I am fairly new to snuff and these past days I have been compiling some suggestions for historical recreations that are scattered through the pages of this great forum. I thought it would be a good idea to share my list. I intend to try them in the coming months. These recipes are not mine. Thanks to all the great posters and researchers that came up with these. In recipes with the * symbol, the proportions are my guess. Princes Mixture* : Wilsons Princes 80% + Toque Rose 20% Café Royale : Tia Maria 50% + Gawith’s Black Coffee 50% Bordeaux (old style): Wilsons Princes 80% + Wilsons Tom Buck/Queen 20% Asthoroth *: De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 80% + Wilsons Jasmine 20% Spanish Jewel (components suggested by @Roderick): 50% Toque Spanish Gem 30% Toque Rustica 20% Toque Cheese and Bacon Alternative Spanish Jewel Indian Style *: 70% Toque Spanish Gem 20% Toque Cheese and Bacon 10% Dholakia Black
@chalimacos Welcome to Snuffhouse. Glad you could join us
Two more historical recipes taken from the book A Pinch of Snuff (1840): Grimstone’s Eye : scotch + aniseed. I guess “scotch” in the 1840 sense is not the same as USA scotchs, but something more like a plain SP. Tentative and untested recreation: Samuel Gawith No 1 70% + Samuel Gawith Aniseed 30% Violet Strasburg : rappee + bitter almonds + attar-gul + ambergris (modern day version: Sir Walter Scott’s Roslein)
A review of my first attempt at historical recreations or paleo-snuffology: This an attempt to replicate some of the mythical Spanish Jewel experience: 50% Toque Spanish Gem 30% ToqueUSA Whisky and Honey 20% Toque Cheese and Bacon The first sensation is pleasing burn full of nicotine. I guess it’s the fine-grined Whisky and Honey winning the race to the upper realms of the nose (it’s 50% rustica!). Then comes a fantastic honey and malt scent that lasts a few seconds and complements the nic hit perfectly. This first seconds are divine. Then the honey and malt slowly fade and give way to a musty and long lasting scent. I never sampled the original Spanish Jewel, but from reading reviews I think the sequence of scents was different. The sequence of the original Jewel was: Musty (initial seconds) -> Honey& Malt-brandy (lingering) This one is: Honey&Malt (initial seconds) -> Musty (lingering) So this blend might be a kind of inverse Spanish Jewel. Anyway it’s a real treat!
I’m shocked about the Cheese and, Bacon for Spanish Jewel. It seems like more people hate Cheese and, Bacon. I love the stuff. Great breakfast snuff to me.
Is the the rustic snuff in it for nic levels or flavor @chalimacos?
@Igglet For both. The formula not for the faint-hearted would be with 30% pure Rustica. My variation has 15% Rustica (Since Whiskey and Honey in its USA version is 50% Rustica). This lower Rustica makes possible to take pinches more often.
I tried the De Kralingse Latakia and the Wilsons Jasmine last week. (As an approximation of F&T Ashtoroth). It’s pretty close from what I can remember. Less silky, less black, but the smoky jasmine feels about right and took me back a few years! Thanks Chalimacos
I would suggest using real Latakia and going fifty fifty for Asthoroth.
Interesting and noted! Thanks
