I like menthol in moderate to light proportions and but not the nose freezing flavor drowning amount of Radford or the ices. I like the flavor but I barely get it. I was wondering what mixes any of you have come up with that help bring out the flavor by reducing the menthol proportion to. A level that accents flavor. I have a snuff box used specifically for scorches but I’m not prepared to contaminate it with any mentholated snuffs until I get some ideas. I have a box used specifically for grand Cairo and I’m not going to mix anything in there either unless someone can reccomend it strongly. The main overly mentholated snuffs I have is Radford but if I hear of other good mixes and I like how the radford mixes I wouldn’t be so hesitant to buy mentholated snuff. I love the flavor of radford and just wish it wasn’t buried in menthol.
@Snuffster has been happy with adding about ten percent menthol snuff to his SP’s. Something like that.
Yes, adding various quantities to taste of any SP or plain snuff will do the trick.
I have come round to mellow menthols in the last year or so and have been surprised how little you need to add to the plain tobacco base. I mix plain snuff with menthol and let it sit for a day or two in an airtight container. For example, one five ml spoon of O&G to 25g of HDT. As has already been said, any plain or s.p will do the trick.
I like a little Radford mixed with a lot of Viking Brown on occasion.
10% - yep about that. I think menthol as a flavour, or snuff seasoning even, is very underused in the industry. For the most part you get great, Vicks vapor rub amounts that destroy any quality of the base tobacco. So 10% added to an SP or toast - or for that matter any snuff - is a good way of utilising the freshening properties of menthol without deluging the base. Dholakia and Toque have made some quite restrained menthols - for commercial brands - but I would still like to see it toned right down. High menthol content equates to rebound congestion for a lot of us but menthol is an excellent ingredient used sparingly.
Thanks everyone. Going to try that now with an empty smash box and some SP no 1.
Well TNT did the trick! It really is amazing how powerful a little menthol can be. At first I mixed it with at most 25% radford and it was brought to a level that although still quite powerful allowed the flavor to shine through. I really like menthol in reasonable proportions. It’s great for my eye soreness and headaches.
I’ve been trying more mixes with the radford. WoS wallflower is really brought to life bY a little bit of it and RnR becomes even more pleasant. Now that winter is over I’m starting to like a little more menthol.
