I like to add fresh peppers to my meals and I use Tabasco a lot in drinks and dishes. Does anyone know of a snuff that has a good peppery flavour? I was thinking about adding some drops of Tabasco to a plain snuff and so make one myself, but I’m a little anxious about the result. Would this be a possibility you think?

Personally I’d see one or two problems here. The agent that makes a pepper hot is capsaicin and it’s oil based. Knowing what anything between a habanero and a Carolina reaper does to my tastebuds, throat and stomach, I’m not sure I’d want that in my nose. Tabasco as a Louisiana type of hot sauce is also very heavy on the vinegar so I don’t know if that’s a good idea with snuff. a personal favourite snuff of mine is firedrac. not exactly heavy on the spice, but always worth a try.

Ancho is about the mildest chile out there that might work. Dried NuMex/Anaheim and the like would be possible choices. You’d need to mill/grind to a flour like powder and proceed with extreme caution. As Kiwi78 said it’s the capsaicin oils that will rip your sensitive areas to shreds. Ancho is a ripe dried Poblano and is very low in capsaicin, but still could hurt if overdone. I’d try it with chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon to reflect the old Aztec Xocolatl, the forebear of hot chocolate, but unsweetened and bitter as hell. I’d add a sweetener, piloncillo raw Mexican sugar if you’re interested in historic accuracy. It didn’t do o’ Montezuma any damn good. I’d also use a pretty stout snuff flour as the base…too fine and it’s all over. RIP.

Yes, there is (quite much) vinegar in Tabasco. But would that be a problem? Most snuff sauces are humid aren’t they? I think the liquid form of pepper sauce would be easier to mix with snuff as the ground form of pepper. Which will be much stronger as well. I don’t think the capsacin would not be a problem to me as an experienced pepper user. For instance when I fancy a snack in the evening I eat a raw red pepper. Delicious! But maybe I should first give it a try with the Green Tabasco, the milder form which is made of jalapeno peppers. I read somewhere else on this forum a message from 2008 saying that Tabasco is a good way to re-hydrate dry snuff. So it seems to be possible. The users speaking about that are long not active anymore on this site so I can’t ask them but they said “It seems bring the tobacco taste in snuff more to the front” so I’m curious. I think I’m going to try some Tabasco in a pot of half loaded Latakia AO1860 Snuff I still have around for nearly two years and “revive” it by some drops of Tabasco. Guess the smoky properties of Latakia will combine well with Tabasco. Thanks @Kiwi78 for the link to the Dragun snuff, but did you see the warning at the bottom of the page about own risk and small pinches to start with… curious if my experiment needs a warning too…

I think that depends on your personal preferences…talking scoville units here. Regular Tabasco isn’t hot at all in my books and maybe you get away with it. I’m not even going to mention extracts. PS: for the casual reader, the supermarket habanero has about 100,000 scovilles, the famous Ghost Pepper or Bhut Jolokia is somewhere in the 1 million range while the current Guinness world record holder, the Carolina reaper, clocks in at roughly 2 million. Extract can be in the range of 16 million and is a health risk.

Tomorrow I’m going to experiment and sacrifice my half tube of Latakia to it! Will report the result. The abraxas snuff mentioned is a little too expensive for me now, and why not make something myself?

Today I tried, with the Latakia Snuff. Just digged a hole with a teaspoon in the snuff and dropped Tabasco in it. Covered it with snuff and I am leaving it for a day and then look.

I like tobasco in terms of flavour and don’t find it very hot. It has been oak barrel age’d I thnk which produces the flavour. It is piquant like Latakia so @Salmaik you could well be onto something. Hope it works as I may try it myself.

Haha I love it but I love really hot foods generally, I eat raw habanero peppers. It is definitely very painful. I’m saving the rest of my tub for winter.

I left the Latakia with Tabasco for 2 days. When I now open the tube there is a nice smell of vinegar. Not peppery at all. Stired it a bit and tried a pinch. It isn’t hot at all. The snuff increased in moistness and softness. Not peppery but the result of my experiment is not bad at all. Don’t have to throw the tube with snuff away. Can recommend this if you want to make your snuff more moist.
