Any one know of any snuffs that carry a distinct ginger flavour? I love to glaze a gammon roast with honey and ginger and feel that it would be a great snuff flavour. I will try to flavour some toque natural with ginger this weekend and see how it turns out but if any one knows any commercially available ones please let me know. Ta!
I think there is. Can’t remember where I saw it. Just go to the various merchants’ websites and start reading descriptions. It might be a pain, but it might be faster than waiting for the answer here.
I have never come across any ginger flavored snuff, but it may be out there someplace. Your best bet would be to flavor your toque natural with ginger. I usually use toque natural when I make a custom snuff, and it works out pretty well.
I have never come across any, more than happy to be corrected but I don’t think it exists. It would be a pretty punchy snuff though - imagine a ginger toast; it would be rocket fuel.
I’m going to put a freshly cut piece of ginger in a little bottle with some Natural, never thought of that before. When I stopped smoking, I carried some fresh ginger with me to chew on. I love the taste and often use it when I make a curry. Thanks Mopey, for a fresh idea.
I wonder if a drop of ginger beer in a plain snuff could work. It would have to be ginger beer and not ginger ale though. Ale has minimal ginger flavor. There are some spicy Jamaican ones around. I’m not much of an experimenter at this time, but I’d be interested to hear if anyone makes something.
I bought some 100% pure Lavendar Essential oil this week, put a few drops on my pillow at night. It’s very relaxing. I have some locally made snuff which is very strong with LOTS of menthol. I added ONE drop of this oil to the snuff and let it sit for 24 hours…very good!! I’ve also added some nutmeg , cinnamon and ground clove to Toque Natural, my own Xmas Desert. Peppermint essence, rum essence, vanilla essence etc works very well. Be careful to add VERY little of what ever you choose. You can always add some more but you can never take it out again! The ginger I will get tomorrow and report back on Sunday.
What about dehydrating ginger then grinding and adding to the snuff? If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can put it in the oven at a very low temp (150F) and let it cook for a while. Thin slices will help it dry out.
When I have tried to flavour snuff before, I have used the ‘put some snuff in an air tight container with the thing you want to flavour it with method’ while the snuff picks up the smell, it doesnt really seem to get the ‘flavour’ - if that makes sense at all? I like the idea of adding a few drops of ginger beer to the snuff - I will give that a try.
Keep us updated Mopey. Let us know what snuff and what ginger beer you used.
If you used straight ginger, or even powder directly in the snuff, and not just the scent, I imagine that you would get the burn of your life. And it wouldn’t be a pleasant nicotine burn. Pickled ginger is nice and smelly. I think it would work very well if you laid some on a paper towel in the snuff and let it soak up the smell for a while. Matter of fact, a nice piece of very strong gingerbread would probably work well also.
@sychodelix Then it would almost have to be a flavoring oil or concentrate. Now that I think about it… ginger would give quite a zing.
I have used straight ginger powder in making a custom snuff, I didn’t use much, but still got a nice flavor without a lot of extra burn.
Doesn’t Christmas Pudding has ginger in it?
Try looking in the for a Asian ginger snuff on a interenet web search engine. One has to exist… maybe something like the metholated ginger candies you can get at Asian Food Markets. Edit: I did find this Dholakia Herbal Snuff that contains ginger in a quick search: http://mrsnuff.com/dholakia-snuff/dholakia-flip-tops/dholakia-herbal-tobacco-freeA search in the forum brought me to this topic: (Apparently snuffmiller, aka Jaap Bes, produces Musinotabak which contains galgant root which is a plant in the ginger family. Supposedly Musinotabak is reminding those who have tried it of ginger bread.)http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/4059/1/de-kralingse-molens/
The herbal dholakia is just herbs, no tobacco? Maybe flavouring a neutral snuff - like Toque Natural - would be the way ahead. Might be just as simple as adding a small amount of ginger powder for cooking to the snuff - say starting at 10/1 ratio and working up? An extreme snuff might be Dholakia White with ginger. If you don’t like it you could always sell it to NASA to help shuttle take offs.
@ snuffster Dholakia Herbal is tobacco free. Adding Ginger at a 10 part snuff and 1 part ginger powder is probably to much. If am sure if you tried it at that mixture level that your nose would run away (maybe that’s what happened to Michael Jackson’s nose). If your going to use dried ginger powder I would add only a apple seed amount per 2 grams of snuff. Test it after mixing and then 24 hours later. If you feel you need more repeat the process by adding another apple seed amount of ginger powder. Rinse and repeat until your happy. I would recommend using a food grade ginger extract and adding only a drop at a time per every 5 grams, but using the same process of testing I described before. Remember when favoring and scenting, you can always add to your snuff but you can never take away.
Thanks for that, I had no idea. Thank God I didn’t try half and half with Dholakia white. My wife would probably be informing you all of my passing! Good point about flavouring; Ive messed up many a good snuff by not being cautious enough although Ive now found the types and ratios that work for me. My latest love is white, RandR and sparrow cool in equal parts.
I would either try to do indiredct hydration with strong ginger beer, or use a q-tip soaked in ginger essential oil. The obvious absence of ginger snuff on the market may mean the snuff makers have long since abandoned the idea. Stil, a home experiment would be worth attempting. Leman seems to have had some success as above.
I agree with Xander, those are also great methods using the two products he identified. I don’t think Samuel Gawith C.C.C. has been mentioned yet, it also has ginger. I think we should get Roderik to make up a test batch of ginger snuff…
I think that might be the point we are missing; its not made so maybe it doesn’t work. When Dholakia brought out the new ranges there was every flavouring under the sun but ginger.
Now you are just giving up. Do you need some inspiration?inspirational link
My interest is only academic as I just made my first ever batch of snuff from raw tobacco.
