I bought a snuff today called Gallahers WIT & WISDOM menthol snuff. I can’t find any info about it anywhere. Has anyone tried or heard of this? It comes in the crappy little wilson medicated no9 tin. I purchased it for a dollar. Its a medium grind, dry, mentholated snuff. However, It has a very interesting scent. It almost reminds me of a mentholated scotch with less smokeyness and more of a robust tobacco flavour. I would give it a solid 8/10 rating. If anyone wants to trade for some (my tobacconist has about 20 tins) I will take anything, especially Dholakia snuffs for my collection. I can also get original Helme (in metal tin) DeVoe’s Sweet, and Lorrilards. PM me for details! also, the tin has a red lid and a gold bottom. The top says Gallahers WIT &WISDOM menthol snuff. Holy shytes!

I don’t think that has been made in many years. Yeah I’ll trade for some. That was an Irish toast with menthol. I don’t know which part is the wit and which part is the wisdom. I’ve only heard the old timers talk about it around here. Gallaher’s is still in business but does not make snuff. I might even want to trade for some metal Helme tins. Check that Lorillard’s is it the Sweet, or one of the out of production ones?

I went back to the store and counted exactly 13 tins of this wondersnuff. Unfortunatly I’m a poor college kid and wont have the money to buy all of the snuff until monday. I won’t lie, the snuff is pretty old, and I’m sure has lost a lot of its luster. However, It still has a great taste, and a very unique one at that. I’m dissapointed at Xanders news, because i’m really starting to like this one a lot! If anyone wants to trade, I will take anything I don’t already have but, like I said before I would like some dholakia or american scotches. PM me for details! I will try to post some pics of it too. They have a 10 tin package and 3 seperate tins left. EDIT: The tins are 4.97 grams

Wow, you have really discovered something special. Wit and Wisdom is a mentholated high dried toast. It had a very limited distribution in the North of England, Lord alone knows how the store came by this: I can only assume its been on the shelves for years. I have a book from the 80’s where this is advertised but I have never seen any. I do have a single tin of its brother snuff; a plain HDT. I have some very interesting snuffs to trade if you are interested.

It is such a shame they don’t make this anymore! I could easily let it become my favorite. You guys are going to be blown away when you try it! The tin smell is a really spicy rich woody tobacco smell, with a VERY slight menthol too it. The menthol really takes the back-seat in this snuff, I don’t know if that was intenden, or because of its old age. When snuffed, I get a light burn, and the interesting smokey taste takes charge. The menthol is really very subtle. I’m going to change my prev review and give this a 9.5/10. It is just that good! I’m happy I get to spread the joy to you fellas! I wouldn’t mind keeping it all to myself, but I am curious to see some of your reviews on it as well. I am going to shut down any more trades. I will purchase the snuff next week and start packaging it up! I must leave now, I have to get my boat out of the lake before they drain it. Got the package. Thanks mrmaroon! This is a neat little tin of snuff. It is a bit old and the menthol seems to have faded quite a bit. But it’s still very good. It’s almost identical to Robby’s Top Mint Snuff. I don’t plan to use any more of it. This actually makes a nice display piece for the collection. Your SJ is on its way. Enjoy!

I added a little O&G to mine tony. It worked for the most part.

I was thinking of putting an open tin of SM 500 (which I can get locally) alongside an open tin of W&W inside a larger, closed container. The menthol flavour should transfer in a day or two without needed to actually mix the two. It’s a thought anyway.

That sounds like a good idea as well. I honestly like it the way it is, the menthol is very subtle. It doesn’t detract from the weird smoky smell, it almost acts like a catylist and makes the sum of both even greater!

@ermtony: That sounds like a good idea. I think I’ll try that with one of my tins when I get it, possibly adding an open tin of Hedges or some other strong menthol as well.

@ ermtony: You, snuffster and maybe Snuff Head are probably the only ones around here who can compare this to a memory. I’m curious as to how it compares. I wish I had gotten some when it was fresh.

Years ago my old Chief took it from time to time, and it was old snuff then! Can’t say I remember the flavour.

Nosechaw, Toffeenose, I got the scotches! They are great! Especially the rooster and honeybee. Rooster still doesn’t top BRUTON for me though, thats what I was interested in. Honeybee on the other hand is my new fav sweet.

I took some Wilsons Super Menthol and mixed some in with a tin of W&W. Seems to work okay. Not sure what level of menthol this was, so it’s hard to say if this is what it was like. Good either way.

new member here just saying hello wit and wisdom was my first snuff around 20 years ago it was probably made in the gallahers tobacco factory in belfast it was the biggest in the world at one stage a few miles from my house … its a shame they knocked it down and built a shopping centre there lovely victorian area building still have the can somewhere at my mums place

xander … i live in southern california now … you could always get the little blue tins of wilsons in most newsagents in ireland ( northern)

Well, that sounds like England too. From my understanding, it seems to be the most available snuff in the UK. I just wondered how common it is/was in your time there to see people using snuff. I have one of those little blue tins right in front of me. Time for a pinch.

Xander, you see cans of Wilsons in most corner shops (small Asian run stores) and newsagents in the UK but never see anyone using it. It is clearly viable for all these outlets to carry it and I think there is a large usership that is discreet bordering on secret.

Snuffster, in your line of work, I guess you may have had to do searches and have people empty their pockets and such. Have you ever seen anyone with some then? Just carrying a little tin?
