I was about 7 years old and we went to visit a favorite Uncle Uncle Tom was an Eccentric English Gentleman with his monocle, yellow waistcoat and tweed suit, he had Suits of Armour in his Grand Entrance Hall and took afternoon tea with six sugars from a solid silver tea pot, he also had a Small Blue Box of “Magic Powder”, which he used to take a big pinch of and sniff up his nose with a flourish of the hand! 5 minutes later and the magic powder was dropping out of his nose and over his yellow waistcoat that is if he didn’t manage to catch it first in a flamboyant red polka dot hankie. He was a great old guy and let me have a sniff of his magic powder, I sneezed all the way home and my mum was not impressed!! Years later I have taken up Snuff myself and I now also have a Yellow Waistcoat and many Polka dot hankies but I don’t let it drop out of my nose!
@ snuffdaddy is your uncle gonna invite the snuffhouse crew over ? that would be an interesting night indeed
My first encounter was at a Winn Dixie supermarket in NC in the 80’s. I strayed for many years, then tried it again on a lark from a pipe website. Now I r hooked.
I discovered snuff while doing some research in college, and a site I was reading suggested grinding up some of your favorite tobacco and giver a whirl…so I grabbed the only tobacco I had at the time, a bit of extremely dry and old Bugler and crunched it up into a coarse “snuff.” I proceeded to wiff a copious amount of the substance into my nose/sinuses/throat through a straw, and coughed and gagged for sometime after. I did this while working as an overnight security guard, now that I think about it. Couple years later I bought some gletscherprise that I found, out of curiosity, and here I am!
I’ve been a lover of all things tobacco (minus cigarettes) for years. A friend of mine bugged me about trying snuff for probably six months. I thought he was crazy. I mean, what sane person put tobacco up thier nose, right? But I finally stopped by a local tobacco shop and purchased some Ozona Orange. It was love at first sniff. I’m now a daily snuffer.
matsnuffs, I’m surprised you actually gave it a second try. That would’ve prolly been the end of snuffing for me.
I did some research on how to actually take the snuff before I bought it, I was there everyday buying cigs anyways and the gletscherprise wasn’t exactly selling like hot cakes. I figured something with so much history deserved an honest try. Looking back I’m kinda surprised I tried it again, too.
How did I ‘discover’ snuff? Well, it was always there. Every tobacconist had snuff in stock. Simple as that. I guess that gives away my age
Lol Tony I’m only 24 but every newsagents round here sells snuff. Oh the joys of growing up in an ex pit village lol Stefan
My dad kept a jar of Garrett on the mantle. One day he let me snort a pinch off the back of his hand (Dad’s a confirmed snorter, disdaining the more gentle snuffing methods as being more proper to “eighteenth-century fops.” The gesture he makes when he says this is priceless). It made me sneeze, and for decades I thought that snuff was something people took to make them sneeze. “What a shitty habit,” I decided. This was ‘confirmed’ for me when I’d read references in literature to people sneezing after taking snuff. When people described it as a vice, I was always like, “Vice?! What the hel kind of ‘vice’ is that, they’re just sneezing!” I just rediscovered snuff last year on a tip from some guys at a forum I moderate, and have been in love with it ever since. I don’t snort it though, don’t know how my dad does it–though as an aside, he said that snuff was extremely popular when he was growing up; there were many kinds available, and that was in Grayling (a small Northern Lower Peninsula town in Michigan where I also grew up; when I was in high school pop. was about 2,000 souls).
i was watching a basil rathbone sherlock holmes movie. one guy was smoking a pipe, another a cigar, and another a cigarette and yet another was taking a pinch of tobacco in a creepy haunted house library. it was then i discovered snuff.
Saw it at the tobacco store said what is this they told me offered to let me try some before buying I said no way I’am buying two.
A Swedish friend of mine (from the internet, never actually met the guy) was talking about snus, I thought he was talking about snuff. I saw some Poschl Gawith Apricot at the cigarette store and thought it was what my friend was talking about. I’m glad I was mistaken, since I love the snuff.
Yeah…I found out about it after watching The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, then I tried it about 15 years later, when I was more than old enough to purchase tobacco products.
I first SAW snuff being taken by Daffy Duck as The Scarlet Pumpernickel (with rapid-fire sneezing), but didn’t seriously consider it until I read the Wired article on the De Kralingse mills last summer and decided to give it a whirl. Only snuff available locally was W.E. Garrett, and after the first few brain-warping times I found Snuffhouse, whose members reassured me that W.E. is a bit of hell for a first go. Ordered some Poschl’s from Tom at NicRush to start off with, and the collection has bloomed from there. And I love my scotches now.
It was pure curiosity for me. I never knew anyone that took it or even seen it done. I can’t say that I recognized it in a movie or tv either. I just kept seeing it on tobacco websites that I used when I started snus. My first was Garrett because I couldn’t wait for my order to come in. I must say though, if it weren’t for all of you on this forum I probably wouldn’t appreciate it anywhere near as much as I do today. Thank you.
My first time was in the mid 80’s in one of my junior high school classes. A female friend of mine had a tin of Ozona raspberry, and I tried a sniff in the back of the room. Thought it was neat, and soon bought some Poschl Gawith Apricot. And here I am…
very first notion of it doesnt’ really count as discovering I suppose… I guess ever since I was a kid I had this vague idea that people hundreds of years ago took a mysterious powder up their noses but I didn’t realize what it was and I am pretty sure I had it confused with mystery medicinal stuff that included cocaine and heroin and the author of the Sherlock Holmes books, the guy who wrote the Wizard of Oz and Sigmund Freud etc (mystery stuff eluded to that only odd people who invariably went a bit off the deep end may have done, Frederick Nietzsche etc, I don’t even know if he actually sniffed anything at all but he’d be the type that’s the sort of type of person I associated it with, some kind of dark backroom really taboo thing from the long ago past that even today nobody would talk about)… somehow it being a thing somebody’s southern grandmother might do was also in there (but I guess I thought southern grandmothers were snorting cocaine or heroin too, sorry to anyone’s grandmother, I mean, I didn’t know) it wasn’t until I was on google quests for the various non smoking ways you can get tobacco into you (and one “TropicalBob” over at an e-cigarette forum) that I started learning abut this really recently and had an “oHO so THAT’S what it was/is?” moment about the mysterious ‘snufftaking’ thing. I have yet to meet another snuff taker and have been going by online advice as to how to go about it (maybe if I saw another person actually taking a finger pinch that might be helpful, YouTube just isn’t satisfactorily showing me)
My first recollection is seeing Oliver Hardy take it in an ancient movie. I then found an empty can in my Dad’s shop aged about 7 and was fascinated by it. I got hold of some one way or the other and have literally been taking it on and off since then. Made the complete switch from cigs on 07.
Whistlrr nothing wrong with coked up nodding out grannies. If you’re gonna do that stuff that would probably be the best time in life to start.
