So I am thinking about my next snuff order (aren’t we all) and have decided I want to try some more SG offerings. I have been partial to some of their rappee blends for a while and recently sampled Elmo’s Reserve. It’s a cracker, as is Viking Dark, which is essentially an SG snuff. I am curious about a few others but not sure what to go for. I have tried and liked: Black Rappee Scotch Black London Brown Irish D Light Elmo’s I tried one of the Kendal Browns and wasn’t so keen. The tobacco was good but I didn’t like the orange flavour. I am thinking I want to try McCombie but not sure if it might be too similar to London Brown? I also quite fancy trying one of the Crests, but not sure which to go for. Maybe Princes Dark, but not sure how it compares to the F&T Princes? I like the F&T version a lot but I don’t need two very similar varieties in my collection. I am also curious about Cob Dark… If it helps, I am not too keen on menthols or SP types. Any suggestions on which I should go for? Thanks in advance for any advice.
SG Kendal Brown Plain, its all tobacco and no orange flavour. Its my favourite SG snuff ps Viking Brown and SG KB Plain are the SAME SNUFF
Elmo’s Reserve is nice, if you like Tonquin. Compliments 1792 Flake pipe tobacco nicely. Of course, this could be dangerous if you have anything less than a Herculean tolerance for Nicotine… OOPS! Never mind, I see that one is on your list… The only other SG I’ve tried is Raspberry, and I wouldn’t recommend it. It tastes more like Cherry cough syrup to me than Raspberry…
If you like peppermint, the Peppermint Dark and Mastiff are good. Also good, Golden Glow and Grousemoor. IMO the Cob Dark IS worth trying, I like it.
Black Coffee.
Celtic Talisman, Banana and the other all ready mentioned, wild duck worth trying
Banana
Peppermint Dark and Lavender Dark are excellent too.
I’ll echo the KB Plain. Seems like that’s exactly what you are asking for. There are four different KBs from these guys and only one of them unscented. As to the Crests, seems like Red Crest fits closer with what you describe as your taste, however I’m more partial to the Blue and Yellow. Cob Dark is a solid dark snuff, but fairly perfumey. Princes Dark is comparable to the F&T but not as perfumed. Its a matter of taste as to which one one prefers, and the only way to determine that is to try each. SGs SPs are not too similar to WoS if thats what you are thinking of. SP Scotch and SP No.1 High Mill are excellent snuffs. I guess I should reinforce Grousemoor up there too. Its on the coarser side, and similar to Red Crest, but I think a different base tobacco.
I think if I remember right, a guy from SG said that the Grousemoor is the KB base tobacco but with a different scent. In any case it’s really good IMO…
Good stuff. Thanks for your guidance, guys. I have put some Grousemoor, KB Plain and Princes Dark in my basket, along with a couple of other non-SG snuffs. McCombie seems to be out of stock at the moment, but when it is back I shall do another order for that, Red Crest and Celtic Talisman. As Charles Montgomery Burns would say, ‘Excellent…!’
McCombie is the coarsest ground snuff I’ve tried, but the tobacco flavour is really nice.
If you haven’t placed your order yet, the Honey is really nice.
SG Vanilla - coarser, more moist, much more tobacco flavor than vanilla, good nic hit SG Cola - actually smells like cola syrup, dry, light, an every 15 minute snuff if you like cola flavors. SG Cherry - seems more of a cream/soapy cherry flavor, light nic hit, worth a try only if you like cherry all of this is my opinion, of course!
Wild duck is exceptional. All their sp’s are great. Caveat - Only 25g vac sealed cans. Anything smaller is dry and horrid.
Elmo’s Grousemoor Princes Dark honorable mention to London Brown
I’ve not been able to place my order yet as (I had forgotten) I am waiting on the bank to send me a new card, as I lost mine on Saturday. So…time to add more to the list. It now has: Grousemoor Princes Dark KB Plain Honey Wild Duck I sure hope that card arrives tomorrow…
SG Apple is one of the best snuffs I have ever had, I’m saving up for bulk. Its fine and flavorful, not tangy and not too sweet. SG Celtic Talisman is one of the sweeter of the SG snuffs I have had. Black Cherry Vanilla I beleive, nice after a meal, i gave my tin away to a friend, not because I didn’t like it, because he was a good friend :D. SG Vanilla is a nice coarser snuff, its been a while since I have had a pinch and i’m long since run out of it, but i remember it being wonderful regardless. SG Black Coffee is a real coarse snuff with exceptional coffee flavor, if you sit down with a tin of this and a cup of joe first thing in the morning, you might end up using this snuff ritually. SG Banana was nice, it wasn’t all that great (imo), but SG certainly did a good job of making that flavor work in a snuff. SG Dr. Vereys Full is an amazing snuff, my tin fell victim to a storm drain while at work. I wish i could explain this snuff to you, but its been far too long since i’ve had it. (I think an order is overdue for me, i just saw that I don’t own any SGs anymore!) SG Strawberry was also an excellent snuff, a bit more on the sweeter side, not like Cletic Talisman though. Good luck and have fun!
Okay, so my first batch of SG snuffs arrived. I gotta ask…do KB Plain and Grousemoor taste almost identical, or was there a batch error? It isn’t unheard of at SG (I recall when a load of Navy Flake got tinned in St James Flake tins a few years back). There is a difference, but it is very subtle - the KB Plain is far from plain - quite scented in a sweet, powdery way. I am not bothered if there is some kind of mix up as, whatever is in the KB tin, I like it! I just wondered if this was normal!
KB Plain is PLAIN it has no flavouring of any kind so if your tin has a flavour that isn’t pure tobacco than your tin isn’t KB Plain
