So for the past 2 years I’ve tried all sorts of snuff. I’ve discovered anything mentholated, coarsely ground or too dry sets my nose running. I used to think that’s just an effect of using snuff. Turns out it isn’t. Viking Dark never clogs me up or makes my nose run and I can use it all day, every day. Could some of the more seasoned users, share what they feel the moisture and grind is on Viking Dark, and what other snuffs would have a similar grind and moisture level. It’s just perfect for me and would like to get more like it. I’ve heard mention it’s from Samuel Gawith and of the snuffs from them I’ve had it’s been nothing but pure excellence. Mind you both of the snuffs I’ve had from them are coarse, Lavendar Dark and Peppermint Dark. This grind makes my nose run and as much as I love the tobacco base and scents, it’s just too much trouble…I do love their quality though.
You might have more joy with Sam Gawith’s brown base, as I think of it- Kendal browns, of course, firedance, elmo’s reserve, Grousemoor. There are probably more but these are the one’s that I’ve tried. Anything called “dark” seems to use the black rappee base.
i think firedance is exactly the same base, just its as fruity as… you get the point. the scent is very strong. might be a good one to mix with viking dark, tone down the fruit.
I am pretty much in the same boat @thorgrimnr. Nothing satisfies me like Viking Dark, all around just my love of the snuff world. I told myself that I would not run out of it again after the last time, but my fiendish nose sniffed all of my last order faster than I anticipated. Mrsnuff was out so I ordered a few others that seem like they may be similar and I’ll let you know if they an even compare when I get them. Hopefully can find something that is comparable for a bit of change of pace, it just seems that any other snuff I get into doesn’t matter as my mind is on the Viking.

Would it pay to get Viking Dark (I keep wanting to put initials and thinking it’s a bad idea >:) ) in bulk and trying to mix in small amounts of stronger smelling snuffs for the variety? Firedance is an excellent example of one that might work, or maybe a potent F&T floral, or even Seville. Toques Xmas Pud, menthols and mints may be possibilities too. That way you get your “nose friendly” base, and a raft of subtly scented variations
im not sure. if the viking didnt have such a burnt tyre aroma id say definitely yes, but im not sure how well itd play with snuffs like the F&Ts.
Fair point …

that’s a decent idea @50ft_trad but bulk shipments are a no go for me. Too much duty when it arrives unfortunately. I do like the burnt tire scent of Viking Dark but am just keen to have some different scents but with about the same grind and moisture level. @lunecat I would love to get my hands on some of that Silky Dark, not sure if http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/ ships to the frozen wasteland colony that is Canada. I was hoping Mr Snuff would have it but have to check again. @Nosemud Ah so you must be my long lost brother. thanks all for your comments thus far.

My Smoking Shop does ship to Canada. They have good prices and excellent service.
I believe Viking is made by SG so you should find some other dark course moist snuffs that are similar
I’ve discovered that it was Viking Dark and NOT Toque Natural Toast that burns the skin around my nostrils. Does anyone else experience this? It makes my nose feel chapped for about 15 minutes right after snuffing, even if I rinse or wipe with a moist paper towel right after.
well it is probably the texture. If you rubbed sand on your nostrils they’d get chapped. Just my guess though.
Maybe so. I thought perhaps snuff could irritate skin.
If my nose is sore from blowing or excessive (for me) snuffing, any snuffs can cause irritation. Remember also that snuff is alkaline which will complicate any pre-existing irritation
I’m a bit tardy to this thread, but after snuffing a 500 gram bulk tube of the marvelous Viking Dark over the past several months, in addition to a few grams of others in the same genre, I’ll be damned if I can find anything resembling burnt tire in the scenting. I get great, nicely fermented tobacco expertly milled into a fluffy, slightly moist medium grind all-day treat. It reminds me of SG Black Coffee minus the coffee scent. Just my opinion.
I feel the same way as @chefdaniel . the grind and moisture of SG Black Coffee is very similar to viking dark. Love them both
Viking Dark and SG Silky are the same snuff. Someone posted a photo of his Silky tin, under the edge of the label was a VD label! I have a tin of the Viking, but I like the other, coarser dark Gawith snuffs more. My newest discovery from them is Cob Dark, which I really like a lot. Great coarse tobacco base with a very interesting floral scent that lingers for awhile.
SG Black Rappee is similar except coarser, also in a funny way Sternecker Staubinger is similar.
@thorgrimnr I had a thought about this earlier on as I brought the tin with me today for a change. Have you tried SWS Mull of Oa? Course, peaty, moist and smokey - Although it’s more pricy I wouldn’t imagine that you would be disappointed in this. Just a thought anyways; hope you’re sucessful in finding some others that you like
I’ve tried Vikings Blond and Brown and I have an unopened tin of Dark to try next. In terms of bulk ordering @50ft_trad - ask for a ‘case of VD’ perhaps?
