How Common is Snuff in Snuff-taking Countries?

Like the thread title says . . . One of my friends did a study abroad in London in college and he said he saw a fair number of people using snuff in bars. How about Bavaria/Switzerland? Mongolia? South Africa? @sixphoto can you estimate what proportion of your snuff is consumed in India and what is exported? And how many people use snuff in India? Is it only old people or is it common everywhere?

I have only ever met two other snuff users (or people I knew were snuff users) in my life. One was a kid in the army who conned me into trying it when I was about 8, and the other was @Firestarter0 when we met for a face to face trade. Beyond that I cannot recall seeing anyone else ever use it

I’m with 50ft_trad… I’ve only encountered 2 or 3 others face-to-face who are actual snuffers.

I do not include those who I have personally hooked on the habit.

I can answer for Switzerland. In 11 years I’ve been here, I’ve seen one other person snuffing in public. Having said that, I am a homely sort and don’t leave the house much, so I’m not an ā€˜ideal witness’.

Sorry for the double post, but edit button not showing on my tablet. When I lived in the UK, I only saw snuff use when I was in my early teens. It was Yorkshire in the North of England, so hardly surprising, but still not common.

I was told by a Dutch ski-instructor in Austria a couple of years ago that snuff was becoming more popular in Austria and a number of the ski-instructors were snuffers (this was mainly so they didn’t have to go and smoke outside in the snow though :stuck_out_tongue: ). He said, however that it was not popular in Holland. I don’t know how true this all is but it is the only time I’ve ever seen other snuffers, never having seen any at home here in the UK.

i first saw a german teenager 20 years ago using snuff in our friend group in istanbul. He was turkish but could only talk in german so we couldn’t ask what it was. Now i can clearly remember that the snuff was gletcherprise. And about 8 years ago i saw an old man taking snuff in the bus. I live in a small city so i know he is a tailor. Also the old attar who sells snuff uses it. He says some of his costomers take 10g snuff daily.

Ii was in Holland twice in the mid 1990s, rotterdam and amsterdam and train rides in between… saw one person in a restaurant doing snuff, I know it was snuff now , cause he opened it from a tin… I thought it was something else… . Just a thought … But it’s probably quite prevalent in the red light district ( in the coffee shops or coffeeshops ) And the Vicinity along the canal, only because of the liberal atmosphere…

I live in the USA ,I use snuff ,that makes the USA a snuff-taking country. Tobacco came from America, I never seen anyone using tobacco snuff that I had not introduced snuff to. I also smoke a pipe and only seen less that a hand full of tobacco pipe users in my life time. Most has to do with availability and marketing or lack of and not about the product it self. Insufflating is commonly associated with drug use. Even most folks [current tobacco users] I offer it to decline, because of the habitual abuse of illegal substances of their past, fearing a relapse. It a shame snuff is a well kept secret, only us snuff users understand the benefits and enjoyment of. Most Snuff has a burn or in the case of american snuff throat and lung hit ,so if some novice did try snuff without knowledge of how to use it they would shy away. Feel fortunate that snuff has crossed your path and you get to enjoy this pleasure. Snuff originally gained popularity by some queen using it, So if some public figure today, Actor, Athlete ,Musician, Racecar driver, well liked politician were seen using snuff the brain washed public demand for snuff would drive the prices of snuff out of reach. So shout it from the roof tops how wonderful snuff is; but I warn you, it your own nose you will be cutting off.

I’ll snuff to that @basement_shaman Funny, today I met two smoking friends while out for a cycle. They got their tin of RYO out and made a few smokes and I got out my bullet for a snuff and no-one mentioned anything about what the other was doing. I’ve never encountered another snuff user here and it bothers me not in the slightest. I am special. B-)

Flying under the radar doesn’t bother me a bit! If snuff becomes too popular, the government will start taxing the crap out of it just like they have with all of the other tobacco products!

In the US, I have never met or witnessed another person taking nasal snuff. In fact I’m not absolutely sure all of you are real. ;))

Exactly @howdydave. I don’t want them taxing snuff like they do cigs. Also, I like not following the crowd and cigs are horrible once you switch on to snuff. Best to keep snuff under the radar imo.

Although ā€˜flying under the Radar’ may have its advantages in terms of fears about increased taxes. I would really like to see snuff making a major come back in terms of wider Public use. This would lead to more manufacturers, more veriety & more online retailers all of which would be welcome.

I like it how things are except that Mr Snuff keeps running out of all the popular stuff and I can barely keep up with whats out there at the moment anyway. We’ve got loads of good mass producers and a few great smaller one’s just getting into their perfect stride. If snuff usage increased drastically I think we’d just end up with a load of corporate cowboys jumping in and blanding the whole thing away and stuffing their chemicals in wherever possible etc. No. these are the good times, the good old days, now. I heard on the radio the other day, a pub landlord talking about having introduced snuff when the smoking ban in pubs came in and seems it went down well with the customers. I can’t afford to frequent such places these days but I was surprised that not more or all pubs intorduced even a few snuffs when the ban came in. When last in my local listed building pub which used to be famous for the maybe 100 or more years of nicotine stained ceiling I brought my snuff and a lot of people tried and seemed to be aware of snuff but none considering taking up the habit while sucking strenuously on their fags (no not those fags for our US viewers) in the cold outside smoking area.

It is quite common round here, as in I have seen at least half a dozen other users and more than a dozen ā€œnonā€ users have accepted a pinch if offered, and everybody knew what it was. I’m in an ex pit village though in Derbyshire so I’m probably one of the lucky few. Stefan

@Walrus1985 I’d imagine mining communities would be the exception to the norm, and it makes sense (to me at least) to see more snuff used in those boozers. Never thought of it till you mentioned it though

Snuff use is real big in India , though the traditional method of sniffing has given way to its use as a dentifrice. 80-90% of the snuff is used as a dentifrice in India. There are a lot of companies producing snuff may be close to 100 or even more though no big corporate houses are involved. Outside of India , Tibet, Mongolia and some south African countries also use snuff big time in the traditional way through the nose.

The only person I have seen using snuff is the guy in the local tobacconist. He says that he does sell quite a lot to his regulars, though, in the east midlands of the UK, an ex-mining area. There was a. craze among students, a few years ago, for menthols, as well.

I tried tooth-rubbing today with WE. I definitely prefer nasal use, I could scarcely taste it, it was like rubbing sand or something on my gums. Maybe my method was wrong though, I just put a couple pinches on my palm, wetted my index finger, got some snuff on it and rubbed it around.
