History of Toque

I asked Roderick about the history of Toque and here was his reply: Hi Jordan, There sadly isn’t any great Toque Snuff history like Wilsons or Gawiths. My first introduction to snuff was as a teenager when I Pinched (excuse the pun) a masters snuff tin. I still feel sick when I remember back to that day and the pain in my throat from swallowing burning snuff when a friend and I tried to smoke it. I don’t know who was more stupid the master for forgetting his snuff tin or me for trying to smoke it. I was again exposed to snuff as a student, quite a few undergraduates used to take it at society dinners’, however by then I was a committed smoker. Having smoked my way through the 80’s and first half of the 90’s it wasn’t until I met my wife (a cancer research scientist) that I stopped smoking with the aid of snuff. I have worked most of my life in the wine trade and trained as an oenologist (wine scientist) finally becoming a fine wine broker in 1991. Working in the wine trade your olfactory senses become highly developed which I have found of great benefit in the snuff business. My first attempt at making snuff was when an American friend of mine found he could not find his beloved chewing tobacco in the UK and we started grinding our own snuff on an industrial coffee grinder, which we still use today; it was a fascinating way to learn and an early start but it was purely a hobby. I had always maintained an interest in snuff and when I heard of the proposed smoking ban for the UK I thought it might be the right time for a snuff resurgence. That thought led to the creation of Toque Tobacco Ltd. Toque was launched in 2006 and the website in early 2007. Toque is the first new snuff company in the UK in 102 years. We currently only make 37 snuffs for ourselves and 10 for other people, 47 in total and are a very small company, although I believe Wilsons has 7-8 employees and Gawiths 6-7, we only have 4 employees including me and the cleaning lady. Fortunately, we have a very large Georgian House that has been built on a warren of old wine cellars, now our small factory and the house study has become the company office. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I very rarely go on facebook, and sorry our history isn’t as colourful as the more traditional snuff firms.

Aha, now we know who makes Jaxons!!!

I am intrested to know about these “other” 10!

I’ve often thought about starting a U.S. snuff company in the same manner. I’ve been experimenting around with making my own for about a year now and am getting somewhat close to snuff I would certainly not be ashamed to have other people snuffing. I’m still not 100% to where I have a a few batches to the point of satisfaction where I will come on here and say 10g samples for whoever provides me an address but I will…and stress WILL come to that point in the coming months. I have found a passion and anyone who knows me will tell you when I have a passion, I am tenacious and obsessive. The only things scaring me off of going into an LLC is capital, FDA crap, and regulatory stuff. Not to say that if I could join forces with other like minded individuals I wouldn’t put this idea into the attempt phase.

ANy other PA Snuffers out there wanna combine efforts and start “Keystone Snuff Inc.”?

Also Roderick, a former oenologist? O.k…it is official. You ARE my hero. A background in fine wines and in snuff. Brava!

hmmm, McChrystal’s Raspberry and Apricot are damn similar in scent to the Toque versions. So what are the other 8?

@ the Nose Knows: please buy and renovate the old Garrett snuff mill, just over the line from PA here in DE. It would be cool to put it operation again, something ala what the deKralingse mills do (except with a water mill).

Here in Wilmington. Pop is about 100,000 (250,00 more in suburbs) Also Philadephia is less than 20 miles. Their population is in the millions–huge city. More importantly, The location of the mill is very close to some international attractions of the historic Brandywine valley (Du Pont company). Longwood Gardens is the closest and most notable attraction. check wikipedia entries on Brandywine Creek, Longwood Gardens, Winterthur. It certainly could work if it had the right financial backing.

Xander…you know what? That would be a great way to go. I wish I could come up with the massive capital needed to purchase and restore that. I know exactly where the mills is I visited it twice during my one of my several Civil War reenactments/living histories I participated in at Fort Mifflin in Philly. The money needed would be massive but it would be one hell of a start

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorklyn,\_Delaware There is a poor photo here. I have visited and posted some photos elsewhere on this website.

I have a piece of brick from that factory!!! Guess who gave it to me?

Arrrr I agree Maciej. You ok mate long time no see. Happy birthday for earlier this month btw. Stefan

lol yeah same here I thought that was a private message but obviously I’m wrong. Bloody pirates!

Roderick, How did you come up with the name?

From a fondness for hats I presume.

I must thank you Roderick, for providing me with a small world of exploration in snuffing. I bought a dusty tin of WoS at a local festival, and thought this could be good, and upon searching for nasal snuff I found your website to be quite modern compared to the others and ordered your sampler pack. I had issues with them at first (being a completely novice snuffer and never having seen anyone use it before) but I fell in love with the scents. I was never a smoker/snus’er/dipper but snuff is something I have really come to enjoy, and I do attribute a large amount of that to your blending abilities.

Rodericks products account for at least a quarter of my snuff collection and he makes one of my favorites, his peppermint! The main thing I admire in Toque snuffs is the accuracy and honesty in the naming. If it says peppermint on the tin, it will smell of peppermint!

@Xander: McC is made by WoS. I once thought that the Snuff Store brands were made by Toque, considering the grinds and the organic nature to Blenders Bundle. Also, once everything defrosts up there, you need to make a proper pictorial of the snuff mill.

@cstokes4: I’m pretty sure the Snuff Store brands are made by Samuel Gawith.
