I´m a beginner, really! To me, so far, London Brown and Irish High Toast and Santo Domingo! I´m lucky, i can try them all.
Well, go on. Tell us what you think to the Hedges, your title to this thread.
I finally managed to try some L260 and boy, am I confused! The menthol is there all right, as is camphor and, I’d say, eucalyptus. What bothers me is a kind of “grassy” (I don’t know the proper term) note that emerges after the blast and that smells almost like hay about to ferment or something like that - a note that I’m not sure I like. It’s a pity, because the actual “medication” blast is rather awesome and this “grass” thing almost dumbs it down…
I’m confused too! Why do mostly all snuffs have that hay smelling tobacco in them anyway?
@juxtaposer - I might be still a newbie, but I’ve been sampling extensively and I am sure I *never* found that specific aroma in any other snuff. It certainly might be the tobacco, but it’s as certainly not a common one - perhaps what I mean by “hay” is not what you mean by “hay”?
How about we hear the threads author give his thoughts on L260? ^5 bru
Straw. Dried mowed grass.
Absolutely…a rather weak attempt at hazing on my part. The predicament does bring up an important point though. That no matter what the scent, it is the tobacco that makes a snuff. It’s all about the tobacco! Note; Before all you vegetarians chime in I know there are some great non-tobacco snuffs but that is beside the point.
@juxtaposer - hazing aside, I entirely agree. I’ve been sampling Dholakia snuff all day, with a couple pinches of FUBAR Grunt & Medic, and the tobacco is very distinctive across the range (yes, even the FUBARs seem to share that very spicy/floral base, to me at least). Back to the L260: this morning I brewed some Twinings English Breakfast for my gf, and for a couple of seconds after dropping the bag, before the full flavor* develops, there was the “damp herb” scent I perceive in L260. Perhaps this is something you guys can tell me more about - perhaps it’s L260’s way of being fresh, as opposed to ammonia, or maybe it’s really there and it’s always gonna be there, in which case I’m not sure I’ll ever grow to fully appreciate this snuff…
@Mikke, do you also get the grassy smell from L260? I’ve only had 1 tin of it and the menthol was to strong for my liking.
I have not had Hedges since someone sent me a sample and I used it up over a year ago. However, I will attest to it having a very pronounced scent that was clearly not menthol, eucalyptus or camphor. Was it the combination of the three in just the right proportions? Perhaps. In either case, there was some scent very specific to this snuff that is not found elsewhere. Its a shame that the menthol is so ridiculous in it, because otherwise it would be a regular for me. @Mikke: Is this what you wanted? For the forum to discuss Hedges for you, so you could make a decision on whether to buy it? Any snuff is worth buying once for a trial. There is always snuffreviews.com to get more opinions on almost any snuff.
I find that Hedges makes a great mixer, the menthol is so strong you only need a little to add a bit of menthol to a mix.
Someone told me that L260 and WOS SM 500 were virtually the same. I have never tried L260. Is there any truth to this?
Wilsons SM 500 is pretty good, IMO, and I’m no menthol lover. They specifically state they use the Chinese mentho crystals in this one. I don’t know one menthol crystal from the next, but SM 500 is signifcantly superior to SM (no number or color). However, it does not have that identifiable taste that Hedges does, for better or worse. It has no camphor, only eucalyptus. It has a bit of sweetness to it as well, whereas Hedges to my memory, tasted strictly medicinal. Now take this with a grain of salt because I don’t have them at the same time. I’m comparing my current sample of SM 500 to my memory of Hedges.
Hedges goes incredibly well with drinking a beer. No other snuff has quite the flavour with a beer.
I get a “grassy” smell from Venters Menthol and Camphor. Never tried the L260. I think Rumney’s Export is a good medicated. The Venter’s isn’t too bad. Course and strong like the rest of the S. African snuffs I’ve tried. Are there finer ground snuffs from that part of the world?
Go easy on Mikke, its obvious his english isnt great. Love L260, strong menthol and easy to take. Buy it! Should be compulsary.
The English menthols to me, have a sharp bitting menthol, that strongly effects my nose, and usually stops it up. Though the Indian made menthols don’t seem to do that.
i think hedges is a great snuff to let people try snuffing for the first time … when i bring it to the bar with me people i know love the nose clearing eye watering effect you get from it . one bloke wants me to get him a tin with my next order
I’ve tried it again, because I really really like the menthol blast - but that smell is still there, and it’s way too nauseating for me - it’s more like burnt rubber or something like that, a sweet/acrid smell that just doesn’t “sound right” within the general mentholation. For the experiment’s sake I’ve also compared it to Toque Peppermint (because I suspected it might be some sort of mint-y flavor) and to WoS Camphor & Mild, but it’s something else entirely. Still, if you guys don’t smell anything like that, perhaps it’ll go away in due time, right?
