This little beauty grinds some serious snuff: http://www.amazon.com/Blendtec-52-601-BHM-Kitchen-60-Ounce-Electric/dp/B002LLOKBG

It’s too easy. Make snuff with feelings! Give it a soul!

I’d rather give it Seoul. Making a Kimchi snuff sounds good.

I really recommend a ball mill. You can find them for sale for polishing gem stones, maybe they call 'em a rock tumbler or something. You get a very fine grind if you want, without much heat. They seem to treat tobacco more gently than grinders.

Just agreed with the ball mill idea on the other thread. Perfect grind, doesn’t heat the tobacco, and requires no manual labor :smiley:

Any leads on a cheap ball mill? I did a quick search earlier but they seem very expensive - much more so than the blender @chefdaniel linked. I did find some DIY instructions but I don’t think I want to use something that I’ve cobbled together for fear of personal injury :-B

Harbor freight rock tumbler, $40 or so. I got mine for $30 with a 25% coupon. Harbor freight ALWAYS has a coupon available if you look for it. I use a length of chain instead of balls (actually I have 100 ball bearings too, but they don’t seem to add much except weight). If you use chain, do NOT use gavanized stuff- zinc dust in your snuff is not a good idea! I bought ‘shot blasted’ chain, which has no plating or paint etc, just plain steel.

Thanks @doctorbeat. No Harbor Freights up here but I should be able to find a rock tumbler somewhere for cheaper than ball mills.

I’d recommend that you stay away from the toy rock tumblers. I looked at those and they don’t look like they would last very long. I imagine rock tumblers are the kind of thing that many people will use once or twice and then get bored and put it in a closet. This may mean that used ones are available for little money. Go with one with a rubber drum if possible, because they are much quieter.

I stole mine flour mill from my wife. Now she can’t make flour and cornmeal. She’s pissed.

@chefdaniel LOL :))

I’m a cheap old bas%$#d so I stole my mill. Now I want a ball mill.

I’ve done fine with a krups blade grinder and a sieve. YMMV.

Zinc in nasal snuff…Don’t they call that a cold remedy? lol. “cold-eze”

Found all of this rather interesting, I might have to order…

Yes, zinc in nasal sprays was used as a cold remedy. Worked too, it seems. Problem was, it made people anosmic (lost their sense of smell), some permanently, and one brand, Zicam was sued as a result: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zicam

Since so many producers have mastered the technique, I wouldn’t waste my time and effort in order to produce a definately INFERIOR product.

@howdydave‌, Nigel of Abraxas said he started off as an amateur trying to make the snuff he wanted to take himself. He seems to be getting the hang of it. Most people’s first few batches will br lousy, but persistence and experimentation do seem to result in improvements.

@howdydave INFERIOR? According to you? You are truly a legend in your own mind. Yes I’ve seen your “website”. Once. Johnny, Nigel and Roderick may or may not have done an apprenticeship in one of the big mills, but they damn sure mastered the technique. And they are all gentlemen that can definitely spell. If you’ve been paying attention, you might notice that tobacco continues to be under attack; ALL forms of tobacco. The PACT Act came close to ruining life for US snuff enthusiasts. Gone are the days when a call to Mike at Mars resulted in a few pounds of snuff arriving at your door quickly, cheaply and easily; with very low taxes. Now we have to jump through hoops ordering from overseas with high prices, high shipping costs and customs hassles. Hell, some countries can’t even import tobacco of any kind due to government monopoly and/or anti-tobacco nazis. If this trend continues, and it most likely will, it will be a valuable skill to know one’s way around the leaf in all its forms. Making snuff is only one of them. I can make a superior snuff to many, if not most that are available. Obvious exceptions are Abraxas, Sir Walter Scott and Toque. Nothing against the big boys in Kendal, Sheffield and elsewhere. And I can make it for a lot less money, no taxes and no hassles.

Just finished a home - Dominican Ligero Leaf, by way of a tweaked Juxtaposed recipe. I like mine dry and chunky (though fine is also beautiful). It turned out great w/ high burnt chocolate hints and a noticeable hint of musk (or light cat piss depending on your nose). As a fan of acrid/cat piss flavours, I am liking this much.
