Hello everyone. This is my first post on this site. I have recently become very interested in snuff but cant buy it here in Finland. (Its banned) So i make my own. I take my favourite kind of pipe tobacco of the brand Clan and leave it to dry. When it is dry i put it in a blender and turn it to fine dust. Then it is ready for use. I have found i enjoy this homemade snuff of mine very much. I actually enjoy it more than cigarettes to which i have been addicted for 9 years. I still smoke but i have cut down from two packs a day to ten cigarettes or less per day. Does anyone else here make their own snuff?
Some of the guys on here have gone from homebrew to manufacturer. It’s kinda scary. The only batch I have made so far stinks like slightly minty earth and the moisture is completely wrong. I’m glad yours turned out so much better since you can’t get others. Why in the hell did they ban snuff?
I dont know why they banned snuff but they did. What kind of tobacco did you use when you made your snuff Dogwalla? I can recommend Kilta pipe tobacco or Clan pipe tobacco. Dont know if you can get Kilta where you live though since it is a finnish pipe tobacco.
More and more folks are creating their own blends and testing out new idea’s based off of interest or banning. I find it very interesting and helps others on the approach to change things to improve or satisfy our quest for a perfect snuff. Keep us updated
I made a snuff out of cigars today. I took a pack of 20 café creme cigars (small ones) and put them in the blender. When it was done i scented the snuff with cinnamon. It turned out real nice. And it has quite the kick to it as well.
I talked about grinding cigars before and still like the idea. The only problem I am having is that I love my cigars and they cost a lot more than my snuff right now. Hearing your adventure might make me try this
Yes the cigars cost a bit. I paid over eleven euros for the pack of 20 cafe cremé cigars. But it makes good snuff. And a decent amount as well. There are of course many, many different cigar brands and flavours but odds are if you have a cigar brand that you enjoy, you will enjoy it in snuff form as well.
I am slowly working on flavors for my snuff but only natural in powdered form or dryed and ready to grind.
Do you have any tips on flavouring and where to get it? All i have is cinnamon.
@snuffdude you may want to check your laws more closely unless this is a new development. We’ve had quite a few members from Finland in the past and they’ve all had no trouble getting snuff. Swedish Snus I know is banned there, but nasal snuff is not to my knowledge.
Really? I havent seen nasal snuff for sale anywhere so i just assumed it was banned just like swedish snus. Do you know of any places that do sell it? No stores i have been in have it.
Buying snuff online is the only option since they dont sell snuff in finnish stores. If snuff indeed is legal to sell and buy in Finland why cant you buy it anywhere? Could be that snuff just is not that popular in Finland. Thank you for the links cstokes4. I will check them out. Swedish snus is however legal to posess and use, but you cant sell it or buy it in Finland. Most of my friends who do use it buy it when they are in sweden and bring back some when they come home.
Snuff is legal in the US… yet it is nowhere to be found.
Isnt that weird? Surely it cant be so unpopular that no store carries it? Well, luckily we can make our own snuff like i did. Im sitting here enjoying some of my homemade snuff right now.
Not really, just an effective marketing campaign by big tobbaco.
I like the low profile that it carries and believe that they are making gains just not loudly. If you want to talk about strange, look at why cigars are okay There are plenty of places in Maryland that carry snuff (Thank You Tobacco God)
There are plenty of places in Maryland that carry snuff
That’s true, but most of that - probably like 90% - is consumed orally. Nasal use is not that popular worldwide. I’m not sure I blame it all on big tobacco, but they do what they can to maintain the status quo. A few pockets of places have decent selections: England, Switzerland, Germany, Poland and of course India, but even in these regions it seems there are simply some fertile oases among deserts. Anyway, @snuffdude most of us buy most or all of our snuff online as its usually the only option.
I’ve always thought that ground up navy flake would make a nice snuff. It’s what I would use if I couldn’t get snuff online. The scent of rum with Virginia tobaccos and a hint of Perique. I’ve always thought it was never in the interest of big tobacco in the past to market snuff because you don’t use the same quantity of snuff as you do with other tobaccos. The last thing I would of wanted if I was them, is to promote low quantity use of my product.
yes i make my own snuff. Right now i have 20 different single scented snuffs. If i mix them i will have too many different snuff types. I tried to mix some of them and i found a perfume very similar to f&t moucuba.
Last year was going to be the year I made quite a bit of snuff/chew from some homegrown burley. I purchased 200 plants for about $8.oo ,gave more than half away and only set 75 or so. I was so late getting them in, they were in the field too long and with the alternating rains and my lack of attention, they started to get black mold. I handpicked what I could, a heaping wheelbarrow full, but not enough as I had hoped. I like this type of topic because I have so much to learn. The true way to knowledge is to put on a brown jumpsuit and go on top the windmills with Jaap. I believe a person could learn more from him in person than years of experimentation/failure on his own…FIELDTRIP!!!
Currently I can get SD and Toque locally. The only ‘real’ tobacco store (not discount cig shop) is inside a gas station. Daniel orders an awesome selection of tobaccos, and will get in whatever you want. He does it all out of two glass cases and the space of about two Skoal racks. If he ever kills his part of that operation I’m screwed. Cigs, dip, and nasty cigars will be just about it. The rest of the ‘tobacco shops’ consist of $3.00 off pack price for a carton and a large selection of cheap beer. My DIY snuff is nasty. So, so nasty.
what about regulating the ph? Which subtances increase it to level 9.5-10?
@linguist a ph level that high will burn your nose. I use sodium carbonate to increase alkalinity and some times also add a little ash. I would like to try using ammonium chloride (salmiak) one of these days.
@Juxtaposer are you sure about this because i learned that sodium carbonate ph is 10,5 and also gletcherprise is very close to 10. Regardind to salmiac, i am looking for dutch drop especially zout and double zout everywhere but it looks like there is none in my country.
Looking for a ph level for sodium carbonate and found this: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/bases-ph-d\\_402.html
I don’t remember seeing Gletcherprise in the list I saw, but I don’t remember any listed being higher than about 8.5pH. There are a few alkaline waters (~8.5pH) on the market in the US, my next experiment is to moisten/hydrate my homemade snuff with that, rather than buffering with Baking Soda.
I’m not going to try snuffing soda ash straight to be sure if it won’t burn. I only add up to two percent to my snuffs and that is a lot. Good luck experimenting, just don’t hurt yourself.
@puffpuff you are right gletcherprise is around 8ph according to http://www.smokeless.org.nz/nasalsnuff\\_analyses.htm hedges is above 10.
Wow, 10 seems really high to me, but I never measured it myself. I’ll take Swedish Match’s word for it. That’s probably why the need all that menthol – so you don’t feel the burn!
I just took a look at a pH level scale 1 to 14 http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/184ph.html and now a level of 10 does not seem as high as the 1 to 10 scale which I was imagining.
Yikes! I just popped open my obviously active (top sucked on) Honey Burley to check for mold and could not help but take a pinch and boy did it burn (tears rolling). I suppose letting it air out might help but I may have to mix this stuff with something else. I’m leaving it alone for now though. Too much sodium carbonate? I’d say so.
i don’t use mortar nor sieve anymore. This thing is amazingly works. I can apply full body pressure.
i use back of the hand method since snuffhouse.org snuffbox allows this method by adjustable tap. Toque irritated my hand (it is red and i feel the burn) i think this means toque has a high ph volue.
Dried Perique, ground and sifted. A.S. makes a good natural perique blend, very strong snuff. I could see where some soda and possibly brown sugar wet mix, used then dried would help to better preserve and balance. And who ever argued mom’s rolling pin? Homemade’s been fun, Something about those pro’s though. @linguist, you definitely seam to have your methods down, my hat’s off to you Sir.
i put my super fine homemade plain snuff in a little bee-milk jar. I thought it was clear enough because i have rinsed it but now my snuff smells like honey.
It sounds tasty! However, Bee milk is liquid wax, isn’t it? That might stay a while in the nose and prevent you from smelling anything else.
wax? I don’t know. I give it to my baby as babyfood once a day. There was no residue in the jar but the scent.

sodium bicarbonate is probably the safest
http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927258 Hold steady your measurements matey’s sodium bicarbonate MSDS @Xander, your opinion on salt? I’ve been finding pickling salt vs iodized and still researching. Any experience with these, any other SH members insights? Thanks everybody :-B
I said sodium bicarbonate since its baking soda, i.e. edible. Of course it needs to be used cautiously, as speeding nicotine uptake too much (freebasing) will make you feel sick. I never tried anything that needed salt, but I’d guess non-iodized or Kosher table salt would be safest. Any salt will prevent mold and act as preservative. Not sure if iodine would have negative impact or not. Some other salts are edible, some are not. Research and experiment, and wait for more experienced hom millers to weigh in. I’ve got some epsom salts I use in gardening and also sometimes for bathing. I might check on how safe they are to consume or to have membrane contact with.
This is what that link says… “Sodium carbonate is usually not very toxic. However, if you swallow very large amounts, you may have symptoms. In this rare situation, long-term effects, even death, are possible if you do not receive quick and aggressive treatment.” So don’t swallow very large amounts! I use netti pot salt for my snuffs. Using non-iodized salt for some reason was important.

Yes, looked up the ingredients of “Feinst” by Bernard and Calcium Hydroxide was on the list. Not sure how this could be the most natural/healthy snuff?
Calcium Hydroxide is used in netty pots, also in nasal sprays, everything in application, reasons to have correct measurements and proper method of application.
I will make snuff from pipe tobacco that got accidentally dried out (It happens here in the desert) but only enough to use in a week or less, that way I don’t really worry about mold. To the OP if you put a drop of essential oil on a cotton ball in an airtight container with your snuff for a day or two, that should give an aroma to your finished product.
^yes it will
I am at this moment in the process of grinding up some dried pipe tobacco. I am using my fingers so it will be a coarser consistency but it’s easier than you’d think because it was dry when I bought it and this is the last of the pouch so most of it is already very finely ground. I plan on rehydrating it before I snuff it though. I will post again with my thoughts on the finished “product”.
I am experimenting w/ making Perique snuff. Re: sodium bicarb, is there a ratio that is used when adding to snuff? From what I’ve read in this post, it seems to be used to add ph, or boost nicotine levels. How much is too much?
I have used about 1.5% by weight compared to dry (pre-moistened) tobacco weight. I would think that somewhere between 0.5 - 2% should be a safe range. So 100g of dry tobacco gets about 1.5g sodium bicarbonate. When I did it, I started with ‘raw’ air-cured tobacco, so I added the sodium bicarbonate to the water that I used to moisten the tobacco prior to cooking. Can’t say for sure that it’s the right way, but it did work that way for me. Note: The sodium bicarbonate doesn’t change the nicotine levels. It changes how ‘bio-available’ the nicotine is. It improves your body’s ability to absorb the nicotine that’s there. So the nicotine reaches your system faster, and that gives the perception of ‘more’ nicotine.
Bi-Carbonate is a poor choice! Sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda, soda ash and soda crystals), Na2CO3 is what you want. I got a lifetime supply for 4 bucks, Arm and Hammer Washing soda is 100% Sodium carbonate, nothing else.
Start with 2% as mentioned, it takes very little, but it must be in there to make snuff.
I say do some math and add it to the snuff by volume.
