Hi All, Trying to quit the cigs here. Using Three Thistle Scotch snuff which is strong as hell. Not really my preference. I love Old Paris though. I’m curious about any snuff made by Hedges that has a strong nicotine content and yet is dark, coarse and semi moist like Old Paris. Please let me know about snuff by Hedges first, and then any other brand you think I might like. Thanks All. Love the forum!
Hedges is made by imperial tobacco and L260 is the only surviving variety.
Oh ok, where can I order it?
Just about any online shop carries it. Its one of the most widely distrubuted snuffs in the UK. Be careful, its extremely strong menthol. Also its not dark coarse or semi-moist.
Maybe try medicated no99 first it’s a bit more milder on the menthol . L260 freezes your face off. !
There are no really strong nic menthols, the apparent strength is down to the amounts of menthol used. McChrystals OandG is probably the best medicated snuff - or certainly the most popular. The Dholakia and 6 Photo menthols seem seem a bit milder to me.
Hedges L260 has a definiate high nicotine content !
I’m only going off how it feels to me, but I think we often think something is high nicotine because of the grind - higher surface area, so a better nic delivery system or a stronger menthol content giving the feel of a higher strength than it is. Hedges gives a head rush because its strongly mentholated, and its also quite fine, hence more surface area. Its a bit like people are convinced Vodka or Tequila are ‘strong’ drinks when they are the same as any other spirit. But…we can’t settle this until snuffs carry the nicotine content on the packaging. I would be extremely surprised if, come that day, there is much difference between any of them. You also have to take into consideration your personal tolerance for nicotine. Mine is extremely high and none of the snuffs renowned as high strength feel strong to me, I use Quit as an all day snuff or Dholakia White quite happily. @Vathek - I am sure of it, I’m certain of it, I just can’t prove it:) It matters not in the grand scheme…
definatly true that something that makes your nose runnier will increase the nicotine uptake rate of snuff.
Was the analysis of nasal or oral snuff? Nasal snuff is a tiny part of the scene in the US and the term almost always refers to oral snuff, ie dip. I would be surprised if there have been any significant academic studies, at all, of nasal snuff in the US. In any case my comments are only about English products because I don’t really use US snuffs. Most English companies use two or three basic flours - fine, medium and coarse, and put the flavourings on top of them - so, for example, Toque Raspberry will be the same base product as Toque Vanilla - the only thing that changes is the flavouring and the nicotine stays the same although they can feel different in the nose, especially when mentholated. As I say, its all academic until they are all analysed.
I can’t open it so I take your word for it, but as I say my point is only about English snuff. Until such time as an English study is done it will remain a matter of opinion. Thank you for an interesting discussion.
Molens Latakia Ao 1860 has some good nic and is coarse and moist.
@Snuffster have you tried Viking dark yet. It is very defiantly higher in nicotine than other snuffs. It is quite course ground so the surface area thing doesn’t count. It makes my head spin after a big pinch anyway.
I haven’t but it sounds good so will be on my next order.
someone is selling a 1930s 40s one on ebay says the ingredients are Menthol 4.5%, Oleum Eucalypti 4.5% Tabacum Pulveratum 91%. wonder if thats true today ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Old-Snuff-Tin-Hedges-c-1930-40s-/330622310066?pt=UK\_Collectables\_Tobacciana\_Smoking\_LE&hash=item4cfaa016b2
@Snuffster let us know what you think when you get it.
l260 is far stronger in menthol and nicotine than o&g. o&g seems more of a camphor+menthol.
