Good day to all \m/ I need a recipe to make a snuff with high ammonia concentrate, I’m using raw tobacco leaves that I buy from local farmers. Here is my method. 100g of finely crushed and screened tobacco flour. 2g of slaked lime. 2g of salt. 100ml of distilled water. I mix the slaked lime and salt with water And ad the mixture to my tobacco powder. I get the ammonia smell with my method but it disappears almost instantly. What am I doing wrong, can anyone explain the procedure, the ratio of ingredients, how to cure the snuff and preserve the ammonia?
How long are you letting the mixture sit?
Ammonia has a boiling point of -33°C (-28°F). As soon as you lift the lid and expose the snuff to normal atmospheric conditions the ammonia should evaporate.
I’m new to the snuff making hobby, but I love snuff with high levels of ammonia, I have 4 different batches of snuff standing in a low heat incubator three days now, am I to impatient? @horus92
@FaapOaid do you know Ntsu snuff? Its One of my favorite, I love the buzzz, its full of lovely ammonia and It doesn’t loose the ammonia kick when I lift the lid, maybe I sniff my tin to fast for the ammonia to evaporate?
@Celsen No, i do not know Ntsu. In fact i do not know any snuff that smells of ammonia for a prolonged period.
@FaapOaid Ntsu has kick like no other snuff I know It smells like cat piss but I love the buzz lol, you should try some, where you from?
@Celsen Even though ammonia has a lot of “kick” in itself you might still feel an enjoyable kick if you let it air for a bit to get rid of the ammonia. Try it out with a small portion of snuff. I am from Sweden and from your description i doubt i will like it to be honest, strong kicks aren’t really my cup of tea. Anyways, if you want more ammonia you could always try to increase the amount of calcium hydroxide or maybe switch to sodium carbonate (i assume they are meant to accomplish the same thing?). Personally i have always used sodium carbonate for both my snuff and snus.
You should let homemade snuff mature for at least 3 weeks not 3 days.
@Celsen First: welcome to this nice forum, it seems you quite new. Second: Congratz to your hobby of snuff-making. I would love to try this myself. Third: I am TOTALLY on your (the ammonia) side !!! I love NTSU as well and same goes for nearly all the other S.A. snuffs since they nearly all come with a fair punch of ammonia !!! Howdy to that !
@Prismaster I’m from South Africa so Ntsu was my first sniff of tobacco, loved It since the first sniff.
