Help identifying snuffbox

P

Hello all. I recently acquired this snuffbox and would appreciate any information the snuffbox collectors may know about it. From what I gather it’s probably Victorian, silver, and the inside is gold plated. It polished up quite a bit since these photos were taken and is currently full of F&T Princes I’m not interested in selling but would love to hear any insight other collectors may have to it’s origin etc. Pics at: Pavig’s snuffbox

The only insight I can offer is that it’s beautiful.

Hello pavig. This is an interesting pattern on the lid. I think it’s Southern European made, or maybe French? What are the marks? Could not make them out from your photo. Is this silver or brass?

P

Viking. The box appears to be silver with gold plating inside. There is a makers mark on the bottom which reads [J.G] (reversed out of a rounded rectangle impression). Two other marks are to the right but they’ve been worn down presumably by years of eager pinching - gold on one side is quite worn. On the underside of the lid is scribed in freehand. It appears to say: 1204 aaj |- LL |- or 1204 aaf |- LI |- … the writing is so tiny it’s difficult to read.

What a wonderful box! A good antique dealer or auction house should be able to help you identify it, but be careful not to get ripped off.
