After Big L’s ebay find and some curiosity expressed by members. and Pieter’s suggestion to google the damn thing, I was inclined to do a bit of research. First off the name struck me immediatley that this was not going to be a typical American snuff. Sounded Polish. Detroit, where it was made, was also a major haven for Polish immigrants. It stood to reason that the Poles being big snuffers would have brought some of that tradtion with them to America. Here is a little article about Poland that mentions Kashub snuff: Article about PolandQuoted from the article: _Snuff-taking has long been a part of the heritage of the Kashubians, an ethnic subgroup of farmers and fishermen inhabiting Poland’s Baltic Coast. When the government banned snuff production, the Kashubs took to growing and processing their own according to age-old recipes._So far the only other things I have turned up were a past ebay auction from April for a full bottle (which nobody bid on) the current one on ebay, and someone’s question here on Snuffhouse. I will continue my search. Also it looks like I will have to broaden my search to include the Polish markets as well as the Indian ones in the region. There could still be a bottle of this sitting on a store shelf somewhere!
Here is something else: Which I found on this forum: Discuss Detroit
Awesome find there Xander, great post!!
Very interesting Xander, thanks
You’re welcome, lads. Filek, how did you obtain a bottle? Was it any good?
hello my name is gary goike,my great grandfather started goike kashub snuff in detroit ,michigan in the 1930’s ,I have a bottle of snuff \with snuff inside but very old and no good, also have a 1939 calander from the company as well as many articles.I would be interestd in buying the glass bottle from you as i’d like to give it to my father and my kids thank you. Goikes
Wow, how cool that you found this site. Could you give us a brief history of the company? Why did it disappear?
Welcome, Goikes. I never did obtain one of those bottles, but they still do surface on ebay from time to time. I would have loved to have tried that snuff. I’m sure plenty of us would be interested in the articles you have.
Hello,I found an old bottle of Goike’s Kashub snuff at an estate sale.I have an ebay store an was looking for information on it. It is a small sample bottle, about 2 inches tall.It has clear glass with a black metal screw cap and an orange and black label that says Sample Goike’s kashub Snuff,It is 3/8 oz and still has 99% of the snuff still in it and bone dry,I even tried a pinch and it did not kill me. what would something like this be worth? I could not find anything like it on ebay. Thanks
I forget what the last one on ebay went for, but I think it was under $10 (but more than tree fity, lol). I think before that, there was one not marked “sample” and went a bit higher. Why not offer it to your snuffhouse mates first as a silent auction via whispers?
@goikes Any chance of reviving the family business? I (and a good portion of the Snuffhouse.org family) would love to try it.
Hello Snuffalufagus , Your bottle is worth about 10 dollars for the glass bottle, and the plastic bottles are even less ,love to buy it from you ,send me an email if interested in selling. goikes
Mr_Snuffypants, No chance of reviving the business ,long gone my dad said he use to go in the shop and it was coated from wall to ceiling in brown snuff everywhere. He also said they did cigars in another section of the shop.Lady’s rolling cigars all day long.I guess from what he’s told me they were very busy business. All done in Polish neighborhood just north of Detroit,Michigan ,USA Goikes
Hi! I’ve been carting around an empty bottle of Goike’s Kashub Snuff for years in my little collection of old sample size products. I’m looking to sell it, email me if you’re interested!
@supervape Nice one, but might be a bit overpriced. Full ones come up periodically if you are patient, at about the same price.
Yea I was just putting it up there, I thought it was a bit over priced thats fo sho
@ Goikes - We’re cousins! My last name isn’t Goike, but my mother’s was. In fact, my grandfather was John Goike. Stewart Goike was my uncle. The story I was told by my mom was that the family business was bought by Copenhagen, and the building still exists - some 20 years back or so. Reading an on-line article on Yahoo! sparked my interest to find out if the building still existed, and what I could find on the family business and I did a search for “Goike’s Kasub Snuff,” and that’s how I found this site and post.
Does anyone from you family has a picture of mr Goike? I’d like to use one in my book.
Something is off about all of this. >_>
