I understand some F&T snuffs are based on old recipes. Do you guys have any suggestions for other heirloom/vintage/old world recipes? I would like to find some snuff that is scented the way it was in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Some of Wilson of sharrow and Samuel Gawith are very old recipes. Have a look at their websites and there’s also info searching on this site and in the library.
Bernard’s Feinster Kownoer is a recipe from like 1903 IIRC and the style of snuff (augentabak) is older than that. It used to be green, that style anyway, I don’t know about Kownoer. But it’s always dry as hell in tapboxes, not sure if it’s supposed to be like that. Really cedary, woody scent; it’s a plain snuff. Burns like the dickens.
Stg. de Kralingse Snuif en Specerijen Compagnie De Ster en De Lelie has revived a couple of historical snuffs made in the windmills. Jaap Bes.
@horus92 Kownoer is one of the few (only?) Bernard snuff that is solely water moistened, and as such it suffers greatly in tapboxes like English snuffs do. They used to sell it in glass bottles. I wish they still did.
de kralingse snuffs certainly have that vibe. wind power mill process with spices being ground near by. recipe? don’t need no stinking recipe. gota be close to old time
The de Kralingse Holland Bolangaro is supposed to be an old type, also too the AP which is piney scented. They are both very good and worth a try, you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve got a nose full of their gingerbread at the moment. Grand stuff.
All done. Sir Walter and Abraxas. Will probably be using this exclusively. Expensive but quite nice and need to use very little. Well worth the cost. As it should be.
PS: try the Connoisseur Cerise. Very nice!! Mull of Oa great also Next on the try list is Crème de Figue
No relationship here. Just so you know that they have a website. http://theartisansnuffsociety.com/
