Go buy some mason jars!

C

I recently conducted a trade with a member and was shocked when I opened the package to find a 200g container of 6 Photo and 2 10g tins of WoS that had all apparently been stored as received from the vendor, in the original packaging. I held my breath and tried all of them. The 6 Photo _barely_ had a little use left in it, but I’ll end up giving it away because it’s too dry for me and while the menthol and camphor linger the tobacco is diminished. The two tins of WoS were desicated. Mummy dry. This same member sent me two samples of pipe tobacco, and the pipe tobacco was just as petrified as the snuff was. I’m out 250g of good snuff for the experience. I’ll likely never trade snuff again. Listen up Snuffhouse! If you don’t already know this, go buy some mason jars and put your tobacco in it! There are only two storage solutions that don’t ruin your tobacco, mason jars and vacuum sealed tins with intact seals. Everything else is leaching precious moisture from your tobacco. 4oz jars are perfect for snuff, and 8oz jars are fine for long term storage. Once that flavor is gone, you can rehydrate, but you can never reclaim what was lost. This is especially crucial with snuff, where moisture level is so key to enjoyment. I have 90 lbs of pipe tobacco and about 15 lbs of snuff in the basement, all of it in mason jars and vacuum sealed tins. Yes, I have a lot of money invested in jars, but every time I go down to fill up my snuff box the snuff is as fresh as if I just got it in the mail that day. It’s worth the investment Snuffhouse. I’m sure most of you already know this, especially if you’re pipe smokers, but apparently not all of us do.

C

@cakeanddottle I have to agree with you with respect to pipe tobacco purchased in bulk and if I bought snuff in bulk then I would also use jars. My problem is that I am buying snuff in tins of 25g or less and even the smallest mason jars / jam jars would contain so much air compared to the snuff that there would probably still be problems. Given the wealth of experience on this forum can I ask which tins are okay for storage and which are not. The F&T and Toque tins have screw tops and seem fine to me. WoS 10g and SG 25g tins I am unsure about. When I replace the lids on those I sometimes have problems opening them again so they appear to be pretty airtight. I am sure that other newbies have similar issues so any comments here from the snuff veterans would probably be useful for all of us who are just starting out. If it is okay to leave snuff in those tins then the next question is - for roughly how long? I am loving snuff but it will take me many months to get through what I have already purchased and I am already looking at another order to try other varieties. All help and suggestions gratefully welcomed

2 oz amber bottles will hold 25 grams of snuff. They are fairly inexpensive and can be found many places online. I have some 25 gram purchases from when I was trying to determine what I liked that are stored that way. As with the mason jars they are as fresh as the day I received them. They are reusable and work great as a tap box as well.

T

What about (all my) 5 grams tins? (And other tins as well) Does it make sense to put few tins as they are (in the original tin) in one mason jar? To use one jar for all the mentholated snuff. One jar for all the scented snuff and one jar for the natural… I’ll be happy to hear your opinion.

Thanks for the nudge, @Slide, just ordered some amber 2 oz. and some cobalt blue 4 oz. bottles. I’ve been nervous about storing the bulks I just got in their original plastic jars.

B

@Tashi I can put five 10g tins in a half pint mason jar. Quater pint mason jars are also available if you look around which would be good for 25+ grams if you want to decant your tins. I also have a big apothecary jar that has a tight fitting rubber seal that holds ten 25g tins. I also have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-Vacuum-Starter-3-Quart-1-Pump/dp/B003UEMFUG/ref=sr\\_1\\_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1349563070&sr=8-11&keywords=food+bag+sealer Dirt cheap and work really well. I use it to seal up frozen rats before I put them in the freezer and it works great. You can easliy put eight 25g tins in a one gallon bag, suck the air out, and your good to go.

B

I empty all my snuff into jars ,even the vacuumed seal tins. and it is a good investment. for small tap boxes I suggest individual zip lock baggies. I displace the air with hot breath after filling a snuff box and replace the lid, This adds a tiny bit of moisture in the process.

T

@BigDaddySnuff @basement_shaman Thank you both (: @basement_shaman what is the size of the jars in the photo? (in gram if possible)

C

Thanks to everyone for all the info - I will put the WoS / SG tins into ziploc bags. I found an article on snuff storage on ermtony’s blog and that confirms that the F&T and Toque tins are fine for medium term storage.

B

@Tashi these are 4 ounce liquid measure, will hold 50 grams snuff packed tight

V

i’d feel horrible if i was responsibe for trading bad snuff.

D

So some of you guys put different tins in one ziplock? Multiple tins in one Mason jar? Don’t you worry about scent transfer

B

@distaind I keep like with like. Menthols have a jar, florals all stay together, and anything (sweet SG’s) that have a strong scent all have their own jar. Indian snuffs I don’t worry about. Say, Samuel Gawith’s Elmo’s Reserve and Celtic Talisman can live in the same jar because they play nicely together. I haven’t gotten into decanting tins yet because I don’t buy in bulk “yet”.

S

I don’t put tins in Mason jars. I put bulk snuffs or decant multiple tins of the same snuff. If I am not going to go through a 25 gram tin in a fairly rapid period of time it goes into a 2 ounce glass bottle. Snuffs I’ve purchased that I don’t care for I either give away pretty quickly or tape up the seal with electrical tape.

D

Since I don’t buy in bulk I have been putting the tins I buy in small ziplocks inside cigar boxes but I might have to place an order for some small glass jars

T

I think that with the next order from Mr Snuff I’ll try the glass jars that he has… And than I’ll have to get 1 or 2 snuff boxes (: From where are you guys getting/buying your jars or bottles? Like the 4 ounce @shaman_basemen has, or the 2 ounce that @Slide talked about?

C

4oz mason jars are 7.99 for a dozen and they seal

M

I just ordered some from this company: https://www.specialtybottle.com/index.aspx

S

I just ordered some from this company: Specialty Bottle - Wholesale Glass Bottles, Jars, Metal Tins

That’s where I have purchased my amber bottles in the past. I have sizes ranging up to 4 ounces.

B

@Tashi http://www.freundcontainer.com/wide-mouth-packer-glass-bottles/p/v4232B07/ I get several cases at a time. 2/4/8 ounce http://www.freundcontainer.com/plastic-attached-lid-containerspp/p/v2924B01/ http://www.freundcontainer.com/wire-bale-glass-jars-air-seal/p/v49619/ http://www.freundcontainer.com/canning-jars/c/437/ If you can’t find it at this webstore you can’t find it.

D

@sIide or anyone else who ordered from that web page. Do those screw on tops have the foam under the lids?

S

Yes they have a seal. It may be paper covered foam. Not really sure what it is. I have had them fall out but a little dab of glue solves it. That said…I think the ones basement_shaman uses are a better design. Wide mouth - don’t need a funnel to fill them and you can store pipe tobacco in them as well. If I had it to do over again I would buy those wide mouth packer jars.

T

@basement_shaman Thank you for the links. The only problem is that they will ship to Israel (or Europe) only when I’ll buy for at least 1000$ I don’t really think that I need so many jars But this web sitedoes give me a good idea of what I’m looking for *- The website @Mouse gave will not ship to Israel (or Europe) as well… For people that do live in the USA, Canada, Mexico etc I think these are good websites to check

C

@Tashi Neals Yard Remedies is opening a store in Israel soon - http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/store-finder Unfortunately it just says “coming soon” so no exact date. They will sell a variety of dark bottles and jars as per http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/make-your-own?&page=1&q=make-your-own If you can find some aromatherapy suppliers in Israel they should have stocks of dark coloured jars at a reasonable price.

B

Guys, in the U.S. most Walmarts or discount stores will have canning jars by the case with lids included. You can get quart, pint, and half pint without a problem. A case of jars shouldn’t be anymore than 10-15$. Walmart will at least have quart and pint and if they don’t you can get online to purchase them from Walmart’s website and they will ship them to your local store for free. If you don’t like the two piece metal lids that come with canning jars you can purchase one piece plastic lids for a few dollars extra. As long as you keep them in a dark place there is no need for expensive amber bottles. Save your money for snuff.

C

7.99/dozen for 4 oz jars @Walmart. Hold 50g and will protect your tobacco for decades. . But if anyone wants to go buy expensive amber bottles or fancy containers with questionable seals, by all means

V

You can get jars from many places, but I like this website, they have so many different bottles and jars, and one piece lid mason jars which are my preference. http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.aspx

That’s what I have my bulk snuffs in. 4 oz, 8 oz and even some pint jars. 25 gram tins that did not make the bulk list in amber bottles. They work for essential oils so the only question on the seal is what it’s made of. Still much fresher than if they had been left in the tin. One day I may want to use them, give them away or trade them. And they will still be fresh The one advantage to the colored bottles is they provide additional protection from light. Not that I store mine in light or in the open…

B

$.42 for 2 oz,$.75 for 4oz and $.52 for 8oz, I agree you don’t need fancy colored glass to store your stash, As long as it keep it fresh. But they sure look classy, And when I am dead my child can sell those fancy jars for a small fortune with or without the contents. Don’t hate- celebrate

T

@chris and all others… Thank you for the information (: It’s long time that I try to figure out how to store my snuff. Of course, I’ll be happy for more information and tips about this subject…

M

I tried to storage my snuffs in their original tins wrapped tightly in food film…it seems that it works…

H

@mipasma: I´m trying to storage my snuffs in my nose B-)

M

So what about putting an economy bag of snuff into a jar? It must have been for a notion of convenience or just being too lazy to empty it into the jar, I’m not sure why anymore. I just wonder if the plastic would leach into the snuff…maybe I’ll just dump it loose into the jar…but still I wonder…

The smallest size baby food jars work great for 25g tins of snuff, eat the baby food (fruits are best IMO) a you have a free jar, I keep all my daily snuffs in these jars and it worked well so far. ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs

@SnuffSniffer How do you get rid of the smell of the baby food? Beautiful collection you have :)>-

@SnuffSniffer How do you get rid of the smell of the baby food? Beautiful collection you have :)>-

Well I usually get apple sauce or bananas (the two most palatable kinds IMO) and just wash them well with soap & water, haven’t had a problem with residual food scent.
