Last week I started experimenting with natural flavor to add to a plain scotch for not only a cool scent but to give me some of its benefits. I am using things that can be ground into powder to make things easy. I chose Railroad Mills sweet as my base. I first ground spearmint leaves to it will great rewards. Not only do you get a terrific scent but somehow micro particles make it to your mouth to give you a fresh sensation. I am working on orange peeel and vanilla bean tonight. I also bought some cinnamon sticks Could be fun Got any secrets to share?

D

Yea… I hide part of my pay check each week from my wife.

@distaind Any tips? Since I’m self employed, and the Boss Lady works the desk, I have to call it embezzling! @MattheFox There is a plethora of info about that subject embedded into this site, the spearmint, orange zest and vanilla sound good.

@matthefox, as you’ve discovered a fresh herb works well. You don’t always have to grind it into the snuff. If its moist and you have enough quantity, and a plain enough snuff (RR Mills Plain would do better than RRM Sweet) the snuff will absorb the scent. Try with other herbs. Summertime is better of course for availability but sweet woodruff is one of many we grew here, and I learned from Jux that it works really well. Peppermint, Thyme, Rosemary, Tarragon, Oregano: most of your stronger scented ones. Other things that are easy to come by: clove oil and tea tree oil are usually in any pharmacy. Dip a qtip in the oil and then put it in a closed container with the snuff until the snuff takes on the scent. Other essential oils are out there, but you might have to look harder. Whole fragrant flowers: same process. I’ve had great joy with lemon flowers, also tried lilac flowers, viburnum, cherry laurel, orange, lime. Coffee beans, tonka beans (not common, but are essential snuff equipment IMO), vanilla beans. Soak dry beans, then peel and split and set into a snuffbox. Other things in your spice cabinet besides cinnamon (as any cook will tell you fresh ground will give much more scent): nutmeg, allspice, cloves, anise, cardamom, coriander, fennel, cumin, juniper berries. I keep most of those on hand in whole form just for culinary reasons, but there’s no reason snuff can’t borrow them. Next check you liquor cabinet. Rum, gin, bourbon, sherry, and an seemingly limitless types of flavored liqueurs. You can either mix direct then dry the snuff to desired moisture, or let the snuff absorb it through evaporation like the essential oil tip above, except use a capful instead of a soaked swab. Its really as limitless as your imagination.

@hooked I am self-employed also but the wife has no dealings in any aspect of my business…so sorry I don’t know how you can get around that.

M

I found on the web, whipped cream & just about any fruit in a powdered form. I did wonder about another process that I had heard about where you bake the oil or extract into the snuff by mixing the parts, then putting it into a cello wrap, then a newspaper wrap, soaking it in water, then baking it for enough time to blend, then rolling it while wrapped until cool & regrind

J

I have an exceptional snuff made with coriander. A dark Burley cased with a coriander tea then topped with fresh ground coriander added at about 1%. My interests in snuff making have been mainly in combinations of tobacco types and casings that enhance the tobaccos inherent qualities. A very interesting procedure that is fairly simple for home scenting would be to make a strong tea with Perique, tobacco even a pipe tobacco with Perique would work, and add this to a snuff. Perfect for Scotch snuffs! The technique I used involved cooking off the excess moisture by setting a large metal bowl containing the sludge on top of a crock pot stirring constantly until grains become unbound by the moisture. This mix is ready to use but will mellow considerably if allowed to develop over a few months. Makes for a fortified high nicotine snuff.

M

You know, I have to just say it… This forum is just to cool because people offer up everything from a smile to laughs & back to thoughts that trip your mind by being on the same page.

M

I got a box of “True Lemon” from the store. It is crystallized lemon. I’m going to try a winter time mix by adding it & mint to Honey Bee snuff

M

Here is where I started. I found out that when you use natural lemon, the amount of mint only increases the freshness of the lemon and the honey notes are the afterthought. Also to note that my sinus’s cleared quickly, The lemon gives you a healthy dose of vitamin C and the mint clears your head, calms your stomach and is good for your intestinal track

B

I am glad to see this thread is about scenting snuff. I pictured Tarzan . Warming - cinnamon gets to burning in the mucous membrane, use with caution!

M

And a little lemon goes a loooong way

B

If you want effect try ginseng root and ginkgo leaf .but discontinue if you are allergic.

M

I am going to be exploring all kinds of ingredients now that snuff is my new favorite tobacco. I love ginseng People don’t know this about it but if you are healthy, ginseng helps keep you that way. If you are sickly, ginseng is a negative in your life

J

I have a ginseng, guarana and D white mix that I use daily.

M

@Juxtaposer do you get the same warming effect that you would have from a drink?

J

No warming effect noticed. @MattheFox

T

I have a ginseng, guarana and D white mix that I use daily.

Juxtaposer, I see that your living life in the fastlane.

B

I think it’s time we hold an intervention. And when I say an intervention I mean you distract him while I sample his snuffs.

M

Thats good to know about the ginseng. To make up a 1oz portion, I ended up using (2) packets of real lemon, 4 teaspoons of mint leaves and (4) tbl spoons of Honey Bee. I found out during the day (yesterday) that I was breathing clearly and had more energy. I am usually a little clogged in the morning and I started with this mix and my nose wetted out quickly and my nose & throat are clearing quickly. I think the lemon & spearmint shrink the membranes making breathing easy. It also kept me clear when I started rotating other snuffs

M

Here is one you got to try: One heaping teaspoon of Honey Bee Snuff One pinch of cinnamon Two pinches of ground nutmeg I am totally sure you are going to enjoy it

T

@MatttheFox Wow, i just mixed up some of your Honey Bee - nutmeg-cinnamon recipe… Awesome!

M

I am going to post all the successful experiments on this thread for everyone to try. I think it is a shame that local stores only carry certain snuffs but with a little imagination and a sore nose (failures) any snuff can become a winner

“A Perfect Vanilla Infused Snuff” For those of you that love Vanilla and want a natural experience do I have a recipe for you… What is needed: (1) Heaping teaspoon of Railroad Mills Sweet Snuff (1) Tablespoon of Ground Spearmint Leaves (1) Tablespoon of Pure Vanilla Extract (no corn syrup) A (1) quart ziplock bag A cello wrapper from cigarette pack (100’s if possible) cello tape newspaper a snuff grinder (only to reduce work/ not needed) SEE IMAGE 1 Start off by placing the Snuff and Spearmint into the ziplock bag (allow some air) Mix by moving the bag around Add in the Vanilla (making sure you put it in the bottom of the bag on top of the snuff otherwise it will be a pain to mix it from the sides of the bag) You are going to Knead this mix with you fingers from outside the bag, turning it from side to side and really getting it blended well (takes about 20 minutes) SEE IMAGE 2 The snuff now goes into the cello wrapper (let it pack itself, do not press it) Then fold top down to seal it (light but no air) and tape closed SEE IMAGES 3, 4 & 5 You will now wrap this in newspaper (other paper will not work properly) And tape the exposed ends so it doesn’t unwrap (do not tape everything) Preheat the oven to 350 (F) or 177 (C) Run water over your pack to soak the news paper Place in the oven for 20 minutes When complete, place in the fridge for 20 minutes to properly cool You can now open you new snuff and regrind or use a razor blade to chop it back up This Snuff is delightful, mild with a medium nicotine hit Everything was perfectly blended without any loss to scent or flavor SEE IMAGES 6 & 7 I hope you enjoy this as much as I did sharing

E

Great post and images. It’s inspired me to try some blends.

M

@eeldergill If you come up with a good natural one please don’t forget to share the recipe

H

Here I thought that you were talking about snuffing in the buff… I’m disapointed with the images!

M

I created an interesting Masala snuff that I want to share. Start off with making the Masala here http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/7419/a-masala-mix-for-your-scotch I then ground a bag of white tea to it Added (2) Tsp of Vanilla Extract (no corn syrup) Blended this with (3) heaping Tsp of Lorillard Then followed the wrap & bake instructions (above in vanilla snuff)

@MattheFox Man, you really HAVE become the mad scientist!

M

My 2nd wife was a chef and taught me well but I like Mad Scientist better

J

Yum!

M

It is finally finished, In a effort to have a high nicotine snuff I spent hours and wasted snuff trying to use Bruton as a base. The problem was I kept trying to soften the blow when I realized the cure was to enhance the snuff and remove the throat hit. So I created what I am calling Bruton’s Cerberus because it gives you Tobacco, High Nicotine & a healthy dose of Peppermint. I like it better than President because I used Vitamin E instead of paraffin oil believing that it is better for your nose and won’t clog you up but removes the Bruton throat hit Here it is: 4 Tablespoons of Bruton 3 Teaspoons of Peppermint Extract 2 Teaspoons of Vitamin E Blend well, then follow the wrap & bake instructions above (in the vanilla snuff) And you will have a great snuff that will maybe make you think like this

N

@MattheFox What kind of Peppermint extract are you using? Just Peppermint essential (etherical) oil (then 3 teaspoons sound like a huge amount to me?) or is this something else?

M

@Nosy Pure Peppermint extract has alcohol, oil of peppermint & water in it. The kind you find at the local store for cooking. If it was pure peppermint oil, yes that would be extreme. Also, the quantity of the Bruton is the 1.15 oz can give or take

N

Ah I see. Thanks a lot for clarification @MattheFox.

M

@Nosy I will never buy “President” again because (IMO) this is better and better for you

M

If you want this snuff a little dryer you could cut the Vitamin E back a small amount but it is part of the key to the snuffs success

N

I absolutely need to try the Vitamin E, sounds great and far better and healthier than liquid paraffin. Although I am quite new to snuff I feel that mixing my own is a way to really fresh and great scented snuffs. Far better than those often old, stale snuffs I can buy in local shops. And I know exactly what is in them. If I make small quantities there is also no need for added preservatives. Thanks for your inspiration and research.

S

I like the concept of the vitamin E but would like to state that it would work in small squantities that would be consumed relatively rapidly. Once mixed, particularly if not kept in a cool and hopefully dark environment, it will degrade fairly rapidly.

M

@stogie I believe that as long as it was sealed tight, the vitamin E would keep far longer than it would take someone to consume a 30 gram can (1 year plus) Pure vitamin E is sold in a clear bottle in a well lit store, so I am wondering why it would need to be kept in a cabinet. Granted that the vitamin E will not live like the dry scotch itself but I wouldn’t make up more than one batch at a time of any of the mixes in this thread because I want to enjoy the freshness of the product created.

S

@MattheFox the culprit is mainly the oxygen, which when combined with light and heat greatly speed the breakdown/oxidation of the product. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there is anything wrong with using Vitamin E, In fact I applaud it for several reasons… Good thinking!

_

Yea… I hide part of my pay check each week from my wife.

@distaind that was a hilarious off topic comment. Love the dry spontaneous response you gave…I was lmao…works good for you though, sure hiding some, buys more snuff!

M

What I really like about this Bruton Cerberus is you can do a healthy line right off the back of your hand.

D

@aanycaards it only really works if I get to the mailbox first tho

S

That is such a great idea.
