im sick of it. i moistend my homemade snuff like it said to on the site and now its too clumpy its falling out of my nose in clumps. nothing i try to do to get it to dry is working. it stays clumpy and im thinking it has so little nicotine its its almost non exsistant. i really hope i can get enough money out of my next check to buy some real snuff.
Don’t give up just yet, this is an easy fix. The trick is to sieve it after you have moistened it. Try to find a sieve with a slightly larger hole size for this, as the grains swell somewhat when the snuff is moistened. You may have to force it through the mesh with your fingers. If it’s too moist and clumpy to pass through, you need to dry it more. Spread it out thinly on a piece of paper, and break apart the large clumps as they begin to dry. You will find that you have some parts that are dry, and some parts that are still too moist. The trick is to put the snuff back into an airtight container and leave it somewhere warm overnight. This will even out the moisture. The moisture from the too-moist parts will be absorbed by the too-dry parts until the moisture level is even throughout the snuff. Once this has happened, sift it again, and you will have nice fluffy snuff If you still find that the nicotine is too low, you can try alkalysing it. Many people do this by making a ‘sauce’ of water and sodium carbonate (washing soda). You need about 1% by weight, maybe 2%. I don’t add it as a sauce, I grind it up with a mortar and pestle and sieve it, then mix it in with the already-moistened snuff by repeatedly sifting it. I then let it sit overnight to homogenize.
see i left it out all night to dry out because i want to grind it as fine as possible if i try to grind it usingit how it is it will just stick to the inside of the coffee grinder i put a littl on my finger and when i blow on it it flies of in clumps insteaad of as a powder. i want it dry and as fine as i can get it so i can get as much nicotine as i can i usually dont like my snuff like that but its the only way i think i can get any nicotine out of it. its already been process it just RYO tobacco which i understand may not have that much incotine but this just leaves me craving more. so i take too much snuff and i make mess of it. a lot of it collects around the inside of the entrance of my nostrils
@jeffcraft1 The RYO tobacco might by the issue. RYO, and all tobacco processed for cigs. is acidic. While Pipe and cigar tobacco is not (most of use don’t) inhale. The tobacco is alkaline. I would guess the snuff is alkaline as well. Simply put the cig. tobacco process is designed to make the smoke more easily inhaled and I would guess that this would change it at least a little making the nic hit far less then normal snuff. Someone that actually knows if snuff is acidic or alkaline might help clarify maybe @chefdaniel? Don’t want to put you on the spot but now that I am thinking about it I would like to know too.
its also too moist i left it open for 8 hours last night and i didnt dry out at all so i couldent grind it any more
You can find pH meters on ebay, but if you don’t use it often you’re better off with litmus paper. If you have a local vendor they are cheap, or you can see if the high school or jr college chemistry departments still use them and make a deal. Or you can take a look at this site: http://www.xump.com/Science/Blue-Litmus-Paper.cfm Distilled water is 7.0 so for snuff you’re looking at a range of 7.5-9.5; any higher and the snuff gets harsh, any lower and the nicotine isn’t as available for absorption.
ok that makes sense the only reason i had to make it is because i ran out before i had the money to buy more im hoping i make enough this time to buy some
RYO tobacco works fine for snuff. I think it is already treated with alkalysing chemicals, so don’t add any more! Because some of the components of the blend are toasted, I find it works best as a dry Scotch-type snuff. If it’s moist, it just tastes like a damp ashtray. You need to get it absolutely bone dry and grind it fine. Spread it out as much as possible, and leave it somewhere warm to dry. It should be so dry and crispy that you can easily crumble it to dust between your fingers. Once it is dry and ground, add a little salt (3 to 5%) and grind it in. Don’t try to moisten it, just use it as it is. You will get plenty of nicotine. I just used some of my own today, made from ‘The Good Stuff’ RYO tobacco and a little salt, and it made me spin out a little from the nicotine.
getting it fine has been a serious problem for me im using a coffee grinder and for some reason its not grinding it that fine even though it ground the salt i mixed in to this batch to something like a talc powder. i have no idea why its like that
Salt is dry and hard, so it pulverizes easily. If tobacco is even slightly too moist, it is flexible and springy and won’t break apart easily. Imagine trying to break a rock with a hammer. That’s the salt. Now imagine trying to break a rubber ball with a hammer. That’s the moist tobacco. It needs to be absolutely crispy dry before you will have any luck grinding it. Even then, there will be some parts that won’t grind well. Sieve that out and dry it further, then try again. I’m considering buying a food dehydrator to solve this same problem.
ahh ive got mine toasting a bit to take out the moisture i like it ore toasted than what it was originally
occurs to me your ryo tobacco may have a humectant that keeps it pliable, pg is commonly used for that purpose. I think American Spirit rolling tobacco is additive-free.
That should work fine. It will grind pretty easily once it’s crispy.
it burnt so i mixed itwith a few other things if i could get latakia tobacco i could make something better quality if i could ever figure out how to do it
update: i forgot about a tin of mint that i had put into a 50g empty can of F&T kendal brown id dried out nicely and is imparted with background note of KB. its actually pretty decent it still smells strongly of mint. id be willing to send a sample if one wants one its not the best but i think i did good on this one
