Historical Limburgertabak revived

Stg. de Kralingse Snuif en Specerijen compagnie De Ster en De Lelie has again revived an historical snuff: Limburgertabak.

It is a fermented Virginia tobacco enriched with almond extract, orrisroot extract, majoram, basil, cubeb pepper and flavoured with lavender, rose and nutmeg.

Sounds wonderful. I was a little worried at first that it was scented with this:

@snuffmiller, is there any historical connection to the Limburgers who came to Rotterdam in the 19th century to dig out the peat (‘turfsteken’)?

@ Talljim: No worries. The microorganisms which take part in the fermentation of the tobacco are not Brevibacterium linens.

@ barredbenny: Although the lake next to the mills originates from the peat digging, I don’t think there is any connection since the recipe for this snuff comes from an German book on tobacco.

Is that bitter almond or sweet almond? Regardless, it sounds fantastic. Thank you for keeping this history alive. It’s nice to see snuff being created this way with no marketing pressure or competitive finagling.

eh…I’m a bit put off by the nutmeg…I can’t even smell that stuff without gagging…had a bad experience with it once…if you don’t understand, lets just say nutmeg can be used recreationally in large amounts…blech…

@Harlequin ah yeah, good ol nutmeg. I’m not much of a fan of it either.

If you need any any testers …

Second that!! That one sounds wonderful!! I can’t wait for the carotte to become available. Jaap, any timeframe on that??

@Juxtaposer: Thanks for your kind words. It’s sweet almond

@Harlequin and dakotas: Actually it is the blossom of nutmeg

@Talljim and furious: you are welcome

@furious: The St. Omer is delayed. The carotte snuff is pretty humid and we are on the way of stamping it dry which also depends on the weather. It has been very wet in Holland lately.

@snuffmiller Seriously it sounds fantastic. I’ll be placing an order next week!

Awesome great. Just throwing in the bon bon is awesome.

@bob I’ll add some to my order. Cheers.

it’s a strange one for sure. Very hard to discribe but great. It’s kinda sweet kinda herby kinda tobaccoy. It’s very tasty though.

Thank you all for the kind words an information

It sounds like a wonderful addition to your excellent snuff range, Jaap. You have revived a few old tobaccos and they are all quite delicious - I can’t wait to try this one.

Is it available in stores yet?

I eagerly await trying it, just wanted to say keep it up! You produce some real nice snuff, I’ve liked some of your other new offerings quite a bit- also especially the classic AP and Oranje, very nice!

Glad to see more traditional snuffs!  Thanks @snuffmiller!

I’ll agree with @bob that Bon Bon is one of my favorites.  @Filek :  It’s worth the trip!

Well, it has arrived, and what a belter it is. All the way through this medium grind, medium moist snuff smells of quality. The initial smell is of a warm tobacconists. That wonderful rich tobacco scent, heightened with a perfectly balanced sweet spice. It’s new in my nose and I’m sure it will reveal more, but the almond and lavender hit you first, then the fruitiness of the fermented tobacco mixed with the other scents grab you. Very moreish, I’ll have to order more soon, and in bulk because I know this isn’t going to last long (my wife loves it too, which will also eat into it!). What a remarkable snuff, and hats off to @snuffmiller for reviving this fantastic blend. You deserve a medal!

I feel the TAD growing in me again.
