From an English newspaper, Ludgate Circus,London 1897.

                        A  FAMOUS SNUFF SHOP

Another historic landmark of the last century is disappearing from view in the demolition of the corner shop in Ludgate Circus, in which was founded in Garrick’s time the business of John Hardman, the well-known vendor of tobacco and snuffs. It was at this establishment , to which all the celebrities of the day were accustomed to resort, that the celebrated   “No.37” snuff had its origin.  Various explanations have been given as to the precise significance

of the cognomen, the real fact probably being that the snuff was merely so called from the number attached to the drawer in which it was kept.
