“A floral-scented snuff called “English Rose” is provided for members of the British House of Commons at public expense due to smoking in the House being banned since 1693. A famous silver communal snuff box kept at the entrance of the House was destroyed in an air raid during World War II with a replacement being subsequently presented to the House by Winston Churchill. Very few members are said to take snuff nowadays.” - From Wikipedia Are there any other historical snuffs that people know of. Also does anyone know the maker of this “English Rose” snuff that is referred to? Adds a bit of interest and history to my pinches
Fribourg & Treyer , frequently referred to as F&T here have quite a few historical Snuffs. Old Paris is the first one that comes to mind. Around since the days of Beau Brummell.
Gawith Hoggarth makes the English Rose that is supplied to the House of Commons. GH Kendal Brown is another historic snuff in that it has been produced for a LOOONG time.
SG Kendal Brown Original is the real Original Kendal Brown. Remeber GH was a breakaway company from SG. Also a fair number of WoS snuffs, particularly Best SP are steeped in tradition. Bernard has dates on many of their snuffs and the company goes back to the 1700s. Levi Garrett dates to 1782 if memory serves. This is not a new topic and a wealth of info is in the snuffhouse archives. Feel free to resurrect old threads.
