I am a big fan of Wilsons of Sharrow’s Best SP. This snuff always seemed to me flavoured with citrus-bergamotte and something else in a very subtle way. The last two times I baught Best SP directly from Wilsons I was surprised with a straight forward flavouring. The Citrus-Bergamotte is in my opinion much more pronounced than it was. Not that it’s bad, but it has really changed, I think. Has anyone made a similar experiance or is it just me?
Best SP has been in continuous production since the 1700s and I very much doubt they would ever alter the recipe. When you buy from the company direct you get much fresher snuff than from a store and when snuff is fresh it does have a different taste than if it has been sitting on a shelf somewhere. WoS tins are not 100% airtight even with an unbroken seal and it gets slowly drier in texture over time - I have bought tins from tobacconists and found them completely dried out. Also no two crops of tobacco are ever completely the same so you are probably experiencing a mixture of these factors. To experience snuff as the blender actually envisages it, you need to buy in bulk. I have bought their best SP in bulk for years, and the snuff is always better than the tinned versions.
I totally agree with Snuffster. When available always buy direct and in bulk. Pipe tobacco offerings are always better in bulk then from a tin when fresh. Now with age the opposite is possible unless the bulk had been properly cellar-ed. Take Samuel Gawith plug version compare to the flake . The kendall plug is more robust then the best brown flake. and the flakes are cut directly from the same cake .Same with the cob plug and the 1792 flake. In conclusion air is the enemy for freshness of tobacco product. Do your best to protect the integrity of your stash. Air tight storage ,proper humidification, no extreme temperature changes, Avoid cross contamination. And most important keep out of reach of children.
The pound of best SP I have in bulk is like a totally different animal the the best SP I’ve gotten in tins
