From     The Morning Advertiser   10th December 1830.

                                            NEW COURT

(Before the Common Sergeant the Hon. Mr. Law and the Middlesex Jury.)

James White aged 23 years, was found guilty of stealing a snuff box, value 5s. from the person of Mr Henry Tozer.

On the prisoner being searched no less than six silk and four cotton handkerchiefs were found upon his person.

Mr Sergeant Arabin immediately sentenced the prisoner to be transported for life.

Harsh punishment indeed!  Any idea how much 5 shillings would equate to in today’s terms?
