im not quite sure if ive introduced myself as when i made this account I was more or less observing and learning from my more senior snuffers but if I havent hello to all. But, I urgently need the advice of my fellow snuffers as about 3 weeks ago I began snuffing, crumbs of comfort, old paris, and seville was my first order. I began casually snuffing sometimes not for days at a time i havent made a dent in any of the tins, about 7 days in i bought some toque snuffs and enjoyed them greatly but last week after 3 days of fairly constant snuffing i blew my nose and noticed some blood i was fairly nervous but brushed it off, for the first time in a week today i snuffed again, st.clements and there was blood again. What does this mean? also can snuffing cuase a deviated septum or any other serious or plagueing conditions? Thankyou

The only time I get a bloody nose is when I sniff too hard, pick, rub inside and blow too hard. I would suggest being very gentle and try not to irritate it while snuffing.

Try using a Saline Nasal Spray, you may be overly dry. YMMV

sounds like an overly dry nose to me as well. when my nose is very dry and I use a snuff that tends to dry up in the nose, it’s not uncommon to get a mild nosebleed (by mild I mean that it doesn’t run, just shows up on the tissue after a blow)

One other thought relates to technique. I’m of the opinion that sniffing is best when I draw tobacco only into the wide part of the nostril, about the same area as one could put their finger into their nose. Beyond that the membranes are very sensitive, for me at least. Although hardly elegant, one technique is to place the snuff on the end of a finger (nails trimmed helps) and insert it into the nose without sniffing. This avoids overshoot.

Snuffing will not give you a deviated septum. I have a few dots of blood in my tissue when I blow weither I snuff or not. Whet I first got started snuffing I got a couple nose bleeds. But my nasal mucosa toughened up and it’s not an issue anymore. If you are in a particularily dry area you can get nosebleeds. I’m from the east coast. When I viited MN I got nose bleeds because it was so dry there and my nose dried up and got fragile.

P

I hate to say this but my view is that if the nose bleed continues after all due care, as set out above by fellow snuffers, I would not do it. perhaps some ‘safe’ chew might be a better option, if you are trying to avoid the dreaded cancer sticks .

I think the only responsible advice is to stop using snuff and see if it clears up; if it doesn’t then see your doctor. Snuff is not suitable for everyone and I have known a few people who could not get used to it, unfortunately you may be one of them. One thing I am certain about is that you should not try to snuff through this and ignore it. Also, I would not try to get used to it if it causes your nose to bleed - it’s not worth causing any damage. It’s probably nothing more sinister than an overly sensitive nose and there will be no long term damage; but don’t ignore the warning sign.

Most OTC drug labels give the same advice. If symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult a physician. I’m not a physician and make no claim that I am certified to give professional medical instructions. However, I would play it safe. Without a proper examination who knows what could be going on.

Thankyou! to all of you who posted, I do believe now that gentility and drieness are the culprits as in retrospect i do rather violently and contstantly blow my nose in preparation of snuffing due to the high mucous levels in this allergy season. and thankyou to rdunnion as well as when I began snuffing I had done my responsible research on cancers and such but had never considered a deviated septum. I had again tried snuffing today and was in fact successful. once again thankyou to all:)

That’ll do it. Try not to overblow your nose. It might seem like the thing to do, but I must say I don’t blow my nose that often- maybe two or three times a day. I guess unless you’re using really coarse snuff… I don’t normally get congested from snuff until the evening. However, when I first started snuffing, I blew my nose quite often and that’s what gave me most of the issues. Try not to blow your nose so much. It’ll work better than you think… I snuff every day all day. There’s almost not a time there isn’t snuff in my shnozz. I have never had a bloody nose from it. I agree with the above- I say quit snuffing and see until it subsides and if it doesn’t go see the doc!

As I have heard before, the Nose knows! . The more you snuff, the more knowledge and technique you will acquire. You’ll get to the point where you nose will “let you know” when it needs to be blown .
