I know there’s a similar thread from 2010, but I thought I would ask about it in a new thread… Does anyone else get heartburn when snuffing a lot? I used to get it big time from Skoal, especially if I ever swallowed. My snuff use has gone up recently, and I’ve been noticing the heartburn again. Not nearly as bad as with Skoal, but it’s still annoying. I don’t get it all the time, but when I do it sticks around for at least 2 or 3 days if I do nothing about it or take Tums. Usually it will go away if I take OTC famotidine (spelling?) from the supermarket. What do you do or use to reduce or eliminate your heartburn? It’s been suggested to drink more water. I definitely drink enough water/fluids every day. In the summer I usually put down at least 2 gallons of water each day. Cooler months I don’t drink nearly as much, but still well above average.
Have you been checked out for GERD? Two days is a long time to suffer. If you do have reflux issues don’t take it lightly, it can lead to worse problems.
@Mouse no, never even heard of that so I’m pretty sure I’ve never been checked out for it. It’s not like I get heartburn all the time. I usually only get it from a few certain foods and if I swallow some skoal juice.
I do have GERD. Snuff doesn’t seem to make that much of a difference, but I got a couple of cans of snus from those nice people in Israel, and have discovered that even if I spit rather than swallow it sends the reflux into overdrive. I suggest you get yourself to your GP and get some proper pills to knock it on the head completely, then see if the snuff sets it off again. You can take a shot glass full of RAW apple cider vinegar in some juice daily. I had acid re-flux now I don’t. Only the RAW cider works; pasteurized cider is dead and has no mother
I find milk is great for heartburn
@basement_shaman I only use Bragg raw ACV. Been using it for years. I usually put a shot in a large water bottle to hide the taste of the local tap water. I happen to be out of it at the moment though. I find it quite odd that the raw unprocessed ACV costs up to 10 times more than the processed useless crap that costs more to make.
@EricJ plant some apple trees and squeeze your own.
@basement_shaman Not a bad idea if I could wait a few years, but I’m pretty sure my town doesn’t allow apple trees anyway.
@EricJ What? a town that has a no tree policy
No fruit bearing trees. A lot of towns have that law. They say the fruit leaves a disgusting mess if it falls on the ground and rots.
and attract hobos too. You don’t want to turn your town in to Hoboton.

Really? ? ? That’s just wrong.
I’ve had acid reflux for some years, Prilosec (don’t sue me for using a brand name) knocks it out and keeps it away pretty well. But I think I’ll try the ACV one of these days. I wonder if kombucha might work too…
I read that as koom by ah (spelling?) at first. What is that? I never heard of it.
It’s a fermented tea drink. Brewed tea + sugar + a certain culture = a probiotic beverage. Considered rather good for the health by some.
I don’t normally drink anything with sugar, but I might give it a try. Where might one find such a thing?
It seems that most of the sugar is consumed by the culture, and typically a small amount of alcohol is created, probably of no concern to most folk, but I suppose detailed info exists somewhere. I buy it at my local co-op grocery store. It would be good to look at the label to make sure that you’re getting the “live” unpastuerised(sp) brew, so that all of the beneficial hasn’t been killed off. If you don’t drink it right away it should go in the fridge. A last note here is that in it’s natural state, it tastes kind of like rice vinegar, or maybe a cider vinegar- so I’d recommend trying a flavored one, my fave is ginger and anyways one can get used to the taste if it’s not too agreeable at first.
