand I can buy locally. I prefer toasts though… I’m currently obsessed with F&T high dry toast. It’s become my favorite. I’m only a few months in my snuff journey as well.

@OscarWabbit: I wasn’t joking about Bruton aka “Brutal”. Leave it alone, I’m well seasoned in scotches now, but I don’t bother with it. I can handle the fine grind, but a much better flavor can be gotten from the others. If you must pick one from USST as a starter (all three tend on the strong side) I would recommend Standard as a starter, then Rooster second. Bruton is harsh and quite acrid. Still, if you are determined to try everything…don’t let me stop you.

I have in my nose, right now, a 50/50 mix of Bruton and Ntsu. Its’ so…ah shit, I forgot what I was going to say… Edited: Oh, it’s quite…???
