I tried a small sample of Honest Plain snuff a few years ago, but since have used a lot of WE Garrett, 3 Thistle, Square, and RR Mills. If I had to choose two of these four, it would be WE Garrett and RR Mills; I’d miss the Square more than the 3 Thistle. Given this, would it be ‘worth it’ to revisit the Honest plain snuff, or do you think I’d find it too mild and boring compared to the others I’ve been using ?
For honest and plain you can’t beat SG Black Rappee, or a toast like Wilsons #22.
Honest is the brand. I’d never heard of it until I came across it in a store in the US. I like it but don’t have enough experience really to compare it against the other scotches. Plus I’m crap at taking them
It definitely has a flavor that is different from Garrett. I don’t know that I’d call it plain though. Given that you are so fond of Garrett, I’d give Honest another go.
I would definately revisit Honest. I bought 3 Scotches (Square, Superior, and Dental) a few months ago and quickly shelved them because I didn’t like them. I couldn’t taste/smell anything but SMOKE, and not in a good way. I was snuffing the Superior just to make my very limited supply of HDT and Royal George last a bit longer but I didn’t really care for it. I then decided, just a couple weeks ago, to revisit Dental and wow was I ever surprised. I also discovered that the method of delivery also made a difference, at least to my nose. Pinching seemed to make it feel less harsh. I still get a lovely burn (I like the burn) and an almost toasted, woodsmoke taste/smell. I don’t get any of the barbeque sauce that many speak of. I have since been snuffing Dental almost to the exclusion of HDT and RG. I still like a snoot of HDT first thing of the day with a cup of coffee and a snoot of RG before bed, but it’s been, and enjoyably I might add, Dental all day every day. In fact I’m enjoying some right now. Definately try Honest again.
I rotated through several different snuffs but in the end my go-to became any kind of plain or scotch…I LOVE the smokiness and the burn…
I like Honest, but I don’t find it significantly different from Garrett to warant seeking out. Garrett I can find locally, plus I have 2 jars in the cellar and then some. To vary my scotches more, I take a handful from Swisher (Square, Three Thistle, Superior, Starr) and Rooster or Standard (if I can get them) from US Smokeless and that satisfies my need for variety in rotation. Once each scotch has been sampled and the similarites and differences identifed, one can find all they need in a few favorites.
I have used almost all the American Scotches, and my favorite is Navy Plain followed by RR Mills Plain. Honest is a little softer and quite a bit smokier than those two. It is softer and a little less smokey than Square. By softer, I mean it is easier on the nose, ie probably less alkaline. I find a certain alkalinity and burn prevents the finely ground Scotches from clogging so badly by promoting drainage. eg: Three Thistles Strong is on the high end of “hard” and less smokey than Square or Honest.
