Hey everyone, im putting in an order by the end of the month. This will be my second time ever ordering snuff, and last time i bought a box of 20 poschl red bull tins, they give you a deal on snuff.me.uk.I liked it a lot, but i wish i had more variety, so im buying individual tins this time, and im not sure what brands to try out, so so far ive only got 2 different brands. Poschl and Gawith Hoggarth.
Poschl Redbull snuff/Poschl Gawith Apricot snuff/Poschl Ozana President snuff/Poschl Gawith Cola Snuff/Poschl Packards Club snuff
Kendal Cinnamon snuff/Kendal English Rose snuff/Kendal Whisky snuff
Im thinking of trying some of the Samuel Gawith flavours too, but im not sure if its any good or not. Also whats the deal with “Gawith” You got Samuel Gawith, Gawith Hoggarth, and Poschl makes 2 flavours im getting Gawith Apricot and Gawith Cola. So whats the deal with that??
SG is very good. Quite a different base tobacco present here. Rich, dense, sometimes smoky, etc. I dig Black Coffee and Vanilla the most, but their Kendal Brown is very highly regarded on this forum.
Ill probably get all three of those, but how would all of you describe the different characteristics between SG and GH, and which do you think has a higher nicotine level and which is stronger in terms of the scent flavour, ect I wanna put this order in asap and i wanna know what i am getting.
Vito: What is it that you want and like?
Obviously, the last time you bought a bunch of menthols, but have you tried other types and flavors? Everybody here will give you their favorites, but the bottom line is that you need to get some snuff that YOU like.
Now, having said that, one suggestion I’d offer is a 10 for 9 sampler from Toque direct sales. You pick 10 10-gram cans from over 30 flavors and styles. There are Toasts, mentholated and non-mentholated fruit flavors, a couple of really good SP styles, and even a coarse ground style called Berwick Brown that’s kind of similar to a scented Kendal. All in all, that’s a good cheap way of expanding your repertoire.
Chances are you’ll find more than a few that you’ll like, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to boot.
Oh, and by the way, here’s a little history of the Gawith name and why it’s so associated with snuff:
snuffme.uk sells the SG or GH in “sneeze boxes”. While some snuffs may be OK in these others like the KB’s and Rappee’s will not. Any English snuff will dry out quickly in these types of dispensers. I recommend Getting your SG and GH from Mr.Snuff (no affiliation).
Does this sound like a good diverse selection?
poschl red bull
poschl gawith apricot
poschl gawith cola
poschl ozana president
GH cinnamon
GH english rose
GH whiskey
SG vanilla
SG black coffee
SG irish d
Nope…it’s an SP. It will be coarser than a toast (though still fairly fine), untoasted, and usually has more citrus than the Kendal Browns I enjoy so much. Generally speaking, of course.
Do not order SG or GH from snuff.me.uk. unless you order bulk. They only sell them in tap boxes and you WILL be disappointed. You are being far too narrow in you approach. The best recommendation I can give is to try as many different companies and as many different varieites as you can afford. You will soon find some favorites and then we can help you refine your search further. If you are experimenting with English style snuffs, a Kendal Brown, an SP, a Toast and a Rappee are all a must just to see the major styles. Once you go into other cultures the styles become even more diverse. A few menthols, traditional English medicateds, gourmands and florals are also a good thing to try, even though these can be divisive.
As far as the Gawith name, the link provided by @Elwin is a good read. If you want the short version here it is: Samuel Gawith started in the 18th century as a family business. By the 19th centrury one of the Gawith family and a partner (Hoggarth) broke off to from their own company, in the same town - Kendal. They’ve been competitors ever since.
Since British law forbids any oils to be used in snuff, Gawith Hoggarth has contracted with Pöschl in Germany to manufacture and distribute for them the Gawith Apricot and Gawth Cola snuffs. Most German snuffs are oil based. German law is different. There, only non perishable oils (eg food grade mineral oils) may be used. Both laws are actually based on the same premise, however, which is to protect you from using rancid snuff.
Snuff.me.uk is a great source for bulk Samuel Gawith, and their own brand Jaxons. For trying out however, the sampling there should be limited to snuffs that are sold in tins or screw top tubs. Wilsons of Sharrow, Frubourg & Treyer, Toque. Any of the German/Indian/South African/Dutch ones should be safe from there.
Its good that you are asking. Most people don’t. It saddens me greatly when people buy crap and think its themselves that are at fault for not liking it. Most snuff is excellent if bought from the right source or in the right container.
Most people wouldn’t suggest it but I am only in my third month of snuffing and enjoy toasts off all forms greatly. I am going through my F&T HDT like no tomorrow, and have almost finished a 10 gram tin of Wilsons Irish 22 in less than a week. I like the coarse snuffs too but in my opinion if you take a nice pinch of a toast it’s almost less difficult to snuff then coarse snuffs, Kendal Brown, etc. Take a nice large pinch and sniff lightly in each nostril, then repeat while slowly moving your thumb and forefinger over your pinch while sniffing lightly. Take your time and do this until the pinch is gone or there is just enough left to be sniffed directly from your thumb. I guess it sounds like a lot of work but after a few pinches its pretty simple and oh so satisfying. Between that and a couple smokes from a pipe I have cut my snus intake down to two portions a day. I so far have only found the poschls to my dislike everything else is fair game. If you are going to go with menthol I would suggest MCchrystal O&G. And also for a toast Wilsons Irish 22. I am a snuff newbie and those are two of my favorites thus far, Ive tried about 25 different snuffs.

How long did we think that GH was junk before we tried the tubs? Now I can’t think of one that I don’t enjoy.
Also I was getting to excited about having all this new snuff that i went ahead and put in my order last night, this is the stuff i got:
Poschl Packards Club
Poschl Lowenprise
Poschl Ozana President
Poschl Gawith Apricot
Kendal Whisky
Kendal English Rose
Kendal SP
SG Vanilla
SG Black Coffee
SG Irish D
Seems that the tap boxes do not seal well and the contents dry out and lose flavor rapidly. I don’t know this first-hand (haven’t bought any) but that is the common opinion. The German oil-based product fares better than the English water-based product from what I have read.
@cstokes4 that reminds me, While I was on my whirlwind sample tour I completely skipped over GH because only sneeze boxes were readily available. I suppose it’s high time I give them a shot now that their containers are awesome.
It’s true, tap-boxes will dry out much more quickly than most. With the exception of the Poschl tap boxes… But that’s just me. The ones I have bought haven’t really dried out… Only the Zwiefacher that I bought in a tap-box dried out quickly (Still amazing though!) (And the Samuel Gawith Vanilla dried out pretty badly too LOL, it’s like dust now )
