SNUFF FACTORY CLOSES DOWN

Only One Left In Scotland.

A decline in the snuff habit is said to have been the cause of closing down of the old snuff mill on the Water of Leith just outside Edinburgh City Boundary, at Juniper Green.   The mill has been worked for over two hundred years but the snuff trade has been waning for some time, and orders have been scarce.

The smaller mill at the east end of Juniper Green, by the railway station is now said to be the only mill of its kind in Scotland.

A quick search on the web for Juniper Green Mills or Juniper Green Snuff Factory will reveal some interesting articles and old pictures.

One article tells how the waters from the river were taken upstream to supply Edinburgh and this had drastic consequences on the flow for the mills.  Pounds had to be constructed and regulated by the mill owners so that industry could continue.
